It reminds me of the Jaguar engined Mini which Rod Embley used in the early/mid '60s. 4 Cylinders of a 2.4ltr Jaguar engine IIRC, after 2 had been cut off. That one came after the nearly 1400cc car , with a special Downton engine I think.

BTW Is he the Rod Embley who used to advertise in Autosport, possibly still does, as a race photographer, based somewhere round Banbury/Milton Keynes?

Hello all.

I'm new to TNF. Great forum, and an especially fantastic thread, evoking many, many childhood memories.

I do, for my 1st post, have a huge request.

I spent nearly every weekend of my childhood throughout the 70's, watching my father - Roger Bell - compete in various Production and Group 1 Saloon championships. Campaigning an Escort Mexico in the Mexico Challenge, Mathwall Engineerings Dealer Team BMW 2002 Tii, 3.0CS and 3.0Si. Broadspeed Dolomite's with Andy Rouse, Avenger's with Bernard Unett and half a season with Stan Clarke in an Alfa, as well as the odd outing in the BMW County Championship. Appart from some old Autosports found over the years, and the odd photo I have found, I have very little to share with my children, who are now of an age to have more than a passing interest in their Grandfather exploits. Sadly, I paid little attention to collecting Memorabilia way back when.

If anyone has any other photo's of Roger Bell in action, that they can share with me in here, I would be more than grateful.

Welcome Tim, you had the same mispent childhood as most of us here rolleyes.gif I watched your father regularly in all the above mentioned cars, was he not sponsored by "The Motor" in one of the Beemers? It's great to roll back the years and look through a thread such as this, just great days! Welcome wave.gif

Hi and thanks. From memory, he carried limited Sponsorship from "The Motor" on all his cars from the ouset. I guess being the Editor helped lol.gif "Rolling back the years" in here, recognising drivers names, cars (especially some of the Special Saloons, always my favourites) and even just the names of championships has been a real eye opener. Somehow todays racing, however fast and exciting, is just missing "something"

Hi all
I am new to the forum.
Although I am living in Austria I am great fan of Graham Hill.
I am wondering if anyone has got some photos of Graham Hill showing him driving the British saloon car championship? This would be really great.
Or do you have any idea where I could find photos of Graham driving saloons?
Of course I have got a lot of photos of Graham from F1-racing.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Regards
Alfred

Yes he did, but it was destroyed in an accident at Silverstone. I was marshaling at the time and he almost knocked me off the bank as he rolled along the top of the wall. It landed the right way up, but the steering wheel was poking through where the windscreen had been!

A very qiuick and noisy car!

Nice to have you with us, Tim. Afraid I can't help with any pictures but I remember your father very well from the pages of Motor, and later in other magazines. I always liked his writing, and I hope he is in good fettle these days.

Hello Ian

Thanks for your kind words. Dad's happily enjoying his retirement, living on the south coast at Selsey.

Alan

Thanks for the Photo. Dad only raced the Aramis sponsored BMW once from memory, an ill fated weekend that saw both the Aramis and the Rothmans cars involved in seperate incidents at different tracks - Oulton Park was one, but the other illudes me. I'm pretty certain it was also the weekend that both cars were driven to the meetings to run in new engines. I dont recall Dad using an open face helmet, but again I could be wrong.

Graham, terrific as always! Any more Snetterton shots, my local track?
If you have, perhaps put them in this 'Snetterton Memories' thread?

Great picture, the "Shellsport" Mexicos though were the 1st incarnation of the "BTCC" bump and grind racing, anyone remember the race at Brands when there was a pile up of gigantic proportions and Henry's finest were scattered all along Bottom Straight? I cannot remember the event, it could even have been this one confused.gif

Morning Andrew, thankyou, have got a couple more of cars (lots of the two wheeled thingys!!wink.gif) at snetterton.
I remember when first coming on the forum seeing the photos of Snetterton now,(last couple of years) they appear to have gone from the forum? I think you did them? They were great but so sad to frown.gif
Snetterton was my first ever race meeting back in 1971 (bike) and driving up from the south and to be right along side the track as they went by us in morning practice on the old Norwich straight, wow it seemed like we had stopped!! and we were doing 50-60mph!!
Perhaps this should have gone in Snetterton memories!!?
drunk.gif
PS I saw a picture in a Bike race paper last week of what they have done to Coram over the winter anyone else seen it in car mags/papers.
Andrew Kitson
Yep, even more run-off added at Coram. The spectators must be 100ft back there now at least.
Even more problems with a couple of locals complaining about noise too, so much so that anything louder that F3 are unable to get down to the required level imposed by the council because of just two people who complain! Very difficult for the bigger classes to test anymore at Snett, which once was the ideal venue for everything even F1. It's getting very silly and worrying too.

