Good point Twinny, maybe Dan is correct, however I don't recall the actual startline being painted like that at Mallory ( I have to notice these little things in my job!)

Could be a mystery chaps! I've just been thru' my 75 Mallory progs, and can't find one where NW is numbered 85, and I attended most meets there that year. So maybe it ain't MP after all... Alan will have to reveal all. The shape of the car on pole is odd, it seems to slope down at the back, like the DFVW or similar, which I'm sure it can't be. Its not Derek Walkers Fiat is it ??

I think you're right Andrew. Millington didn't get to Mallory much as I recall, one meet he did was the notorious Bay City Rollers day, May 18. He was on front row there, with Nick W on pole and Longmans Mini in the middle of front row. Tony S was on row 2 with the Russell Camaro. However the nos. are wrong for that race.
Alan, put us out of our misery !!

Sorry, Dan, it's not often you are mistaken but it's Oulton, 8th March 1975. A Simoniz Special Saloon race, and the Radio 1 hoarding was there because there was a Radio 1 Prodsaloon round on the programme.
The man on the far side of the front row is Dave Millington in the Brook Hire Firenza.
Sorry for the catch fencing!

Here is another for Francois, of the Lanfranchi/Nicholas van der Steen BMW - I regret that I don't have a side view:

Tour of Britain 1974

Roger Clark's brother Stan/Alfa GTV

Bernard Unett's Hillman Hunter (or was it a Chrysler??)

Nigel Stovin-Bradford leans into Lodge ahead of Jeremy Walton and John Lyon

Whizzo would always bring a smile to your face!

I too thought about that yesterday following your post Sharman and dug out the old video of the BBC 'Go with Noakes' - Purley F5000 documentary from the Good Friday '75 meeting. The Armco pit lane barrier did infact start just under the footbridge on the film . The Radio 1 sign usually had 'Lombard North Central' on it in most early-mid 70s period shots.

Geoff Wood was a friend of my father. I was not aware he carried on racing into the mid-70s, always quick in the British Vita Mini in the late 60s, I remember he had a huge roll at Combe in '69.
Is that '74 in that shot Alan or could it be '73? Thinking about the colour of Hill's Capri - it was Tricentrol sponsored blue & red throughout most of '73, perhaps this was a new car for '74, as he built several Capris did he not? or...perhaps 1972?

I do not think it is the "Stuart Turner" from FMC Rally Sport days, at about that time he came to give a talk to our Motor Club, which used to meet in the Old Pavillion at Brands. He had his time well occupied by running Roger, Hannu, Timo and Marku! Interestingly he turned up in a nice V-8 engined Granada Ghia with all the right bits on it

Timmy is mentioned in Ken Tyrrells book, driving the Mini Coopers, and yes he lost his life in the Tasman series.
Tim Mayer brother of Teddy Meyer of Mclaren.
According to Wikipedia:
"Despite the death of his brother in 1964, Mayer continued to be involved in motor sport and assumed control of the McLaren team after Bruce McLaren was killed in 1970."

Hmmm.....the Mallory Park 'Fun' Day. I was one of the close to 50,000 people that was at Mallory that weekend, working for Arian Automotive, who ran a number of Mazda RX3 cars in the Radio 1 Prodsaloon Championship. It was hardly a fun day I can assure you. One of the cars I was looking after was the Cozy Powell Hitachi entry. Of the huge crowd very few were motor racing fans. Most were screaming girls there to catch a glimpse of the Tartan Terrors, the Bay City Rollers, the 70's equivalent of a 'Boy Band'. There were also other celebrities involved in the day. The thousands of girls around started off as being a delight bearing in mind I was in my late teens at the time.... The Island in the middle of the lake had been converted for the day into a stage, and the band were supposed to play, or at least appear at some stage, and the DJs were doing their thing there. All the top DJs of the day wrere there, Tony Blackburn, David Hamilton, DLT, John Peel, plus of course Noel Edmunds, who ran a 3 litre Capri in Castrol colours that year. I seem to recall that the 'Rollers' had been deposited on the island by helicopter
The Formula Ford race was running full bore when the band appeared on the island, at which point sheer hell broke out as hundreds (maybe dozens but a lot ) of tartan clad crazy schoolgirls proceeded to run across the track, MID RACE, totally oblivious of the cars racing by. Like lemmings they hurled themselves into the lake to tried to swim to the island. I havnt been to Mallory for nearly 30 years so, but im sure the island had a control tower on it. The band and others barricaded themselves in the tower as scuba divers in wet suits and flippers were flapping around, and with what seemed to be hordes of police were trying to round up these girls. Part of the entertainment was a speed boat that was used to convey the DJs to the island . One of the clearest memories I have of the proceedings was this speedboat cruising around the lake at this point, being driven by a Womble in full regalia, whilst Tony Blackburn was sat looking every bit like the Queen, waving regally to the crowds.
Racing was naturally stopped, and when control was regained all those involved on the paddock side of things began to see the funny side of it. I know there were quite a few injured in the melee, none seriously I believe. By the time we had loaded up the traffic was as bad as Silverstone on GP day at its worse, compounded by thousands of pedestrians walking in the roads. By this time I was getting very peeved trying to escape the circuit driving one of the transporters, trailer behind at barely walking pace literally bumping pedestrians out of the way to try and clear a path. The reason I was in a big hurry to escape...... I had tickets to see some real music. Led Zepellin were playing at Earls Court that night. My next challenge that night was trying to find a parking spot in Earls Court to fit 40+ft of transporter and trailer. Altogether one of the more unique and certainly most memorable days motoracing I have had.
Now if anyone has pictures of that day.....

