...I found a book called "Renntransporter". It's content are the race transporters from the 30's to today. According to the description the book has 190 pages with a lot of pictures.

Interesting, just ordered a copy although could only order from amazon.de, it didn't come up when I searched on .co.uk or .com. My German isn't the best so hope it went thru correctly..

Before Carl Haas had a CART Team with Tractor -Trailers and big Motorhomes. This is how his Team made it to the races. This is 1968. I just used a pickup truck and open trailer for my own race car. This was big time as far as I was concerned. I have to admit in the old days Mercedes knew what it was all about. Just Fantastic those haulers they used.

The ferry in post #584 is one of the Thoresen ferries, after the merger with Townsend but before becoming part of P&O, either 'Viking 1', 2 or 3, at Southampton. They ran from there to Le Havre and Cherbourg from 1964 to 1976.

The letters REN could be for "HUILES RENAULT" which means Renault Oils (not Renault cars).

The letters DB must be "DE....." instead. I can't imagine the rest of the name, sorry.

wave.gif Thanks all! The Renntransporter is super , allthough mainly on Germans. If anyone has trouble with the German I will gladly help.
Here is my "tracking" so far of the 3 axle "Shelby/A.Mann" Cobra /Ford transporter from 64/65 :
59 :ordered by Scarab/RAI(Reventlov)
60 :used for the Scarab F1 season , when folding left at Lotus(who may have used it a couple of times)
61 :back in Italy prepared for Camoradi, but they ran out of money, not used.Residing in Italy I be-
leive a 3 axle was mounted, thus the 3 axle!
64 :Shelby Cobra campaign
65 :Alan Mann Cobras
66 :Alan Mann Fords
67: ?
68 :John Woolfe Racing dragsters
69 : David Piper
70 : David Piper
71-75 : ?
76-82 : GTC(Harvey Cluxton)left in Europe after their campaigns.
?? : JCBamford for historics, went to USA with hist., left the transporter there.
2005 : M.Shoen USA
2006 : Under restorence.
The car is a Fiat based Bartoletti 2stage open transporter.

Symmons in late 1966? Maybe 1967?

And I was just bragging this morning that I had the only colour pic of the Don Elliott Mustang on the forum!

I was wrong... I don't think it's been posted previously. I still live in the hope, of course, that someone has a pic of Malcolm Bailey's old Dodge with a similar trailer to the one on the back of that Ford. All a lot older, of course.

wave.gif Grear guys ,keep em coming!
Seeing post 651/652 I have to mention : That book is the only so far made on the subject! There is however 2 other books worth mentioning :
Goodwood in the 60s by Tony Gardiner which has a good deal of paddock pics with transporters .
And Motor Racing , reflections of a lost era by Anthony Carter also with many good paddock shots. In both books none of the pics IMO seen before.

wave.gif And while I am at it , I will help any with identification here or via mail (Copyrights?)

Hi!
I am Achim, live in Germany, build and collect model-cars, just sportscars wink.gif , mainly Le Mans and CanAm, but I sometimes divert to cars of specific teams, other races, actually whatever I like...
I also love the things arround the race-cars, Transporters, tracks, etc. and I follow this thread since some month now - I am also already in contact with Bjoern regarding the Porsche-Transporters...
HELLO BJOERN!
now that I realised there is a former Wyer-Team-Member on the thread, I had to register to post a question (or two...)
Hello Philippe,
where you already there when the Wyer-Team ran the 917's? there is a black and white in Michael Keyser's book showing the car in Gulf colours entering France... it first looked to me, as if this Mercedes is painted light-blue overall as where the other car owned by the Wyer-Team... can you confirm, or do you remember, if the Porsche car was ever painted so? or is that just the orange car with the light-blue belly-stripe?
and I have another question: they also used Ford Transit's as a service-car or delivery-van... do you propably remember or know the body-colour of those van's?
appreciate any comment on this - thks in advance! also appreciate any further picture of the Wyer-Transporters and utillity vans... can't get enough...
and by the way: this is the absolute forum for historic motorsport! great to see all the pics and the well-founded comments! keep it comming!

wave.gif Fine pic Jager not seen before (by me).
Hello Achim ,still at it.! There is a thread called"introduce yourself" , well you did it here. Some other good threads are "personal photos from the paddock" , "sponsor and supply vehicles" but on the right top of the side is a small square "search BB" use that and you will find a lot (not direckly on transporters but on drivers, cars, teams etc.). For can-am its good to find/search driver names , recently there has been some going here!
Regards and welcome to newbiesfrom me ,Bjørn.

