Terrific stuff Richard, and me a Beatles fan forgot about Magical Mystery Tour rolleyes.gif looking at the London-Turin special, do I see a GM/Bedford badge? My memory gets worse with the passing of nano seconds..... roflmao.gif and there I was thinking it was a Ford....

Great to see pictures of these coaches again, I am going to appear real "Victor Meldrew" now, but modern coaches have no character IMHO, efficient they maybe at traversing continents, but I would prefer a coach without a toilet. lol.gif

You are quite right Sterling, they had real style.
I went to school every morning on one of those 4 wheel steer Bedford Vals in the mid 60s they were the very latest thing then and quite an eye catcher with the low floor and big glass , driver sitting low down right up front compared with what had gone before.
Bjorn Kjer
wave.gif On post 630 and 960 you can see the Brabham Plaxton a la Dean . Toleman also had one of these Bedfords but with another body.

This was scanned from Motor Sport January 1951, it was taken at a Trial in Gloucester. I apologise if this infringes copyright.

Interesting vehicles for that year ! Wonder why he seems to be pulling up the skids, there is room for one more ? But mostly what type of car would it be , a COE yes but make ? Thanks Leigh !

Classic & Sportscar June 1996 Horsebox

Or at least help me find out what the articles are about , please .

Transport of Delight is about the Ecurie Ecosse transporter.

But there are no articles in the other quoted issues of C&SC which match those titles: nor can I see anything about transporters in them.

wave.gif Thanks to Vitesse for checking out ,the EE article I must have then (only no date on it) So my sorrows or worries to "missing" out something has been deleted !

Being at it , would any of you have a copy of Motor magazine June 17 , 1972 ?

Thanks to Leigh also for some more interesting pictures , also on the "Supply" thread !
Bjorn Kjer
wave.gif Good infos on Turner to find on the net, just Google : Turner Sports Car.

Tarpon post 1140. Tyrrell had in 77 Monaco , a Luton bodied transporter , but not a US Ford (C800), neither a British one (D600/800) but a Leyland Boxer ,Clydesdale or Chieftain I suggest. Could that be the one YOU refer to at Monaco ?

Here's a picture from Le Mans in 1981 with the Kremer transporter :

These were scanned from ‘Kieft Racing Cars 1949-1952’ by Peter Tutthill. It shows the Guy Vixen used by Cyril Kieft & Co. Ltd., the company made everything from door locks to kitchen utensils. This lorry was later used as the works team transporter when they built 500cc racing cars, note the portholes cut into the side. Many thanks to Peter for allowing me to copy it, anyone interested in his book should contact him on ……

Very good pictures Leigh , thanks a lot !

In the book Maserati , a racing history by Pritchard P57 or Maserati by Tabucchi P130 is a picture of 6CM in
front of the "Works Transporter" in 1936 ! The logo on the door of that transporter does not look like a Maserati logo to me !? Can it be Subalpina ? Any ideas or even better, answers ?

There is a book out called ‘Boy’s Own Stuff! Early Days at Silverstone & Snetterton‘, by Jim Loveridge who compiled The Mintex Man. Its basically the same formula; a collection of period photos from one source, this time it is R.W. Pearce, some of these shots might have appeared in the local papers at the time, that aside these b/w pictures have never been published. Some of the paddock scenes show some interesting transporters and back up vehicles, but they are only in the background. The full price is £25 but is available for £21 from……

Must correct you Leigh , it was Guy L. ! But the book could be interesting ?

Took these at Goodwood revival especially for Bjorn:

wave.gif Thank you very much Malcolm , good pictures ! Seeing the inside with nice white walls for some light I wonder if the probably raw walls, were painted white on the original back then ,or just in "dark" wooden colour ?

Skt.Petersburg Tram Co. is to release the Brabham Plaxton Bedford 3 axle "bus" transporter in 2008 ! They have a small story on : www.sptc.spb.ru/racing.htm

Recently I bought a bunch of picture copies from Simon Lewis Books . He has a large selection of pics , especially 1950 GBGP with a lot of of paddock shots showing racers , cars, people and many transporters.
I have in the meentime been able to identify most of them. Really amazed me!! And at reasonable prices !

I have lately been trying to get infos on the years 1934-1940 and 1945-1951 so dont hold back if you have something. Paddock shot with bits of transporters would be warmly welcome , or info where to see or get.
I do have a couple of books covering those days and many books have some pictures outside the tracks, but not yet having won the big prize in Lotto , I unfortunately cannot buy all books related ! (As most of you will know how that feels, I guess) Any infos welcome !

Before racing for Mercedes , Richard Seaman had his own transporter . Any idea of that one ?
Leigh Trevail
I think we all know how you feel on that one Bjorn, the 'Boy's Own Stuff' book involved three Loveridge's
Guy, Jim and Douglas, sorry for the mistake.
Bjorn Kjer
I just looked at my own MINTEX man book , didnt know of 3 "Loveridges" , thanks !

