This is sad news...
I met Maurice at a Bugatti Meeting at the diner at the Seneve Chateaux, 30 km south of Brussel, s Belguim, in October 1991 he was a very nice person a real gentleman driver..
I remember I send him one or 2 picture taken there, and he returned a picture of him, with his trophies his home town Vergeze, South France.

I'm afraid this had been coming. He had just got so frail in recent years. He was a fine driver, often under-rated simply as he wasn't spectacular but two Monaco Grand Prix wins & a Le Mans triumph say it all, I think.
Such a shame too his final years were tinged with tragedy in the family. He will be much missed.
RIP
Again, I hate to ask, but I suppose someone should - did Maurice die at home & if not, where?

Also, particulary bad timing, for once from Maurice. He was due to be honoured at a festival (Vergeze) in less than two weeks, but I hope it continues, despite his death, as a tribute.
Also forgot to mention, that for years he had the longest amount of WC Grand Prix starts - his racing career was so long, that if they had the same amount of WC events, back then, Patrese would be aeons behind.

If Maurice is remembered as a racing driver,
he in fact was more:
Major of Vergeze, and:
Winemaker ..
If one around here,
has one of his bottles:
Now is the time to open it,
and drink it to his Honour!!
sure he would have liked it!!
And:
As Bugattiste all around the world say
Vive la marque...
and to honour an old champion:
Vive Cher Maurice!!

Very sad news indeed.

It took me about half an hour to dig out these two photos, but one is way too 'cool' (for lack of better word) and other too beautiful not to be posted on such sad occassion.

I met Maurice several times and the two things I'll remember about him are his extreme kindness and his extraordinary memory about his races, people and facts. Adieu Maurice.
Don't forget he was official driver in Gordini, Ferrari, Porsche, Aston-Martin, Maserati, Simca, Bugatti,
Vanwall, BRM, Ford works teams.

A sad day. I had the good fortune to see him run several times in the early sixties, both in F1 and at LeMans.
He was a true gentleman.

Rolt & Pietsch are the two who immediately spring to mind. It depends what you mean by raced as depending on your criteria, it's either in single figures or roughly 20-30 ish.

Rest In Peace, Maurice. The only non-Mercedes World Championship winner in 1955 (apart from Indy), classified 2nd
and 3rd in Argentina 1955 (neat

) and the second man to win a Championship GP in a Cooper - Monaco 1958. Thanks for the entertainment.

I am very saddened by this turn of events even though it is inevitable.RIP Maurice, you've etched your place in history.

Adrian Schagen , invited to a party at Jim Madden's place, asked if he could bring his two houseguests along . No names were mentioned . It was only later when Jim Madden found himself in conversation with the quieter of the two that he realized he was talking to Maurice Trintignant( the other was Paul Frere).
Vale Maurice
Very sad news. Trintignant was one of my favourite characters in motor racing. I read so many stories about him in France's "Passion Auto". A couple of years ago I had in plan to meet him semehow. This is sad indeed.

A quite sad news, it was one of the last pilots who ran before war with the era of the Titans and then after war. It knew and ran against Caracciola, Lang, Wimille, Fangio, Farina, Hawthorn, Moss, Brabham, Clark, Surtees, etc... Two victories of which only not Mercedes in 1955 at the great price of Monaco over Ferrari 555 Super Squalo and still in Monaco in 1958 on Cooper-Climax of the TEAM Rob Walker and then of course his victory at the 24 Hours of Mans 1954 with José Froilan Gonzales over Ferrari 375 Plus. I had happiness to meet it by twice, in Rétromobile in 1993 and the following year. Useless to say that I delighted and was also marked by his kindness; it had a very good memory and everyone drank its words in a conversation where it re-memorized its exploits in races but also the anecdoctes out-races.
Good-bye Maurice... not forgiveness good-bye Pétoulet

Very sad indeed.
One of the last times when I saw Maurice, it was at ''La Ronde du Mont Ventoux'' in 2001. Sat in AC Cobra, Maurice and Jean-Claude Andruet signed autographs on caps for fans.

Ciao Maurice!
Pils1989,
Sadly, a great pic is totally ruined by the "Dreaded" watermark!!!
Can all who use them just go away??? If you don't want to share your toys with everyone, then don't show us them!!!
Pils1989
Feb 16 2005, 18:32
Keir, yes I could post it without the watermark... but I left that serie of pictures back in Belgium when I've moved here 6 months ago and It means I would need to scan them again as i don't have le Photoshop file anymore with the "Copyright" layer.
Pils1989,
Thanks for understanding!! Those bloody "Dreaded" watermarks just put me in a foul mood!!

Further to the "pre-War Grand Prix drivers still with us" query: Baron de Graffenreid.
Who is also (I think) the only surviving winner of a pre-World Championship (the 1950 version) Grand Prix, having triumphed at Silverstone in October 1949, and, with Tony Rolt and Eugene Martin, one of only three survivors of the first Championship race the following May 13th.
With Maurice Trintignant's passing, there are only four Championship race winners (including the Indy 500 winners, I think) from the first decade of the series, the fifties; Gonzalez, Moss, Brooks and Brabham. The next are Jim Rathmann (Indy 1960) and Phil Hill (Italian GP 1960), then TNF's very own Daniel Sexton Gurney (France 1962).