Sam van Lingen prepared the car I suppose, Deen raced in the Dutch national championship. Interesting point is that the sponsor (NMB Bank) became part of the ING Group later - they seem to sponsor some F1 team nowadays...

Someone mentioned about Geoff Woods Ford Escort "Super Saloon", I was testing a Clubmans car for a friend at Silverstone in 1975 and Geoff came up and asked me if I'd like a go in his Escort. We were using the GP Circuit, and I'd never driven a saloon car before. He said that if I was quicker than him I could drive it at the British GP meeting that year.

The first thing that struck me was the incredible noise inside the car, it literally hurt my ears, and we didn't use ear plugs then! The engine, a 2 litre Ford BDA, was right inside the car with me, actually if you look at the photo where the wiper arms come out is where the front pulley sits.

The next thing, I couldn’t believe how "nervous" the car felt on the track, very twitchy indeed! Anyhow, I did a few laps and came in, I think I lapped at about 108 mph and it was quite a bit quicker than Geoff had gone, so I got the drive!

Come Grand Prix practice and it was raining, he then informed me he didn't have any wets! I had to go out towards the end of practice in the pouring rain on slicks, and do 3 laps to qualify. That put me at the back of the grid. The next day if I remember all hell let loose for the GP with F1 cars flying off in all directions when there was a sudden downpour. When it was our turn to go out I was told by the pit marshal that the track was now dry and we had 3 laps warm up, as the conditions were different to practice. I set off like a scorched cat, just to get in some practice.............

Unfortunately, the track wasn't all dry, as I rounded Becketts onto the long straight down to Stowe the track was streaming wet! I completely lost it, went round a couple of times and ended up backwards into the bank on the left of the circuit, fortunately at quite low speed, I don't think the damage was too bad, but enough to put me out of the race.

As I stood on the bank waiting, Dave Brodie's car ground to a halt, also on the warm up lap, maybe his second, and he was out too. We didn't know each other then, although we each knew about on another. Dave said .........."You aren't driving that are you?"............"Well, I was before this happened" said I. ................"You wouldn't get me in that thing for a thousand pounds"

And that was it, we never spoke again until out of the blue in 1980 he phoned me up one day.........." How do you fancy racing a Clubmans car in Trinidad, all expenses paid, we'll be there for two weeks" .................Well that's another story.

When I got back to the paddock, somewhat embarrassed, I had to tell Geoff where the car was, but I couldn't stay as I had to go by car to Ingliston where I was racing the following day. My mate drove and me and Creighton Brown kept him awake by nagging all the time. We got to Edinburgh at 11.00pm only to find that the hotel had let our rooms, despite being told how late we would be.........................but again, that's another story

My only other experience in saloons was the BMW County Championship in 1980, with Tiff Needell as my team mate.

Hope you enjoyed the story,

Cheers

Nice story, Geoff - and the car does look pretty evil. When are you going to put all of your memories in a book???
Fris the Whizz
This is a very poor photo, taken by me, evidence my thumb, when I worked at Broadspeed, I think it must be about 1977. Keith Fell is on the left, he did all the painting, then Ralph, a wonderful man to work for, and then Andy Rouse, complete with mop of hair!............and of course "The Big Cat"

Cheers,

Mallory Dan
Great story as ever Geoff. The Wood Escort was quite revolutionary for the time IIRC, due to its 'lowline' profile. I only saw it once, guess where, a couple of weeks after you shunted it. It went OK, but was well beaten by Tony S's big Capri.
Andrew Kitson
Hi Graham, just sent you a personal message.
grahamw
That was an interesting story about my fathers escort, i was at silverstone at the time. It was an evil handling beast mainly due to the Len Terry designed spaceframe chassis being incorrectly constructed (nothing to do with terrys design ) and twisted !.
Re Andrew Kitson, what was your fathers name/nickname ? my father cannot recall anyone called Kitson. He only went to castle combe once where he did not have a crash but won his class.
cheers, Graham
Andrew Kitson
Graham, memory must be playing tricks. Where was it where he had his roll in the Mini then, hitting the bank?
grahamw
Hi Andrew,Ive just had a chat with my father and he said that his major rolls ending in the banking were at snetterton,1966 at the end of the main straight (hair pin) which he has photos of and in 1969 in the vita 1000 after russell on entry to the start/finish.ive yet to get over to see him with the pic of your father but im sure once he sees it the old memory will come back ! cheers Graham
ps like your art work !

Sorry go back to a previous super saloon thread, but the MK3 Cortina was indeed based on the ISO MARBORO FX3/2 Ganley car raced in Bazil Argentine & South African GP's.

It even had Derek Bennett advise on the design (whilst at a party though). I worked at Chevron sometime earlier & built most of the production B8's with a guy called Dick Temest (one every 10 days approx).

