Hugo, it would be 1949 as I don't see a date but just results with not mention of the town. From the photo-album chronology, it is definitly end of the 40s.
If it helps:
1. Pilette (Veritas) 1'55'55 140,159 km/h
2. Laurent (Veritas) 1'56"5 139,055 km/h
3. Roosdorp (Ferrari) 1'58"8 136,363 km/h
etc

Jean Claude Rudaz used an old 1935 Saurer bus (rebuild) for his exploits. It would go 30mph!

I've made so many pictures seeing the extraordinary plateau of cars, transporters, bikes, tender cars, coaches and so, that by night the batteries of my camera were very tired, so the quality of the pictures wasn't that good as in daylight.
About the Gordini transporter, I'm pretty sure that it was the real thing, 'though I don't know.

Maybe I have another picture of the transporter, from another angle. I'll have a look to my collection of pictures of this year's Le Mans Classic (about 200 shots) and I'll post it if can be useful.

Guess what? Its Tonys!!Or is it ?Allthough b/w its different colours and the windows are altered! But close or richt ,its a Plaxton Bedford!

Sorry for trying again : In 1955 Ferrari got the Fiat 642 Bartoletti 2 stage open RTR(racing transporter). In 1957 Ferrari bought a new one same type only now a 682! Has been restored and shown on this thread. The old (small) one was sold to Maserati who painted it blue and yellow.
Maserati used it up to 1962 (Le Mans). Its whereabout after 62 is a bit of a mystery because somewhere I read that it was bought by a private team and chrashed on the Targa Florio to rot!!
This I cannot find correct as there were to my knowledge never more than 1 Fiat 642 RTR and that one was at the TT at Goodwood in 1964 . A small partpicture i b/w shows that its 2 coloured otherwise as Maserati did , could be red/white or blue/white. This car has had a thread earlier here on the TNF with no answers , and I have asked on this one earlier ,but I know sometimes someone just drops in or the "veterans" suddenly knows more...or something else ,so here I go again :Who was it?

News to me (from
The Cobra - Ferrari Wars) : a photo with what looks like
a Fiat/Bartoletti transporter loaded with Cobras and said to be painted "Viking Blue".
On the author's site, a later picture, about halfway down on this page:
Post-1965 Vintage Race Photos
What are the '64 and '65 colors; which is the darker?

A small addition to the above 642 : the white colour curves around the front wheel and
appears to go around the front to the opposite wheel. No names or logos (TT 1964)
Hello Frank , here is what I found on "your" Bartoletti : Started life as a 2 axle( for Scarab ?)
If that is so it must have been for their F1 venture in 1960 , colour Scarab metallic blue . Then a 3 dirigible axle was added behind.
64-66 used by Ford/Cobra still in the Scarab colours which to me was a little darker than the first Cobra light blue metallic. In 66 at least it said Alan Mann on the sides.
There after used or owned by different teams , among them David Piper ? , later for JCB and then fading in the USA , and now under rebuild ?
Does that make sence to you? AND OTHERS ?

Automobiles Bugatti entered their 251 in the French GP in 1956 with M.Trintignant at the wheel . The car was rather slow , and he only qualified 18th out of 20 cars . In the race he managed to pass Taruffi and Manzon and was himself passed by Villoresi ,before retiring on lap 18 of 48 with throttle pedal trouble. The car was never entered again !(Sheldon info)
And now for the question : How did they get the car to the track ? Transporter ? Trailer ? Pics ? Info ?

The Rover company had a very special transporter to take the Rover-BRM gas Turbine car to Le Mans in 1965.
It was based around a Land rover cab on a chassis which hydraulically lowered the load platform down to nearly ground level to roll the car off.
It had a fabric top half cover or Tilt. You can see it in action in MFQ vol 6 in the account of the rover gas turbine adventure

very interesting to see the photographs of the team tyrell transporter looking pristine. we had a simular transporter based on a bus chassis and aec power built i beleive by pullman and became the brabham transporter then purchased by sid taylor and converted into his paddock motorhome for the theodore team i aquired the vehicle in 1983 and used it again as a motorhome and towed a large trailer containing our f3 cars, eventually i sold it on but often wonder if it is still living and perhaps apears now and then at some historic meeting can anyone out there advise?

just surfing when i found a old photograph of my old motorhome still in Theodore livery and i beleive parked in my street.iThis must have been taken shortly after i purchased this wonderful machine from Sid Taylor and therefore prior to a respray,we used the machine to tow a large trailer with two F3 cars for the 1983/84 season plus occasion outing when we entered a Alpina sportscars...much fun....much memories. It says it is the British GP meeting 1961 at Aintree, where he drove a Cooper-Maserati for Scuderia Cento-Sud, so I suppose it is their transporter - I don't know whether the circle partly visible is part of their badge.

It is certainly not Centro Suds logo neither their normal transporter , but the year did not stand out in the text for me ,and is very important. Thank you! I guess I have to put on my bowler ,black glasses and my moustache again I guess!

Jul 20 2006, 21:57

Sorry Macca , the text says resting between races at Silverstone and that truck looks nice and new ,so I guess its much (not that much) later than 1961 ,perhaps a Ferrari transporter is un seen at the right? Still unsolved for me !

RD Motorsport wondered whether their old AEC was still about - the DVLA tax your car on-line site tells you if things are taxed or not - sadly BWP 67H hasnt been taxed in years so certainly shouldnt be active at the moment.
Can you tell me who it was built for as its a new one on me - originally a Worcestershire reg and an AEC Reliance coach chassis I assume?

Try contacting the helpful editorial staff at MS, who always read TNF.................
Perhaps they have cropped the photo sent in by Mr Baxter as it may show rest of the car on the right hand side and more of the transporter. Remember, most photos in the sixties were very small IIRC, certainly mine are. Perhaps they might put Mr Baxter in contact with you as a reader.

1. I have searched and found , I have asked and received a lot thank you , but I have so far not seen anything on JWAE Gulf Ford or Porsche and only 1 on the Mirage transporters ! I know there are a couple of books/video/DVD? on JWAE , but I cannot buy all just to look....cna anyone help with some info as to what cars and when? In the picture from 1973? , a paddock shot in b/W
from the Mirage period it is not the Mercedes(Porsche) transporter any more (of course). Any help will do.
2. The Porsche period goes with the red Mercedes Porsche transporters (Salzburg) but these changed to white or silver with Martini sponsorship , When ?
3. UOP Shadow F1 transporter ?

Slightly odd to see that the Hesketh transporter, from a team that was forever banging the "British" drum, is in fact a DAF... surely there were lots of suitable British-made (by British owned firms) base vehicles available in those days?
Didn't DAF take over Leyland Vehicles and then shrink right down in to the tiny LDV van plant ......which is I think still going ? Is it ? Somewhere in Birmingham making transit sized vans that grew out of the very old Sherpa range ?........or did they go under as well ?

I think that's right, although I have a feeling the van end of the business was hived off at a later date. LDV introduced a brand new Transit sized van last , the Maxus - it's handsome and thoroughly up to date, and has received good reviews. The Post Office has bought a large number of them but sadly I believe LDV are not in a very strong financial position at present and were briefly in administration towards the end of last year.

So, took your advice and started separate thread on this as well. Meanwhile, we've got 4 transporter-related images so far on

Just shows you do not need a £1/2 M transporter to take 2 cars to the races.
