Still on the same subject of the unknown Team Lotus transporter, there's a photo in the Colin Chapman Museum website showing a transporter in the back of the Hornsey factory (that would be between 1952 and 1959 then).

That could be the Commer based transporter I mention in the earlier post, isnt'it ?
Any more info ?

This is Cliff Allison's Bedford transporter which was taken over/sold to Lotus and was used as the team's transporter around 1959. Obviously this is a model of it which was produced by a Russian company. I found the photo and letter from the company in Cliff's archives when writing his biography.

A Few months ago I was speaking to Ivan Cremer, during the 60’s Ivan raced a TR2 and more to the point worked at Arterial Motor Bodies of Salhouse Rd, Norwich, it was here that one of the Team Lotus racing transporters was built. Ivan recalled Trevor Taylor and Jim Clark visiting the works whilst the ash frame body was being built.
A few weeks later I was speaking to Bob Dance about the transporter and he said….....
'It was built in late 1960 on a Bedford chassis and carried the F1 cars from 61 till 67, when we used it for F2 . It was sold to Irishman Jerry Kinane, I drove it to Heathrow where I met JK, he handed me the cash & drove it away'.
Arterial Motor Bodies ceased trading and Norwich Coach Works took over the premises before moving to Burton Rd, Norwich. It was this company that built the transporters to carry the cars for the movie Grand Prix.
.
Ivan gave me a photograph of Colin Chapman standing at the back of the truck, unfortunately I cannot workout how to post it!

Did you know this one ?
Le Mans 1963. Probably just arriving. Very clean 250 Ps and two different Fiat Bartolettis :
Bjorn Kjer
Jul 6 2007, 19:55

On the left the Fiat 642 Bartoletti , on the right the 682 (a bit heavier and a tiny bit bigger)
Bigger engine , different grill ,bigger load , but still very much like the other 642 of Ferrari and Maserati.
Good picture ! Have yet to see 3 or more Ferrari transporters at one time ! It is still not officially confirmed that Ferrari had 3x642+1x682 at the same time !

it was a nice day at Le Mans ,we have to say that the real Ligier Livery was different ,the Saviem S45 was known as "Ecurie Intersport" (a picture was post by Papyv),"Automobiles Ligier","Automobiles Ligier Maserati" with the famous Ligier JS2,never as Gitanes .
after that,Matra Sold to Ligier its Formula one parts and its Transporter, former Leyland Tansporter used by Matra International with blue livery, and also former TYRELL used by Ken in Formula 2 with Tyrell green livery. This transporter is rusting at Ligier plant near Vichy.
I have long believed that this transporter was the last Cooper one,but I discovered recently watching F1 grand prix at Le Mans in1967 that the cooper was a .....GUY!

Many thanks to Richard Hinton for posting the photographs of the Normand Racing transporter I owned in the 1990’s, here is it’s potted history:-
Normands of Cumberland Ave. Park Royal, London NW10, were (and possibly still are) a large company who had a number of franchises for various makes of cars and trucks, also they were known for their commercial body works. In 1962 they built this transporter for Normand Racing which consisted of Lotus 23’s driven by Mike Beckwith (who was a Normand salesman), Tony Hegbourne and sometimes a reluctant Jim Clark. The transporter was based on a lwb Austin Lodestar chassis with a 4 litre straight six petrol engine, with Weslake heads, it was registered 228 YMH, and like the 23’s painted white with a wide dark blue stripe.
When Normand’s had finished with the truck it was then sold to Peter Sellers Racing Ltd. Although the actors obsession with fast cars is well documented his race team is almost forgotten, Peter kept the colour scheme, changing only the name. From there it went to Costin Automotive Racing Products of Little Staughton in Cambridgeshire, I believe that Paul Pycroft had been putting money into the Costin Amigo and that the truck was used to carry his BRM, by now the vehicle was getting a bit long in tooth. Both the truck and the BRM were sold to Gerry Marshall, Gerry then sold the whole lot to a farmer in North Norfolk, who this was I never found out!.
This is where I came into the story, driving home across the fens one day I spotted it standing in a field near Downham Market in Norfolk. Being snouty I went back for a look, the field was adjacent to Bexhill Tractors; a main agent for agricultural machinery. It transpired that it belonged to one of their customers who had left it there to be used as an oil store, a purpose built store was now in use so the truck had been towed out into the field, the next day a deal was struck which included having it delivered to South Norfolk, but I never did find out who the actual owner was. I then sent pictures of the vehicle to Michael Ware who was then working for Classic Cars magazine; Michael picked up on the fact it had a Normand build plate and featured it in his monthly article. His hunch was right, Gerry contacted him and that is where most of this info came from.
Peter Sellers son Michael purchased the truck from me with a view to restoring it, he pulled it down but then left it, speaking to him on the phone he told me he had sold it on, sadly Michael died last year. The new owner who lived in Hadleigh, Suffolk also had the intention of restoring it, the last I heard was that during strong winds earlier this year the body was damaged beyond repair.

