Sitôt dit, sitôt fait... This was taken at the same meeting as the Martin Pearson Datsun shot and, bizarrely, I almost posted it simultaneously. I stopped on the grounds that nobody would give a hoot, but completely forgot about owners of mildew-flavoured Thruxton programmes...
Meanwhile, here's one of Mike Smith from 1977. Not the sharpest thing I ever took, but you get the general idea. This wasn't virtual loss of control - he almost always approached Lodge like this (in a Capri, at least - not sure he tried the same technique in the FF2000 Sark).
And finally, also from 1977, would anybody care to identify the driver of the Alfa below? He frequently entered it for Special Saloon races at Oulton Park, but - if memory serves - he didn't often turn up.
Oh, and I still want to know if anyone has a shot of Andrew Talbot's Triumph Herald...

Great! In my mind's eye I can picture that Lada's thundering acceleration up through Allard... Presumably the chap on the left on the inside of Lodge looking the other way is Alan.

Can't be me, Marcus, as I had yet to obtain a track pass in 1977.

I can confirm the Nigel Rosserness of the Alfa in question.
I can't identify the bloke in the BL Motorsport jacket just behind, however. It also looks as though the sweets & tobacco kiosk is doing better business than Chaters, which seems odd. I bought several Motor Racing Yearbooks there for about 10p apiece - exquisite value and I consult them still.

Definitely OT - Like a lot of Oulton habitués, I still mourn the passing of the old Chaters shack - like Simon I purchased scores of books there over the years, some at knock-down prices becauses the felt roof had leaked since the previous meeting. It was about the size of a large telephone box, and if you wanted to get out, you had to wait until the other three people in the shop had finished their browsing!

It has the CSL being chased by a Vauxhall Magnum, what looks like a celebrity race in BMW 2002s, lots of Minis, Imps etc, single seaters and a mod sports race featuring a red Jaguar XK140, I think. Also shows a very cool photographer at Druids with orange ear defenders !!
Can anyone recomend a way of transfering this film to DVD etc. I will then be able to post some frames and hopefully some film.

Richard, if you google "convert cine to DVD" you'll find a host of companies offering the kind of service you need, although I can't vouch for their quality.
My father has just paid to have several reels of old family cine switched to DVD and the results are very effective (no racing cars, though, just shots of my sister and I with ice cream all over our faces). He used a small specialist company in Cheshire, but I don't have the name to hand.
There is a website that has more info:
www.cine-2-DVD.com
Hope this helps (a bit), and good luck.

If so perhaps we should have a TNF evening get together and come and visit.

Good Day everyone, I am new to this site & have fond memories of 60s/70s Saloon car racing in GB
I moved to the USA 14 years ago.
Can anybody help with info on my favorite car from those days ( photos would be nice ).
This would be the Mike Cave/ Harry Digby Austin A40 ( Farina Grey ).
It was raced mainly in the south, Brands, Crystal Palace, Goodwood, & Castle Combe & was maintained by Richard Miles ( Downton London ).
The car raced mainly at BRDC meetings, but also took part in the Spring Grove Championship.
Are the drivers still with us & what happened to the car.
Thanks in advance.

Note earlier comment in regard to frank gardners SCA camaro the reason this was white was
that sponsorship with castrol was waiting to be confirmed and Adrian chambers who ran the team and owned most of SCA would not paint the car untill press announcement.
mustang showed was owned by tony rosen who bought it from martin birrane along with his old fairlane ex holman moody car this fairlane was part exchanged with a second camaoro I had which ali hussien drove I lent fairlane to school with old blown up engine for enginering lessons I have recently being trying to get it back as only one left in the world

The car was certainly competitive in its day. Mick Cave is still very active the last I heard, navigating on Historic Rallies, IIRC. Richard Miles operated as Lorraine Engineering, I think.
The car had a very pronounced front, with a blanking panel over most of the front radiator grill, and an oblong aperture for the radiator entry .

I remember the car well, it was indecently quick! There were a few A40's then, along with Mini's and Anglia's and the very unusual Standard 10 of Richard Sandilands, who I will never forget, stuffed it into the marshalls post at Paddock and caused the race to be stopped

That was the A40 that went to Guyana in November 72 for the BOAC Speedbird series for Gordon Spice to drive? -I'm sure I've seen it described as "ex-Mike Cave"). There was a photo in the contemporary Autosport report dug out by Andrew Fellowes recently in the quest for chassis history on the Brabhams that ran in that meeting.
Richard Miles latterly ran Tipton Garage (and it's rolling road) in East Devon (now I think run by his son Stephen, who was known for driving a Morris Marina at Wiscombe Park in late 80s/early90s, prior to a roadsaloon Fiesta).

Mea Culpa. It is of course Willy Cave who still navigates in Historic Rallies. Willy, of course, navigated for Tony Brooks and Peter Dimmock, of BBC Sportsview, in a London FX3? taxi on the Monte Carlo Rally, '60 or '61

Thanks for the replys, Still looking for more info.
I note that Stephen Miles raced a A40 with the same reg as Cave car 515 HKX at Mallory Park, Oct last year.
But it was not the same car ( darker colour ) & std front grille.
I have tried to get in touch with him via Tipton Garage, but I think they have closed down.
If anyone has a way to contact him via e.mail, Please forward.
Later.

Again, Thanks for info. I have managed to find Richard & Stephen Miles they are still running Tipton Garage & are building up the Cave A40 again.
This was the car raced at Mallory Park Oct last year by Stephen.
It was also taken to Goodwood where Mike Cave ran it.
Great to see it is back.

Fantastic!
Never seen that one before, although I believe another saloon car race (and possibly an F3 race featuring one J Hunt) were also part of that series; I note, in his usual style, dear Murray completely missed the incident involving Crabtree almost spinning Thomas that allowed Marshall to catch up!
It's of special interest to me as I live about a 1/4 mile from the track, but sadly didn't move there until 1972, by which time it was in it's dying throes as the residents were complaining long and hard. (still remember listening to the cars in the garden though!)

Hi guys, I am fresh out of the box, I dont even know if this will get to the correct forum (60s/70s saloon car racing) but here we go. There are some names that used to crop up regularly at meetings at Brands,Snetterton,Silverstone etc. that have not seen mentioned until now. Dagenham Motors Anglias and Escorts driven by Roger Taylor and Alan Peer, Peter Gee in his 1500 Bushmaster Racing Anglia, the Wright brothers Alan and Brian in their 1300 HA Viva, Reg Gubbins Mini Sprint, Albert Betts Jaguar, Bill Shaws V8 Rover, Peter Baldwins Twin Cam Mini,Colin Hawkers V6 Escort, Terry Drury and Terry Croker in their respective Escorts. I started working as a mechanic for Peter Gee around 1967 and then moved to Roger Taylors team about 69. If anyone has any photos of any of the above please put them on show. Great days, wonderful people, superb racing. Regards Dave.

Welcome Dave, I remember most of the names you listed, and used to enjoy watching the East Anglian Racing Team cars, both the Anglia 105E and the then new T/C Escort and 1300 G.T., if my memory is still o.k., Roger Taylor used to drive the Twin Cam? They were metallic blue with red centre stripes and pukka Mini-Lites? Did you prep them? They were always superbly turned out and were a regular favourite of mine at Brands, one of my regrets is, that in all the time I spent spectating, I never ever took a camera......still do not, although the digital is just fine
I also look forward to some great photos..............Alan Cox will probably have them, he has a picture of almost every car that ever raced

and they are well taken ;)