It was a Dodge truck, painted black (of course!) with Essolube and Dunlop sponsorship.

Here are some pictures from a truck I saw in the paddock, Nürburgring Old Timer GP last month.
It carried the Serenissima.

does anybody know the fate of the brabham bedford VAL transporter?

this one?
f1steveuk
When I was about 20 (1980ish) I was told about a six wheeler Bedford race car transporter at Ben Wise Coaches, The Dicker, Sussex, but how I could find out more now is beyond me! Maybe I should go and look, make sure I'm not missing out on a barn find of my own!
Jager
Found this nice pic of the Aston Martin team putting their cars in the transporter for Le Mans in 1954 :

More nice 1950's Aston pictures here as well :

Would anyone know what type of truck this was based on?
Bjorn Kjer
A Fordson (flatnosed) Luton type boxed truck. From 55 they got an AEC Regent III buschassis with Markham
Luton type body.

Post 1175 : Bought and delivered in 1963 . Build up inside to their liking and used from 1964 to 1971.
A.G. Dean had a lookalike wich I believe he left in the US. I have seen a blue /red one in the 70s on the TNF propably an F3 team , but could not id . This then could be the Brabham VAL.

bjorn

ive got some more info about the brabham val, but don thave the book nearby.

the ag dean one is currently dumped in sweden and looks very sorry for itself, its a std panorama body

the red blue one was again a std panorama body with the reg number 333 DAY

the brabham one was a bespoke body (built by plaxton and based on a panorama) and looked different from the front and rear, the most obvious thing is the 'peaked' roof at the front.

Please excuse, if I might have overlooked it in this very interesting thread - I am looking for pictures of the 1963(?) Porsche MAN transporter, as featured here Porsche transporter

A friend of mine, a very talented 1/87 model builder, would need, hopefully more detailed, infos in addition to the photo on mentioned page.

Any help would be highly appreciated - thank you !
Bjorn Kjer
Porsche got their 415 in 1957 using it for over 10 years combined with Opel Blitz vans and tractor/semitrailer(1 axle) as well as VW vans and pick ups.
Scuco Piccolo has just released their 1/87 model.
Since last year its been available as a super metal kit from High Tech Modell who also show some fine fotos of the model in 1/87.
The book Renntransporter has 3 pictures showing it !
I have on the net found a couple of pics , dont remmeber where, but think it has been seen here on the TNF too!
Ralf Pickel
Bjorn - thank you very much for this answer, it really helps. I already told my friend Thomas yesterday to get the book, unfortunately I do not (yet) have it on my shelf.
We were also thinking about some model available - it must have been the Hightech one, since he knows about the Piccolo.
Bjorn Kjer
On the Enrico Plate thread I have added what I know on their transporter from the new Toulo book plus my own id of their truck!

We spotted this one on or roads in the Netherlands,
just south of Rotterdam:

It has Dutch license plates

Not exactly a transporter and not a brilliant photograph. My mother used to drive this. It was Willment's Speed Shop which sold racing equipment. Don't know what make of truck it was, but it was LHD and large!

My mother is on the right. I remember she told me that she sold Graham Hill his first crash helmet.

Some wonderful old photographs keep turning up on this thread ! Keep it up Chaps !

Bjorn Kjer
Yeps Willy , a Studebaker , NOT a GMC!

Typical US leftover from WWII ! Thanks !
Bjorn Kjer
The above pictures is from the WILLMENT SPEED SHOP as said , wich was formed in 1953. They manufactured and sold racing parts like manifolds , headers ,cams and heads for Ford.

John Willment racing team was formed in 1963 !

Once again thanks Philippe Giron , very interesting pics !

You probably already know this photo. Not exactly a transporter, but...

Who can help me identifying the tractor pulling Jim Clark's victorious Lotus 25 in 1963

Bruce302
I was only 7 at the time, but it looks like a 'Guy' Not sure on the model name or number though.

Bruce.
Bruce302
OK, I found this advertisement in a US racing publication from back in '70.
T/G racing were selling off their old Trans Am cars and this transporter, a converted Greyhound bus.
No idea who if anyone, bought it, but in the days of open flat decks and ramp trucks in the T/A paddocks, this would have been pretty large. 70 mph would be a swift ride too.

Bruce.
Bjorn Kjer
Bruce , to my knowledge the tractor would be a Guy Warrior 1961.

The TG transporter clip is also very interesting .
Bjorn Kjer
wave.gif As I still seem to be the "only-officially-overall" transporter info/picture collector , I again want to thank every contributor on this this thread for very interesting information , and remind you that any little hint, be it tips on books ,verbal information or pictures with a bit of a transporter is valuable. If you should doubt copyrights etc. feel free to e-mail me at kjerbjoern@hotmail.com
