Thanks for all the latest pictures and infos. A pleasure. I would like to recommend Mike Olivers new book Tales from the Tool Box , not too much has been written on these boys , and there are excellent picture and text news on transporters as well. A must!
Merry X-mas to you all.

My feeling is that this transporter is Trevor Taylor's own transporter, as he used it in 1959 to carry his Copper F2. ..."Taylors Ace Garages Bramley Roterham"

This is likely to be correct. My understanding is that, as was often the case with other works Lotus entries, The deal with ACBC was that the car was given to Trevor's father's garage to be built and prepared by Trev's brother Mike under the auspices of Team Lotus, being given the latest mods as and when. They would do all the work and turn up at the circuits. In a VR interview Trev comments about it, and points out that when he finally got a 5 speed box halfway through the season, JC having had it from the start, they did not receive all the bits so it did not fit.

"I' don't have news about the Asa transporter, but it really seems the same type of transporter .
Both transporters are reproduced in limited series by GILA Modelli s.a.s. , I think that they are sold out. "

Has this link to an Octane article on Mercedes-Benz transporters been posted before?
I knew about Uhlenhaut's "300SL+" but not about the 1934 ones. The article I saw somewhere claiming the prewar trucks were supercharged was clearly being a tad imaginative.

How fascinating that the 4th picture should show the trucks bringing the victorious cars home from thre 1934 Eifelrennen, an event well documented on TNF

Great pics of the trucks. However the flattop transporter is incorrect following it,s restoration .It should have the Mercedes -Benz star in the grill and the canvas cover was not white it would have been army green i guess. I have a picture of it some where i dig it out.
Bjorn Kjer
Mercedes never stated it to be an exact replica , but rather a replica of their L model. The reason for not having the star at the front is that the new car is petrol engined , and from 1935 all MB commercial vehicles had diesel and a star.As to the canvas , I would go for a grey version,IMO.

Team Lotus used several Volvo trucks in the past. It all started by a Volvo F89 (Reg. XNG60S) with trailer used as the main F1 transporter from 1978 to 1984, then as a secondary "test team" transporter from 1985 to 1987.

In 1985, it was replaced by a Volvo F12 Globetrotter tractor with a brand new trailer (reg. B801SNG). This one was used until the demise of Team Lotus in 1994.

They then acquired in 1986 or 1987 a Volvo F10 tractor which they mated to the F89 trailer. From what I know, this was a secondary tractor for the F1 team, used for the European GP. Attached is a picture of this transporter in 1987 Camel Team Lotus colours. Sorry, I cannot be affirmative as I don't have any photo showing the registration number, but this could well be the tractor you are interested in. The trailer in your first photo is not from Team Lotus though. You may send a message to Clive Chapman at Classic Team Lotus to have confirmation of this.

They also used a rigid Volvo FL6 truck from 1987 on (reg. D117HEX).

Hope this helps,

Jean-Pierre

It doesn't seem very likely - this truck was registered up in the North East [HN] whereas Lotus usually register their vehicles locally in Norwich. The owner can get the full history of it from DVLA - for a small fee [used to be about a fiver] the current 'registered keeper' can request the full owner history. DVLA don't shout about this service!!

Thanks very much Eldougo , the 1113 I know of , but not this picture, I see it may be Brasilian registrated.(?)

But look behind on the left is a smaller truck , must be a Dodge , with the ACA logo on the door , so Argentina? ........

Bon Jour Bjorn,
Further to my last post, I have found another couple of pictures of racing car transporters, that you may or may not have seen.
They were both at Angouleme (my local town) in the Charente region of France for the annual Circuit Des Remparts in September 2007.
Obviously, the Gitanes transporter needs no explanation, however, the Ecurie Ecosse transporter has been very lovingly restored from what was a wreck in early 80s, by Dick Skipworth, who also owns and races some of the EE Jaguars.
I am attaching a picture of the EE vehicle after it had been built (circa 1960), and as it today.
Graham Gauld, who also uses this site, would probably be able to give you a very accurate CV for this vehicle.
Kind Regards,
Les Dalton.

Bjorn Kjer
Thank you Les , 1. Good picture of the Ligier , 2&3. One of the old Maudslay buses modified by EE , 4. Nice picture of the restored Commer which EE got in May 1960.

Alain11, There is already a perfectly suitable and active thread on the subject of transporters to place your enquiry.