I am afraid I have bad news about this transporter... Here is a picture I gathered last year on the web. Can't remember where, but it looks like a picture generated on Ebay.
I really seems it is the same transporter than the one pictured above, but now completely destroyed and uncomplete.

Is the same , it was on e-bay 23/6 -06 with a discription and 6 pictures. Is the first Normand transporter , s can be seen in Gardiners Goodwood book and Carters Reflections book (I have listed books here earlier).

I have a bit on Normand/Heghbourne/Beckwith/their Lotus 23s and perhaps a couple of lines more on the transporter

Jul 11 2007, 19:58
Yes it is the same transporter, the picture shows how Michael Sellers left the truck, he did however have all the parts. I was not aware that it had been re-sold on e-bay and I think that the wind damage happened afterwards. The transporter is shown in the background of a photo in Anthony Carters book 'Reflections' and also in Lotus Sports Racers 1953-1965 which is part of the Gold Portfolio series. Looking back I should have restored it myself but at the time I had other things on the go, the truck looked bad but it was definately possible, remember this was at least five years before the Goodwood Revival when interest in such things became more common place. Also I am aware that Little Staughton is in fact in Bedfordshire, my apologies to those who live there.

Nice shot - had almost not noticed it. It's the 1966 1000km race; #17 is the car of Bondurant / Hawkins (906-128 with injection engine, therefore entered as "prototype"); the red 906 with double white stripes is 906-102 of Charles Vögele / Jo Siffert (#18). This was entered as prototype as well as it had received a special treatment of its front bonnet which some people confused with a "Langheck" front - but it was, in fact, a local Swiss glass fiber specialist who had made it.

And the big light green "closed" pick-up in the front of the picture could well be David Piper , he drove a Dino 206 with Attwood for Maranello GB.

Thanks Pedro , not seen that picture before !In facts , not many on Parnell to find!
Alan , nice row of beautiful models , but dont get fooled : the Yellow Ferrari transporters is not older than 1936 and was build as NAG- Bussing , the red then was a modified Alfa version after the WW2 . And none of the 3 Fords : Tyrrell , Gelo or Maranello I have seen or heard of ! Tyrrell never had such a type of build up , neither Gelo wich was just boxed and an MB ,and the Maranello was a Thames ! Just to set things straight ,
untill proven otherwise.

This is based on a Bedford TK platform. I think it is this transporter which was borrowed by Team Lotus after they crashed their own when coming back from Jarama in 1972 (see post 90 in this thread). Unfortunately, Tim Parnell's transporter was later on written off in another crash when Lotus went to Monza that same year (see Michael Oliver's book on the Lotus 72).

from "A Very Special Year, the story of a World Championship" (1972 season with Lotus-JPS) :
Emmo: "Our problems started on the Wednesday before the race, when our transporter blew a tyre just outside Milan, dropped into a gully and threw one of our race mechanics right through the windshield. He was quite badly hurt and had to be rushed off to hospital, but even before the ambulance arrived, the mechanics knew that my race car was seriously damaged. The truck had turned three quarters of the way over, and there was a hole punched in the bottom of the race car."

In Elizabeth Hayward's book on Emmo, "Flying on the Ground", there was a lengthy passage on these dramas, and the efforts of the team to get the cars ready for the race.

Why be puzzled? Tim ran a P83 H16 and a P261 V8 for Mike Spence, Piers Courage, Chris Irwin in 1967 - nose band in Parnell maroon instead of Owen Racing Organisation (BRM) dayglo orange.

About the Exoto Tyrell,
that "build up" was at Monaco in 1976 with complete Blue TYRELL and ELF livery and in 1977 with Blue and white .I think it was(may be) a C800 Ford
.American Toy company ENTEX made the blue white version in 1/32 scale 30 years ago. With a small effort I"ll got the pictures.

Speaking to the editor of Vintage RoadScene about the Bedford VALs that were converted to transporters he came up with this……….
Re. posting 813 and 814... The Bedford VAL registered 772 DWW was chassis no.1087, and along with its sister 1088 (773 DWW), went to Hughes Dealers of Cleckheaton. It had a Plaxton Panorama 50-seat body (no. 632424, 1088 had 632548). It was new in April 1963 to Moseley’s Coaches of Barugh Green, Barnsley and painted in a green and cream livery. Their garage was on the side of the A635 and I passed it twice a day when on my way to my Saturday job in Barnsley. It lasted just five years with Moseley and was sold to A G Dean for conversion as a racing car transporter in March 1968. Its sister went to Ward of Lepton in April 1963, and then to Smith’s of Linthwaite in May 1974, becoming a car transporter a year later and finally scrapped in 1978
Here is a photograph of 773 DWW when it was in service with Ward’s. Many thanks to Alan Earnshaw of Trans-Pennine Publishing for parting with this information and supplying the picture.

This looks very similar to the the coach used in the "Italian Job", or at least the coachworks/body does, IIRC they used a Ford chassis with twin front steering axles. I would have seen Tony Dean's transporter often at Brands, great days, full of character and characters!
