What IS the first car on the left hand side of the track? I keep thinking that it's a Renault R8, but that seems unlikely?

I suppose Twinny's picture is from the GP support race allright, but David's seems to be earlier in the season. Anyone?
Apologies for not seeing this before. I've checked my slide of Frank Gardner and fortunately it is a card framed Kodachrome with an APR 72 date stamp so it confirms it must have been the Race of Champions meeting.

Bring those days back! I miss proper special saloons.
The black Anglia in Twinny's Mallory start shot is probably Graham Goode. I painted a pic of it on his montage I did for him. Gerry 'swish' Taylor ( A regular poster at the other place..) had the white/yellow/black 'Swish' Anglia.

When I click on the Brirish GP support race link, I get taken to the Race of Champions. The Oulton Park Gold Cup link takes me to an Apple Computers page apologising that the home page [sic] can't be found! The Brands Victory Race link offers-up the entry list for that race.

Firstly, not useless in any way Twinny! More from this period the better IMO whatever the quality.
The third car could be Graham Goode's Anglia as I posted earlier. He raced it from 1971 - '74. I don't have a photo of the car as it was returned to Graham, only a photo of the painting I did for him ( Anglia at the very top)

Ian, I don't recall Clacher coming south too often, tho' given that Niven and Dryden were there, perhaps there was a Jock-invasion that day?

the orange mini in the background may be (i say may because it was such a very bright orange and pretty unusual and distinctive) also appears a couple of times in the 1968 touring cars video footage - usually at the back and must have suffered a few blows ups because theres a couple of big gaps in the turnout!
a guy i know bought it a couple of years ago, it had been stuck in the corner of a barn since the mid 70's and was still stickered up with the last race decals etc.
its a 1071 cooper s and was race prepared by john ally, and was at one point, raced and owned by gerry marshal. the owner got a stack of history and paper work with it and the car was 'as last run' unfortunatley someone had pinched most of the engine (which looked like it may have had a 8 port head fitted at some time - either way we worked out that it had been pretty highly developed - the dizzy had a novel cable mech to advance and retard the timing - presumably to help with starting!
the owner did intend to restore it as a concours road car, i told him not to be so stupid - it would be worth so much more as a racer - so he decided to restore it as a period looking mid 60's race car - unfortunatley deciding to loose the bright orange colour
unfortunatly the guy had to sell it quickly a few months ago (women

) and the car has vanished from trace.

It was a bit outside his normal limits but he did sometimes venture south. I would have liked to have seen him race at places like Brands, I reckon he would have given the locals a nasty shock. I couldn't believe how quick that car was.
...Terry Sanger's Camaro...

Blimey!

Should check the TNF more often. A thousand thankyou's for this pic Twinny.

I worked for Terry for a time and worked on the pictured car, but don't have a photo of it. Not one. Was a spanner-man at the 73 Spa 24 hours with that car - car finished in eleventh (trophies only given down to tenth place

). In the next pit was another yank car (Camaro or Mustang?) driven by a Brit who later did quite well in GPs.... James Hunt.
Wonderful memories of those days.
Thanks again.

Just been reading through this thread as the postings were before I joined, the photos look great. I remember so many of these cars and agree completely with the comment. Loved the Fiat Abarths and the way that they would lift their front wheels whilst cornering. Question, during the Brands Hatch ETC Round 1969, the winning BMW (Hahne/Quester) was I believe Supercharged, I can recall a distinct whistle as it progressed around Brands, but was this one of the 1st cars in saloons to be "blown" in this fashion? (I am excluding the Alan Mann Escort that had a heater blower attached.....) I must admit I was rooting for the Broadspeed 1300GT and the Work's Minis as David took the battle to Goliath!

Well, there were a few supercarged cars, like some British Falcons and the unlucky Alfa Romeo GTA-SA, but unless there was a Corvair with any succes in the states the BMW was the first turbo touring car.

Thanks, I thought it was supercharged

I do not remember the Alfa or Falcons, who drove them? Just beem looking at your site, such a mine of information! The results and photos show how great the cars looked.....see some of the photos are by the moderator of this site, it seems most members of TNF were in the same place quite often!Brian Muir's car reminded me of the sad day at Silverstone when he died after the race (1980?)

Sir Gawaine Baillie drove a supercharged Falcon in 1966. It didn't seem any faster than the normally aspirated Falcons so I'm not sure how effective the supercharger was. Roy Pierpoint also started the 66 BTCC season with a supercharged Falcon, but subsequently removed the supercharger.

I have seen both of these cars racing, but was not aware they were supercharged, they did not seem to go any faster, in fact the cream of the Falcons was Frank Gardner and David Hobbs(IMHO) if my memory is working ok! Having said that. I don't think the Alan Mann car was used until 1967?
Frank's car was simply an experience to behold coming out of South Bank under the Motor bridge, the cacophony of sound and the vibrations were incredible, the ground used to shake!

The other Galaxie is Sir Gawaine Baillie's. It does look like the Jaguar is Salmon's. The Zodiac is almost certainly Alan Mann's and the Mercedes John Coundley's. In the background I think is the Anglia of Anita Taylor and the Mini of Harry Ratcliffe. There is a similar photo in Autosport which shows these two in the same group as Mann.

These pictures are just so nostalgic.....a lot of the cars and drivers are those that I used to watch in the Brands 6 hour race, when I believe it was also an ETC round. That Mark III Zodiac looks great, loved the stripes on the Galaxies to, notice how they are making a comeback on the Fiesta ST's?

There was a Mini race on Silverstone GP circuit in '65 with the top F1 names taking part. Looks like it was a race to promote the Mini. A short (silent) clip of this is on the
www.britishpathe.com website. Search 'Silverstone' and go to last film on page 3. Perhaps that '63 pic is a similar Mini promotion? Was that Simca driven by the French guy that would do a whole lap on 2-wheels in various vehicles as lunchbreak entertainment? I recall him doing this at the '67 British GP meeting, can't remember if it was a Simca though.

Do you by chance have any pics of that or other Snett meetings Alan? Always love seeing old snaps of my local track in its proper 2.7 mile configuration.
Incidentally I had a visit to my studio last week from Marcus Pye as he was up here for three days as one of the judges for the McLaren/Autosport award. ( Bliss working away with the window open hearing the World Series Renault car and Mercedes DTM blasting around in the distance, as the young drivers went through their paces - I'm only 4 miles from Snett).
I showed Marcus some of the pictures on our 'track' and 'paddock' threads, he was delighted and amazed - he loved the F5000s, many taken by yourself and Twinny.

I could not understand why the Jaguar slide had "Chapman" written on it and now know why. I did not know he drove? I do believe the Mini race is a celebrity race since there is a slide with Graham Hill and Jim Clark in the batch. There is also a head shot of a woman in one of the Minis?
