This is a shot of Stan Jones specially built transporter for his Maserati 250F at Fisherman's Bend, Melbourne, 1958. It was considered pretty impressive at the time, so much so that "Australian Motor Sports" reckoned that it would have started on scratch at Bathurst several years previously.

Is that a Maser wheel leaning up against one of the trailer tyres?

Mick it does not exactly look like a Borrani to me wink.gif -or did they run the car on something else?

jpgp79 , very interesting , I never saw these Lotus transporters before. smile.gif

If you go to the LeMans 1957-65 thread there is a couple of transporters there too !

Hi there,

here are a few pics and a few questions for you all race transporters experts, which I am not at all !
In 1965, Team Lotus introduced a pair of new transporters aimed at carrying the new Lotus Ford Cortinas which were driven by such marvelous drivers as Jimmy Clark. Here is a picture of these transporters:

As far as I can see, these transporters have two different markings on the facia: "Thames" and in smaller characters "Marshall". This leads me to think they are based on a Ford Thames chassis (which one ?) bodied by Marshall of Cambridge, but I am not sure at all of all this. Altogether it sounds logical that the Cortinas were carried to races on a Ford truck. It must be noted that the second transporter (in the back of the picture) is different from the first one, as we can see that the side windows are different from the other one.
Note that the then current Formula One transporter (pictured a couple pages ahead in this thread) was a Bedford chassis curiously wearing an AEC Mercury windshield, and was not Ford based.

The Cortina transporters were used in this form at least until 1966, as this picture shows a S1 Europa (1966) before them:

I do have another (very poor) picture showing I think the same transporter in Gold Leaf colours, which means 1968 to 1970:

And to finish with this, I also have seen it in JPS colours, used for the 1972 Lotus 73 F3 as shown here:

Any further pics or information about these transporters is really welcome.

Hi Jean Pierre:
I think one of these Thames transporters ended its life in an Autostrada accident on his way to Monza´72 GP (see post 773) I am beginning to think that they are the same!!!!

An unknown LeMans contender(Aston Martin DB2, I think) plus its transporter

To my knowledge the above is Nigel H. Mann and M. Morris-Goodall Aston Martin DB2 at Le Mans 1953. Entrant N.H.Mann was a reserve entry.

Dear all,
I have a few presents for you today. I was sorting a pile of old mags I had in my home, and had the surprise to find inside one of them an article on "race transporters", with some nice photos i would like to share with you. They were published in the French magazine "Echappement" in the early 80's.

First of all, two views of the GELO Racing transporter, as used in the Interserie meeting at the Nürburgring the 1st april 1973. The car raced was a Porsche 917/10 driven by Georg Loos, the owner of the team.

jpgp79
Another Porsche transporter: we are on may, 29 1977, during the Nürburgring 1000 km, and this is the transporter from Kremer racing. They used a famous green livered and Vaillant sponsored Porsche 935 K2 driven by the late Bob Wollek.

jpgp79
Still during the 1977 Nürburgring 1000 km, this is the Autohaus Max Moritz Jägermeister transporter. The team raced a Porsche 935 for Manfred Schurti and Helmut Kelleners.

Well to my untrained eye .... (Ferrari transporters - not P4 replicas, that is ;) )....
it looks pretty damned close - save for the missing railings on the Brands 1970 photo.

Looks like she's had a fresh coat of paint, since August 2004, too. smile.gif

I´m looking for pictures of a BMW-Transporter in the 70ies (maybe with the 3.5 CSLs) and early 80ies (Junior-Team and F2?). Maybe this transporter looks like the Porsche-Mercedes (Martini etc.). Can anyone help?
Thanks a lot, Rhegra
Bjorn Kjer
The F2 team used a Mercedes Benz 322 COE boxed and later/or also a Magirus Deutz , propably a 310 or newer with sleeper cab and boxed ,both blue and white(above) with the name BMW rennabteilung. One is pictured in the book Renntransporter(most of it).

.. the more I look at those pictures I think the race is not the 1000 km (where is the silver Martini-Porsche-transporter?) than a race of the DRM (Deutsche Rennsportmeisterschaft), I think the paddock should be more crowded at the 1000 km...

I think you're right because the Samson RSR was #54 at the 1000Ks
Bjorn Kjer
wave.gif I am not quite convinced , but I believe its 1972 ,thinking the older MB on the left is the GS Tuning and the colours fits(allthough normal BMW) fits the Junior team.

That doesn't explain why a Porsche 911 RSR is on the track does it !

Tourist Trophy Garage transporter(s)

Several vehicles were used to move Mike Hawthorn's cars around in the early 50s - I'm trying to find more info on these without a lot of luck so far. I have a couple of partial shots but would love to see some complete ones! One at least has a lot of signwriting on and there is a chance it could be recreated given enough information to do this.

Here's what I have including a partial registration plate on the first but the last digit is missing - KRF 11? is a 1943 Staffordshire number:

The above vehicle looks to be different to the one below (an earlier photo) as this apparently lacks the side windows visible above:

The next one is a composite using a series of small vidcaps of the side of the van and one of the pics above in an attempt to get a better idea of what it possibly looked like. The signwriting has been changed at some point between the two though:

ANY help would be much appreciated!

KR119 was a Bedford OLB type and they used Colmans Mustard! Ha-ha! And it does look a lot like your pics, allthough the 23 below , seems shorter! The DCN Cooper book has about 10 pages of the 52 season where Mike did so well! Mail or PM me.

In post 845, I proposed a set of Ford Thames transporters used by Team Lotus from 1967 on. I ended up finding another (poor) pic, but very useful as it shows the transporter which was hidden in the other pics.
The picture below has been taken at Hockenheim, the sad day of april 1968 the great Jimmy Clark lost his life on a F2 Lotus 48. The Ford Thames transporter had Gold Leaf Team Lotus colours (white & red).

Thanks to all for the help both on and off-Forum! I now have a lot more info - missing one thing though, what colour was it after conversion?

Once the research is complete and I've finished contacting people, there will be a page devoted to it on the site.

I am still searching for info on transportation of the following F1 drivers/teams 1964:

Revson Racing (America) Could he have had a deal with Parnell ?
Maurice Trintignant
Derrington-Francis(ATS) Did they use Vics mod.horsetransporter (Bedford) ?
Ian Raby (Racing) Try the Raby thread ! Yes I know , thanks!

Thanks to all those who helped with the Tourist Trophy Garage Transporter - we've amassed enough info to create a basic page about it on the site now:

http://www.mike-hawthorn.org.uk/transporter.php

Managed to interview one Frank Swan a few days back in Farnham - he worked at the garage from 1950 - 1954 as a fitter and told us he helped build the transporter! And he knew it was painted dark green amongst a lot of other memories and photos / scrap album that we'll be using on the site.

Also many thanks to Doug for letting us use some of his GP Library images up.gif

We did however fit a Zephyr 6 engine and believe it or not, I made a mating plate for the bell housing so we could fit an Alvis Speed 25 gearbox as the Ford 3 speed kept jamming in 2 gears at once. Needless to say, Chapman never travelled in the thing. Jim Endruweit and myself did the "accomodation" modification."

quote taken from an early posting on the first page on this thread by David Beard

Perhaps the 4th photo, of the Ford Thames above, is the Ford Thames vehicle which Maurice Levy modified to crew cab when he was at Lotus.

BTW I am still trying to trace a photo of Jackie Oliver's similar, but three-axle, no crewcab, device from '64.