Is it the oldest transporter here at the moment ?

A Mercedes-Benz 1928 SS type.

I think race car is a Mercedes 2 liter.
Ray Bell
Whatever it is, thanks for posting! Brilliant...

You'll have to contribute to this forum more often, Hubert.

clap.gif Post 657 This Bartoletti/Fiat RM126 was with Maserati from 53 till 57 when Scarab bought it and took it to the states ,at first repainted (Maseratis was grey) with bigger white letters on it later as shown. Today the car has been completely restored to its original Maserati colours and lettering ,made by silmabus. And resides in Italy.

airl88.com (James Garners team) has some fine transporters too on their fine website!

659 fine pic ,the semi-trailer was also hauled by a normal "hood"Ford for Shelby

Thanks everyone , Bjørn

Here are some pictures that my father took of Bob Jane's transporter in 1965. Bob had just pranged his Mustang at Catalina and his crew had parked the truck behind the Carrington Hotel in Katoomba.

This picture is from Auto Action newspaper from the Mid 90's. It shows Bob's transporter from about 1964.

Where have you been hiding these?

Do you mind if I use the Dodge one on a Chrysler forum?
Leo D
Ray and Catalina,

These 2 posts above tye in somewhat with the Bob Jane post where his Chrysler Dealership is mentioned.

Read the door on the Dodge... Bob Jane .... Brunswick....

As long as you give credit to the photographer (my dad)
Dad had a Dodge of a very similar model to Bob Janes one. I used it as my transporter during the early 80s. We got rid of the slant six and fitted a 245 truck motor. It was a good thing.

Yes, I mentioned a Ford in the Bob Jane thread. I said it came after the Dodge but as you can see in the pics it was before it. (i should have looked at the photo album before opening my mouth!) cool.gif
Ray Bell
And it's also very plain that Janey used a different Dodge for the big pantech...

It had spider wheels, for instance, like the comparison one I posted. I remember that. And a big step tank, if I'm not wrong.

Mountain Man, can I possibly also use one of your dad's truck on that Chrysler forum? I've got an idea you posted one of it here somewhere, maybe on the '225?' thread? Any with it in use as a transporter would fit here, of course.
Catalina Park
I don't think I have any of pics Dads Dodge. ambivalent.gif I will have to look through mums albums.

Bob Jane's 65 Dodge has 16" wheels, the one with the Spider wheels would be 20"

Did you notice that the spare wheel carrier got moved from the 64 trailer to the 65 truck?

When you say the big pantech Ray, the one in the background of this shot is what you're refering to? It saw quite a long service life ending up with Garry Rogers?....

Or was there another after the one pictured?

Both from Laguna Seca 1994.....

[Bwww.vanwallcars.com site? [/B]

This site is well worth visiting , IMHO, just to read the excellent History and Race Log , (click the relevant buttons) of the Vanwall team, written by TNF's very own Colonel Capps. Highly recommnded as a pocket profile. Very well done, Colonel.

Hi -
My dad used to own a service station in Shirley, Birmingham.

He used to own, among other things an ex-stirling moss Maserati 250-F, a connaught,a D-type jag.

Him and his mechanic got an ex-BEA luggage transporter and converted it to a race transporter.
It had a raised back to it - and the whole rear lifted open, as far as i can remember.

I've never seen a bus like it - they used to go all over, up to Scotland etc.

edit: i've just done some searching and apparently it was a commer commando - deck and a half- observation coach.

I've got no pics of the actual bus but some of his cars.

They used it between 1955-62-ish.
Last time i saw it i was about 10 yrs old and it was rotting away behind the workshops. frown.gif

There was a big old 55 caddy ambulance too.

Iguess the bus looked like this - but when i saw it it was a sort of French Blue:

heres some of the car pics :

Thanks
