RE: 8W - Wonderful photo of the 158 at the Glen. Does anyone know if they were painted
in Maranello or at Chinetti's shop in Manhattan?
Also, I would like to find color photos of Phil Hill's 246 at the '59 USGP. It was supposed to be in US colors remember?
Thanks, and a great forum!
Don Capps
The cars were painted in the US by the Chinetti team; I remember reading that in either the NY Times or Competition Press.

It is hard to even find a good B&W picture of the Hill Dino from 1959! I have only seen a few color pictures of the Hill car and only one was an action shot. And it was from long, long ago...

Thank you Don -
They did look good in other colors.
I remember a yellow 246 and a 156 at Belgium and the BRG 125 Vanwall Special.
Can anyone think of any other F1 Ferraris that were painted something other than red?
Don Capps
Start with the Louis Rosier 625 in blue...

As "NART" Ferraris I think they raced in '64 or '65 in a protest against The Italian Auto Club, although I am not sure if this was in F1 or not.

I remember reading in F1 Racing, didn't Ferrari's once race in the colour blue in the 50's or 60's?

I seem to vaguely recall a story about Enzo letting Mika Hawthorne race in Britain in a green Ferrari, as a tribute, on the Briton's first or second year with the Italian team. I'm not home right now, but when I get home later tonight, I'll try to dig up that story.

Paul Frere drove a yellow Lancia-Ferrari D50 at Spa in 1956. He ended up in second place.

Paul Medici,
I think I know where to find good color photos from the 50s, but I will have to check when I'll get home and there is always the problem of copyrights that we have to keep in mind.

Just to confirm, Hawthorn did race green Ferraris for the Scuderia on a few occasions. I can't name them off the top of my head, but I am certain that it was done at the Daily Express Trophy meeting at Silverstone at least once.

Don't forget Innes Ireland in the UDT Dino 156 at the Silverstone meeting in 1962; the car was originally intended for Moss and the intention was for Moss to see if he was interested in campaigning it that season...

Another yellow Dino 246 at Spa in 1958 for Olivier Gendebien - finished 6th. Drove another yellow Dino, a 156 this time, in 1961 and what 4th?

Well, the first race Mike Hawthorn got to ride a green Ferrari was the notorious Argentinian GP, where poor Farina killed a few spectators when trying to avoid hitting a kid who jumped on track. Hawthorne mentions this in his biography and in Mon Ami Mate it is also mentioned as, "Enzo Ferrari had paid Mike the compliment of having his car painted green for the race."

Here's a (black-white) picture of that occasion from that same book:

Isn't it absolutely great that a team owner would do such a thing for his driver? Can you even imagine something like that happening today? heh

Good one Bira! I had forgotten about his 500 being green for that -- his first for the Scuderia -- race. I can just imagine the reaction of Frank Williams or Ron Dennis to a suggestion like that.... smile.gif

Check out the various schemes of the March team in the mid-1970's (1975) when it being run by a certain MM...

Anyway, you get the idea....

Thank you for all your responses.
Does anyone know why Hill's 246 was painted dark blue (not even true French colors?) Was Enzo just being Enzo or maybe he still didn't really believe Chinetti that there was a market for his cars in the US?

Don: thank you for the reference to Mr. Snellman's site. OUTstanding stuff!
Best regards-
Don Capps
The US racing colors were blue & white and they used a dark rich blue since that was what Chinetti used on his cars...

Good grief - my third post, almost eleven years ago.

Does anyone remember when AtlasF1 was offering free webspace to members with over 1000 posts?
At the time I estimated that I would reach that number about the time my granddaughter
completed college. roflmao.gif

This is the first I've heard of this . Seems unlikely as Frere was a last minute addition . Besides , this photo here of Frere at Spa in '56 appears to be a red car .

I believe you are confusing Frere's race with some of Olivier Gendebien's efforts .
Tim Murray
There was a yellow Ferrari in that race, but it was driven by André Pilette. Frère’s car was definitely red.
