Dear Bjørn
Please find my proof that Mercedes chassis/Porsche transporters with license-plate “S-YZ 32" was sold to BMW Motorsport:
Photo_105: This is a transporter with license-plate “S-YZ 32" - when the bottom small door is open there is a distance(I made with RED) between bottom end of the door and the panel (the doors is not opened at 270 degree).
Photo_105

Photo_106: This is a transporter from 1980 Norisring paddock with BMW & Castrol colors - when the bottom small door is open there is a distance(I made with RED) between bottom end of the door and the panel (the doors is opened at 270 degree).
Photo_106

Photo_107: This is a one of white MARTINI transporters at 1978 Norisring paddock - when the bottom small door is open there is NOT distance between bottom end of the door and the panel. (the small door is not opened at 270 degree, the upper is opened at 270 degree).

If you would like please publish this my letter in the forum.

...thanks a lot for your work, Nicolay -great. If you take a closer look, you can also see a light-(Gulf?-)blue part of the back door. And if YZ 32 was the BMW (of 1973..., later given to Marko and a former Gulf, seen in "French kiss..."), there were definetely two Gulfs, see the light blue interior of S - C 9003 (http://martini.racing.photo.site.voila.fr/1976/lm76_e.htm).
Next question: had both Gulfs the same paint scheme? Or was one orange-blue-orange painted and the other blue-orange-blue like the Wyer AEZ? Why should the cost-oriented Porsche-people should paint the whole interior of C 9003 in blue, if only the smaller middle-part outside was blue? Any idea?
Thanks a lot, Christian

Gila models in Italy makes a lot of different Italian trucks, transporters and even busses and trolleycars in 1/43rd scale. I am negotiating with them to become the exclusive importer in the US for their models. Only 10 of some of their models are ever made for the whole world!

Why not? People were photographing trains in colour at that time.

Or was it coloured in by hand!

There was a programme on BBC2 yesterday evening showing colour photographs and films taken by a Frenchman (I think) in 1908.
Unfortunately I didn't see all of it so didn't get any of the tech info.

wave.gif Bruno , great picture , thanks! Fantastic to see pre-war colour pics , we are so used to b/w up to the 50s , and many do prefer it that way , but having searched a lot , I can for sure tell you that the years before and right after WWII was quite colourfull too , and thereby more"alive" than we might think!

I would love to see more , b/w or colour ,and if they for various reasons are not to be shown here , please give me a hint!

The earliest I've ever hear of color photos is 1935-36. I think all the photos before that date are hand-tinted.

I've never heard of any color films from before 1936, and would love to see any information on what may have existed, regardless of subject, before that date...

Peter, is this what you might be thinking of? the AUTOCHROME LUMIERE process patented in France in 1903 and first marketed in 1907

For examples, take a look at this site http://www.worldwaronecolorphotos.com/
The pictures are apparently of WW1 French Army origin and are in the collection of the French National Library.
rbm
from the BBC's web site:

"The Archive of the Planet was the brainchild of the millionaire French banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn. Between 1908 and 1930, he used his vast personal fortune to generate what is now generally acknowledged to be the most important collection of early colour photographs in the world. At the time Kahn embarked on this project, colour photography was still in its infancy. It was only a year before the Archive was created that the legendary French inventors Auguste and Louis Lumière had marketed the autochrome - the world's first user-friendly photographic system capable of taking true colour pictures.

Almost straight away, Kahn acquired one. It's not difficult to see why Kahn was so beguiled: the autochrome system produces images of mesmerising beauty. As an idealist and an internationalist, Kahn believed that he could use this system to promote peace and greater understanding among the world's cultures. So he spent a fortune to hire photographers and send them to more than 50 countries all over the world. Altogether, they shot more than 72,000 colour pictures (as well as about 100 hours of film footage) recording everything from religious rituals and cultural practices to momentous political events all over the world.

They took the earliest known colour pictures in countries as far apart as Vietnam and Brazil, Mongolia and Norway, Japan and Benin. As pet projects go, this was very ambitious - and vastly expensive. Yet undaunted by the cost, Kahn bankrolled this enterprise for more than 20 years.."

This thread has wandered a tad...never mind...I have a question: was the Thornycroft Antar ever used to cart race cars in front of a transporter???

Sadly there were four of these in Australia, but the scourge of the automotive industry, the metal recyclers got the other three. They certainly got their moneys worth of metal.

Bjorn Kjer
lol.gif The start of your post is very provoking compared to what I am accused of, but.............

I have not seen a picture of an Antar yet pulling "gocarts" , but I havent seen all ! smoking.gif
D-Type
If you want to picture a Thornycroft Mighty Antar think of the Dinky Toys tank transporter and later civilianised version pulling a low loader with a ship's propellor on it.

Given its size I would think it was too large for use as a transporter - it looks as if you could fit about six cars on it transversely. But given Australian ingenuity and pragmatism - they even made a racing car out of a military vehicle (the Maybach wink.gif ) - anything is possible...

Hi,

Here is BS Fabrications transporter during belgium GP F1 in 1978 at Zolder ; two cars in it : McLaren M23 and M 26 driven by american privateer Brett Lunger.

I try to have pics of SPACE Racing transporter (Beuttler in F1 1972/1973 and Lunger in F2 1972). Thanks in advance.

apologies if mentioned elsewhere, this is a curious looking motorcycle transporter, ex John Player

Just last week saw a picture of the John Player Norton transporter that's linked in the post by oldclassiccar. Thought of this thread and wondered what happened to the transporter. Here's another Discoverer motorhome used as a support vehicle by Bill Scott Racing, Inc. of McLean, Virginia. Obviously sponsored by Schmidt's Beer, but no idea what they raced. This is at the SCCA National races at the Cumberland, Maryland airport in 1971 or 1972. Being a support vehicle it technically belongs in that thread. The Discoverer was awkward looking even by motorhome standards.

I know it's a bit self indulgent as out of context but as I have mentioned it before and I only found this picture yesterday here is the late '60s early '70 Tyrrell F1 transporter, it was still intact with stickers on all the spares/tools draws, I always remember one as it was marked as Mrs Tyrell's, I wonder what she kept in her draw!!
I think it was sold at one of the Goodwood auctions 5 or so years ago.

Bjorn Kjer
Thanks for the latest interesting pictures.

May I ask you to have a look again on some earlier posts ?

Martin Birrane used a former Oliver Toms chip machine manufacturers' Bedford lorry to transport his Falcon in 69. He bought my friend's house in Bromley and we came along with "mechanics" passes in his Grey Porsche 911. We were only 13/14 boys at the time but it was quite a thrill.

Nice one this , there is some on the 1973 ISO Marlboro thread too . Sometimes I wonder how few or none at all there is to be seen of some team trtansporters , and others are easy to find. I know LNT is eager to find more of this Frank -Williams ISO Marlboro car , so dont hold back , even if its part pictures , it still has to be seen frontwise !

As a gofer with Chris I remeber many journeys in this van. Had a straight-6 Zephyr engine so went rather well even with the T192 on the back!

Was only 10 when F5000 started in this country so didn't race then altho' I was involved with Chris, Keith Holland (in M10B and Ian Ward Racing), Allan Kayes, Damien Magee and the Len Gibbs Racing Team. But I do now own with my brother, Tony, and race two F5000's. Or we would if they weren't still in the workshop being rebuilt!!!

Have never had a transporter for my use but have towed with Citroen DS21 Safari, DS23 Safari, CX Safari, BX 16v, and now my brother's Jeep V8 with an ex-McLaren display trailer.