The saloon was later converted to a LIBRE F5000 car & raced by myself & Dr Alistair Thompson with an ex Brian Robinson MK3 Morand chevy & Castle combe & Mallory.

Finally sold to Don Wood still with the chevy in it. Later rebuilt back to DFV by Wood.

Sorry for the late post , but hope this fills in a few gaps.

Hello all.
I've never posted here before, but stumbled upon this thread a while ago and keep coming back to it. Great stuff.
I was wondering if anyone here might be able to help me with info about some Ford Falcons.
I'm part of a little amateur team trying to recreate some 60s and 70s cars for a racing sim/game, and want the cars to be as authentic as possible.
We have plenty info to work with for the mid 60s Falcons, but the later incarnations that raced around 69/70 are a little harder to find info on.
So I'd be very keen to receive any info at all on these cars;

Dennis Leech Falcon
Howes Racing/M.Moore Falcon
Gerry Sanger Falcon

I'm assuming they were still running the 289 engine, but don't know what power they were getting from it by 69. Also, changes to the suspension design and tyre widths are things I'm not sure of.
I have some photos, but not enough technical info do do proper versions of the cars.

To give an idea of what we're doing, this is a screenshot of one of the Falcons running in the game, painted as the Dennis Leech car, but using the mid 60s tech specs and needing the front panel and rear wings modified.

I hope this post doesn't seem out of place. I just want to make sure we do these cars justice and there seem to be some folks in this thread who might have some knowledge of them.
Any info at all would be very gratefully received.

I should mention that we have the blessing of the makers of the original game (GTL), to produce our own versions of the cars as they were in the 60s and 70s, rather than how the original game presents them, in their present FIA historic spec.
But nobody is making any money out of it. We just want the cars as they really were and to add some more interesting versions of them, like the Falcons above.

Sorry to waffle on so much. smile.gif

Cheers

Would this be Gerry Marshall's first Vauxhall racing saloon? The Shaw & Kilburn Viva GT of 1969.

I remember the car well, a very pretty Vauxhall, but did GDRM also use a 1300 Brabham model? Or am I getting confused?

Several things i have to say having read most of the thread, taken me ages.

Ref Alex Clacher's Imp he did indeed do a season which had him coming south and showing a clean pair of heels to both Ray Payne & John Homewood no mean feat.

Could Martin Thomas help me and Jeff Barley out with ref to teh Ovaltine/Flame Out Camaro Z28 he ran.
Were did that Camaro come from, i mean whos was it before you had it.?

Also did you run a group 1 Camaro Z28.?

My late father worked for you at Biggleswade in the 70's and i also helped out in a minor way with the G2 car.

While searching out some Dolomite pictures from the seventies, in response to a request from dollywobbler on another thread, I came across these, and felt that this thread was the best repository for them.
First one is Tony Dron, taking Old Hall at Oulton Park in a textbook way, followed by GDRM taking the same corner but showing a different interpretation of the correct racing line...

Admittedly the cars were running to different spec - Dron taking part in the BTCC and Marshall in the Britax prodsaloon championship. Oh, for those prodsaloon races....
Alan Cox

Oulton Park 1973- Les Leston's Camaro leads a trio of Capris at Lodge Corner, and Roger Bell (BMW) at Knicker Brook (1972)

What a great corner Knicker Brook was pre-chicane.

Just a little bit OT - reminds of the late 70s when a Dolomite joined the French Saloon Car Championship, driven by René Metge. I vividly remember one race in Montlhéry: Either the body flexed so badly or somebody had made a mistake, but everytime Metge came round "Chicane Nord" before going on to the banking the rear right hand door flung open. Did not deter him by any means ...

Returned from France with some 1960s saloon cars from Tim Blackburn's archive - the first one is if Sir John Whitmore (not sure where/when, probably Brands - can anyone verify?)

RS2000
Looks like a 1966 BSCC Group 5 car. Arundel? (from helmet)
Alan Cox
Definitely Whitmore - you can see his beard in the original shot.
RS2000
A 1966 BSCC Gp 5 car (placing of numbers, quite apart from lack of bumpers etc?). Not October Brands BSCC, so wherever Whitmore took a break from the ETCC (where the Gp 2 Mann cars were now struggling under the new Appendix J that now allowed BMW and Alfa lighter panels without them needing to be on the standard car?).
sterling49
Very hard to identify, I do not recall ever seeing a works car without the bonnet forward of the number plate not sprayed in low gloss black. Hard to identify it as Brands as well, lovely shot though. up.gif
RS2000
One Team Lotus 66 car had black front strip on bonnet, other didn't. Don't know whether it was always the Clark car had the black strip but it did at Oct 66 Brands. That event was Arundel in the other car though, not Whitmore? (number plate - PHK? - at very bottom of front panel, not on bonnet)
