Full Version: Paul Hughes or Peter Hughes?

In my everlasting search through motorsport history, tonight I stumbled across Peter & Paul Hughes, thanks to Stefan O.
My records for any Hughes are as follows:
1962 12h Nürburgring: Hughes, Morris Mini Cooper, partnered by Peter Sherman
1966 Snetterton: Peter Hughes, Frami Ford Mustang, partnered by Frans Lubin
1966 Nürburgring: Paul Hughes, Aley Mini Cooper, partnered by George Cayley
1968 Snetterton: P. Hughes, Autodelta Alfa Romeo GTA, partnered by Rhoddy Harvey Bailey

A Google search showed a Peter Hughes from Kenya, Cortina rally driver. Perhaps that's the reason for the mixup.

My guess is that the 4 "Hughes" above are all Paul Hughes from GB, just like the entire menagerie of Kemal Ataturk were all called Abdul (see "Kemal Ataturk, the man, by E.W. Swanton, page 91).
Is my guess correct (not about the menagerie, but about Hughes).

Hughes Garage were (are?) the Ford main agents in Kenya. Peter Hughes (full initials P J C) was the son of the founder. He raced and rallied in Kenya in Fords - Zephyrs, Anglias and Cortinas. He also raced a Ford-powered Lotus XX .

I don't know whether he ever raced in Europe. It is possible, sometimes people on 'home leave' managed to enter the odd race - for example John Manussis raced a C -Type Jaguar in the 1953 Dundrod TT and Vic Preston raced a Sprite in a support race to the 1961 British GP. There were others but I can't remember them.

Hope this helps.

Frank,

Haven't got anything on the events you mentioned, but at Snetterton 500kms in 1967, and NSU TTS to be driven by John Wales / harry Ratcliff & Paul Hughes was a "regretted non-starter", according to Autosport.

I'll stick to Paul Hughes for all entries then. Thanks guys.

I've found another Peter Hughes.
In Ecurie Ecosse Graham Gauld mentions a Peter Hughes from glasgow who purchased the Asteroid Tojeiro-JAP, that Archie Scott Brown had driven, from Brian Lister. He went on to have occasional drives for Ecurie Ecosse and helped run the team. He was killed in 1957 in a road accident while returning from Le Mans.
Clearly not your man, but possibly another source of confusion.

Not to be cofused with Peter Hughes the 1973/74 NZFF champion in a Bowin.

Peter was also a F5000 driver and owned Lotus 25 R4 that he believed to be a Lotus 33.

While with him, R4 was raced with a Daimler V8, 1600cc Ford twin cam and a Cortina engine in FFord (Formula C here at the time) form.

Am I missing an engine?

Getting very OT here, but I'm pretty sure the Hughes FF Lotus was an earlier model - 41 or 59. I can easily check later.
Surely monocoques were banned from FF, even in NZ?

Nor to be confused, I guess, with Paul Hughes who raced in Clubmans in Sydney...

Later entered into a suicide pact with the woman he left his wife for... they believed she had a fatal disease, so they went to great lengths to do it in style. Held a wake with all their friends around (I guess the ex didn't come...), prepared everything for their deaths, went on a holiday and did the deed in lovely surroundings.

And then the autopsy on her revealed her life hadn't been in danger at all!

When did Hughes race the car with its BRM engine?
Patrick Fletcher
You were right to question my post David ......... I thought he had raced it at Timaru but it was still with Yock that year.
David McKinney
I'm pretty sure Hughes bought the car complete with BRM engine, but found it damaged beyond repair, and so went for the Daimler option instead.
