Bjorn, I dug real deep to find this one. It was taken in 1958 at or near LeMans. I know nothing else about it?
Do you recognize it?

Not at all , does look typical french of that time , looks a bit like Panhard , but then they all looked very alike ,not like the brits. Will have to dig! Very exciting ,but the letters? Could it be a rented car for some of the french teams cars? Hope for other guesses. Will be back!
David please put on the The LM pic with the Ferrari LM no.28 EguipeNationalBelge paddock picture with other transporters!

You might wonder....I do sometimes , but its just so that I happen to a great deal on trucks and a little on buses. I had acollection of 25.000 trucks pics which I sold , but still work wirh. So my not yet quite out of order brain worked sæowly , cause I had seen that name "STAO" on a bus not long ago....went to the net and they just happened to have a site , under history showing a look alike Davids , this however in bus . Though I cant french it says something with 1960 and looking at it , looks like a rebuild , or just another but as bus, colours red and white. Look for yourself! And it would be very nice if a frenchman or another with french knowledge would write them and ask perhaps? Perhaps that way we would also know the team (?) who used it? Or perhaps none?

At Coronado 2006; not actually nostalgic transporters,
but they transported nostalgic cars, and some day
they will be nostalgic themselves, innit?

This transporter is a Verney. It was not a proper truck but a "truckishly bodied" bus. STAO and Verney were in fact sister companies, with the same shareholders, both based in the Sarthe (the Le Mans area).
STAO was (still is) exploiting regular coach lines in the West of France and, at the time the photo was taken, it also had a secondary activity of local freight deliveries, hence this special bodywork.
Until 1983, Verney was specialised in building "road" and city buses, as well as famous rail buses for narrow gauge railways. STAO was the main customer and user of Verney buses, but not the only one in France.
I do not believe that the example on the photo was used as a racing transporter. In my opinion it was just there in the context of its usual delivery role. If it happens that my statement is wrong and that it was temporarily used as a racing transporter for the 1958 24 Hours, the only plausible possibility is that it was borrowed by the Just-Emile Vernet team for transportation of the VP-Renaults (two were entered in 1958). I say that because Vernet was another Sarthe-based citizen and I think the only Sarthe-based entrant at Le Mans in 1958.

cstlhn,
Being a Frenchman myself, I have just forgotten to tell you that I was amazed to find such a photo with such a rare bird on TNF

. Typical French atmosphere of the late 50's. In spite of the absence of the smallest racing car on this photo, I enjoy it ! Really.

Presumably now TRANSPORTS VERNEY , the bus company , I think LM racer Annie Charlotte Verney is of the company .

Oct 28 2006, 20:06
Edward,
I'm not sure of the relation between the Verney company I was speaking about and Anny-Charlotte Verney, but you are possibly right. Verney, Vernay and Vernet (like Just-Emile), all three with the same pronounciation, are rather common patronyms in France.
Tarpon
Oct 28 2006, 21:49
BONJOUR,
I can confirm that (Any) Charlotte verney was the daughter of STAO owner ,She was well known in Le mans where I was born sixty years ago as "la fille qui court aux 24 heures".Verney was a big company and Stao part of the history of the town, you can imagine...Verney and Stao have been sold ,part to Heuliez ,part to Veolia ,only a company named CBM remains selling spare parts for bus.
The Bus truck was probably an old bus which was converted to take parcels from SNCF station to Stao warehouse from where they will be dispatched ,certainly not for door to door delivery. At Xmas ,when I shall be in Sarthe ,I "ll try to get the answer.Sorry for "my" english.

Oct 28 2006, 22:11
I agree with you Tarpon. The place where the shot was taken doesn't look Le Mans paddock (

), but looks like a typical French railway station parking as they were in those days. The white barriers in the background are very much of SNCF style.

Great and interesting pics Roger. I think that Bjorn Kjer is likely to enjoy them too.
Being always interested in exact team names, I'm concluding and discovering from these photos that your entries in 1976 were actually made under the full banner of Roger Springett Racing with Team PR Reilly rather than simply Team PR Really as usually seen in the programmes and statistical surveys.

The photo shows Williamson´s Lotus 73 plus transporter.
Does someone knows if it was used for the F1 team previously?

It looks as if my March transporter used the same wheelcovers as this Lotus transporter. Does any know where I might find a complete set of that style wheelcover?

that type of hubcap turn up on ebay and what not every so often.
i missed a brand new set of 20"'s that would suit my transporter - they went for 60 quid, but i was having a very skint week
the are very thin alloy and get damaged really easily
ive since spent about 20 hours polishing mine with wire wool and autosol.........

I must admit this was a thread that I didn't think would interest me much but it is half interesting.
I have two trasporter stories:-
Firstly; when Dad was racing the Astons for Geoffrey Marsh ('79-04) the Transporter they used from '79 to '98 (?) was the ex-Tyrrell trasporter from the '70s and I can tell you there was no draw for Gerry Marshall, but there were lots of draws for Mrs Tyrrell!! Marsh Plant used this transporter for many years (kept it orignal) and as far as I know it was never sold (?).
The second transporter story I have is from about '84 when dad had his garage in Tring. He bought an ex-BRM transporter (I think it was a Ford something) with two BRM F1 cars in it (I can't remember what they were). Dad paid £2,500 for the transporter and cars (and spares) and sold it a week later for £9,500, a very healthy profit!
No matter what BRMs they were I'm sure that could've been sold for a lot more!!
The Shelby transporter at Bridgehampton.
Very primative, David

philippe , you can Mail or PM me.
Here is something on some private firms driving racing cars around:
Baricchi,Modena took Ferraris (also new private racers)around for many years at least up to 67 incl.supp.veh. with Fiat , Bartoletti Fiat(earlier Ferrari) and OM.(2 stage transporters)
Servizo Renzi , from ? Had a Bartoletti Lancia with 3 axle trailer (not a semi-trailer) drove Francorchamps cars to LM in late 50s and Stanguellini FJuniors(2 stage transp.).
S.Smith & Co. (S.S & Co.) Downham Rd. Ltd. London, took care of most Ferrari transports in Britain
in the early 60s with Bedfords, normal lorrys or with box on.
S.T.A.O , la Sarthe....well we shall wait and see.!
Walon ,Paris , used a Unic 2 stage with 3 axle lowbuild trailer (not semi-trailer. Drove Fords and Cobras in 64-65.
Comments or further infos are very welcome

A bit slow maybe!! Reply to post No 14.
Refering to the PEGASO Codfish Transporter. Here are three photos of the transporter about to leave for Spain with two Lola T100 F2 cars on board. Date March 1968. Place back of the old Lola factory Slough. Drivers Alex Soler-Roig and Jorge de Bagration. Team Escuderia Nacional Cavo Soleto. (spelling may not be accurate). It was then used to take the cars from Montjuic Park to Jarama the same year and was replaced by a brand new PEGASO transporter.

i always 'preview' any post when i post a picture, just to make sure, as when i 'cut&paste' the IMG link from photobucket it sometimes misses the end off - which i guess is what happened to you!
the photo above is of the 1967 bedford VAL panorama that i bought to break for spares for my VAM transporter.
ive used the engine and a lot of the wood from the caravan conversion (all nice english oak) to redo the front half of mine - very nice, but it had no real race provonence, apart from a previous owner had used it when he raced a truck - dont know who he was though.
the rest was cut up for scrap, it was very rotten
