Vic Elford in the number 66 Chaparral 2J Chevrolet "sucker car" during the CAN-AM race at Riverside California, November 1, 1970. This radical car had fans at the back (seen in this photo) with the underside of the car sealed to the track by moveable side and rear skirt; the idea being that the fans would literally suck the car to the ground, allowing it to corner faster. Elford won the pole by a full 2.2 seconds over Denny Hulme in a conventional McLaren M8D, but dropped out after only two laps and finished 29th. Denny Hulme in the number 5 Bruce McLaren Motor Racing McLaren M8D Chevrolet during the CAN-AM race at Riverside California, November 1, 1970. Hulme won the race and won the 1970 CAN-AM Championship, more than doubling the point total of second place points finisher Lothar Motschenbacher. This photo is part of the Raymond Golub memorial collection.

Not a good trade, in my mind. I too, was there, still working corners. As I recall, the "sucker" motor broke on the 66.