I was there too! A most excellent concert - I was deaf for at least the next day. John Peel's account of the Mallory Fun Day in his biography (Margrave of the Marshes) is very amusing (although he got the year wrong).

I'm raising this post up because I need help from our dear members.
I am in process to make a 1/18th scale model of the Dennis Leech's 1964 Falcon which was also driven by Jacky Ickx during the Cups of Spa 1969.
I have color pictures from the outside but I'm looking for color pictures of the inside of the car, at least to know what color were the seats, was the back seat removed and so on...
I bought an 1/18th die-cast model but I have to modify the front by adding the 2 air intakes and I need to repaint the body. Fram what I see on the photos, the color was a dark metallic blue with an horizontal yellow strip on the bonnet and 2 yellow strips on both sides.
I also can manage the sponsor decals.
The only mystery to me is the inside.
Any pictures of this car or references to books about this car are more than welcome
Thank you in advance.

The 62 was an interesting car, it had I believe the LV220/240 engine based on a GM/Vauxhall block and had the usual twin cam 16valve head, IIRC this engine then went into the Jensen Healey and crossed manufacturers into the Lotus Sunbeam, it was the mainstay of Lotus road car engines for ages.

Apologies to sterling 49 and Andrew Kitson. I put my first post up and within hours was shunted off round the country with my job. Yes i worked on all aspects of the car from 1969 to 1972. I had nothing to do with the original build that was down to Bert Avard, Jeff Simpson and someone i recall as "one arm bob" [ for obvious reasons] but cannot recall his surname. I also was led to believe that it was the first Escort to compete on the track but another one had been autocrossed on the Saturday [the day before]. The original build took less than a week. A twincam shell was delivered to the workshop and the working parts of the Anglia were then fitted into the new shell. Therefore it had raced as an Anglia on Sunday and an Escort on the following Sunday. Apparently 99% of the running gear was a straight fit, and anything that was a bit out of the ordinary Rogers father Andy, [a dour scotsman] who was high up in Ford [how did you know that Andrew] would perloin it from either A.V.O. or Boreham. I have also received some photos of the Wright brothers HA Viva wich i will post shortly. Nice to be back. Regards Dave French.

I do not know how Andrew knew of the details, but I think the details came out during pre race interviews over the PA, and also published in "The Works Escorts" by Graham Robson, and the Escort development story by Jeremy Walton.
The cars were entered at different times by "East Anglian Racing Cars" and "Dagenham Motors" I believe.

Thanks Alan, that's the only picture that I have ever seen of me driving the BMW. I did 5 races, and my team mate was Tiff Needell. I only ever raced the BMW in The County Championship, and I once raced Geoff Woods Escort at Silverstone, at the 1975 GP meeting. Unfortunately it rained in practice and he didn't have any wets (I didn't know that when I agreed to race) and in the end he sent me out to do three laps on slicks in the pouring rain!
Happy Days,
Cheers,

Does anyone remember who drove this Fiat 500 special saloon in the late '70s? Without looking out the programme I'm none the wiser.
Alan, I'm positive it's Peter Day's "Mighty Mouse" 2 cylinder BDA powered Fiat. I first saw this at Brands in June 1978 while I was visiting John Homewood (of Sunbeam Imp fame) on holiday from New Zealand. An amazing little car and veeeery quick too. It made a very distinctive "budda, budda, budda" sound like a four cylinder running on two.
Cheers, Simon.

Years later, I've tried to locate that car to see if it might be for sale.
I had read an article about it in Cars & Car Conversions...
I was able to talk to several ex- owners who were able to to give me enough info to track down the next one.
I didn't find the car, but I did find out it got converted to a Mini engine at some point.
The 2 Cyl BDA was mated to a Mini gearbox as well, if I remember correctly...

Didn't Peter Day actually have his 'half-BDA' in the front of a Mini at some point? I have a recollection of it running front wheels of larger diameter than the rear (13s v.10s I'd guess) - I do rather miss the variety, and abundance, of those Special Saloon encounters, even they didn't always provide the very best, close racing.
