Uhm, can't remember them but in any case i talked about off-car software...
AFCA
Ferrari had great difficulties mating the ECU MES software with the Magneti Marelli software with which they interprete and visualise the data.
ATM_Andy
Some teams use ATLAS, some use their own system, and some use both ATLAS and their own system. The teams are always looking for different/quicker ways of analyzing data, anything to give any edge.

TBH Renault had the biggest problems adapting to the SECU. Now as the season is coming to an end the ECU implementation seems to have been quite successful across the field.

Another one. smile.gif

Telemetry data, as far as i know, is not only sent to engineers in garage but also to team's HQ. What engineers back at factory actually do with these data? Read somewhere they do apart from other things, some tests on seven-post rig to optimize set-up...

Did they actually DNF because of it like Ferrari did ?
ATM_Andy
Yes, also they look at data gained from all the other 18 cars to estimate relative performance, and come up with an optimum strategy for qualifying, and the race.
AFCA
All the teams have access to ECU data from their rivals ?
ATM_Andy
No, but they very carefully analyze timing data etc.

Hi Andy.

Why do all the team run the same hardware on their steering wheels, the rev lights, gear selected, timing info?

Thanks
Obi
ATM_Andy
The display interfaces with the ECU, some teams have it built into the wheel others behind it, depending on driver preference.

Central Numeric Display
A single digit, fitted centrally, indicating gear number.

Left and Right Alphanumeric Display
Two smaller 4 character displays flanking the central digit. These are alphanumeric ‘starburst’ red LED displays with a right hand decimal point. They can display different parameters dependent on mode, usually lap time or fuel consumption is selected.

Marshalling LEDs
Two high intensity red, yellow and blue LEDs positioned at the extreme left and right of the unit.

Shift LEDs
A horizontal bar of 15 high intensity LEDs at the top edge of the assembly. The 5 left hand LEDs (1-5) are green, the 5 middle LEDs (6-10) are red, and the 5 right hand LEDs (11-15) are blue.

The display weighs around 100g.

Andy, thank you. Can you explain what do the red, blue and green shift lights indicate please?
fnz
don't they indicate the revs, so drivers can see when to shift?
pgj
I am sure that you are right, I just cannot think why they have a three stage signal for it. I can see that on a dial it would be green, amber and red, I cannot see why the sequence is green, red and blue.

ATM_Andy
The shift lights work at around 100rpm intervals.

Thank you Andy up.gif

I really appreciate the information but it would be nice if it could be put into context... what does it mean for BMW to be the only one to race with V39, there must be a reason? I guess this is useful to some people but I'd like to hear more about it, 'cause those figures are how the 'brain' is not spec, even if it"s insignificant it would be nice to know.

just wanted to know about the status of SECU, I mean next year it will the last of a 3 year tender awarded to MES. Does anyone have news regarding if there'll be tenders again for SECU (Magneti Marelli)?.

or is it just that that the teams will continue with the current SECU.

Any info?
ATM_Andy
It's up to the FIA, personally I don't see any reason to change. The MES ECU has been very successful and it'll be far cheaper to keep on with it.

The Software Versions is now up to V66

up.gif Thanks Andy for the Info. I too sort of share a similar opinion in that now all the teams know the SECU (a part from new teams coming in), so there's little reason to change it.

Sorry, I didn't bother to re-read the whole thread - but with all the demands to "improve the show", I was wondering why the cars have so much traction.

I mean: when did we last see tyre smoke at the start of a race? All of the cars get away perfectly all of the time, so I don't think it has anything to do with driver skill, honestly.

Maybe it would be a first step for the FIA to work a bit on the SECU software, disallowing more than 1 engine map per race, or whatever is necesarry to make traction a thing depending on the relation of the laws of physics and the driver's right foot only again...

no new tenders for the SECU? Looks like we are set in for McLaren SECU for 2011 ~ 2012?

Don't see why we need a new one? Nothing wrong with the McLaren one.