Please TW close this thread, and while you at it please close Blood Pressure also, it has strayed far from what DCN started and intended and now is just attracting trivial trivia!
Now is the time to act on this as it finally has slipped off the front page, so knock it on the head now.

And if it's off the front page maybe it's dying a natural death, as 99% of threads do

Cooper Formula One Transporter in 1962 at Monaco
Cooper got this Transporter an Austin for the start of the 1959 F1 season through 1962.That would be four full years. Perhaps also used as a reserve for F2/F3 up to 1965.

There's a colour side-on view in Doug Nye's Cooper Cars but the front is obscured by two of the team members.

Very similar to some of the pre-race scenes in the film Le Mans. If you're interested in transporters it's well worth pausing the DVD at several points through the film.

But then everyone here probably already knew that.

The book Renntransporter by Storz &Braun is available from www.motorbuch-versand.de at 10 EURO's plus postage. Text in German , but alone the picture is worth it I think. (I will help translate to English).

And while I am at it , mostly for newbies perhaps , I suggest:
BRM a mechanics tale by Dick Salmon/Veloce , great book with lots of BRM transporters , also colour and others too.

Motor Racing ,Reflections of a lost era , by Anthony Carter/Veloce , lots of great pictures on and of the track including interesting transporters.

Goodwood in the 60's by Tony Gardiner/Veloce , lots of pictures , but small, many transporters .

Mintex Man by Loveridge with Richardson/Douglas Loveridge , fab pics from the 50's also colour and transporters.

And finally , the newest great little (unfortunately) book by Michael Oliver , serving a good course with very interesting background to mechanics and many teams , lots of pics incl. some very special ones. Great value as are the others , if this is your topic!

I find out this video from "6 hours of Vallelunga 1973". The race was held on 25 March 1973:

Interesting is the beginning of the VIDEO - there you can see the Porsche BOX with Renntransporters.

Only the small Renntransporter L608D is in a SILVER livery.
The big Renntransporter is in a RED livery.

Do any of you know the colours of the Alfa Romeo transporters after WWII ? especially 1950 & 51 ?

It is the Alfa 500 type which Ferrari/Alfa got 3 of in 1936 and which were yellow.

Austin 750 Race transporter/trailer and Austin 7 Twin Cam.

I hope I'm doing this right I'm new to this forum and followed a link about a WWII Dodge transporter here and must admit this is a fascinating thread. I am a vintage car fan and must admit to not thinking much about how these cars GOT to the track much before. The only time I ever remember thinking about it is a story my Father used to tell about seeing a movie ( I suspect it was a news short...movietone or such) in which the Ferrari transporter was shown I believe leaving the factory in Marinello through the front gates and accelerating to what to a young man ( to remember it so many years later and tell the story) an impressive speed.... I believe his words were "till it was going like a bat out of H***" Has anyone seen this footage and if they have could they tell me where, after hearing about it and being reminded of it by this forum my curiosity has been killing me. I have tried the search engine and come up empty. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this thread through the years, I am working my way forward to now but skipped ahead to the present to " see how it comes out"...glad to see it's still going strong. All The Best, tom

A 1:43 scale model of the Alan Mann transporter was shown recently at the Nurnberg Toyfair by Exoto :

felixdk
This was taken at the non-championship F1 race at Silverstone in April 1968. It was just after Jimmy Clark had been killed and there was only one Lotus 49 for Graham Hill.

Sorry about the quality of the pic, but sometime during their travels, my color slides seem to have been attacked by some kind of Kodak-eating mold.

From the Trackforum Nostalgia board. I believe this is from the 1933 Indy 500. Edelweiss was a beer.
andymont
Who has better pictures of this Ferrari transporter ?
I'm searching old front pictures depicting the cab.

It is a Fiat 643N1 3 axles bodied by Rolfo owned by Scuderia Ferrari from 1966 to 1979 with license plate MO-138024.
It is actually owned by an American collectioner, who bought it in auction for quite 300.000 $. As I know, it is now in Italy waiting to be restored.
The first picture is taken in Monza 1967 paddocks, while the second is a 2007 picture taken after the auction sale, as it has been found, cutted in the back and without the car's lifter.

It could have been an Air Force type blue. I think the lorry is an Austin K2?
Bjorn Kjer
I do not see a K2 in the picture , it looks older than 1939 and with single wheels smaller and lighter as well as the bonnet looks more square , but admit to not knowing much about Austin before WWII.
