The Bugattis remind me of a Bugatti owner in the '60s and 70s who had a Commer , Karrier IIRC, with a Bugatti radiator grill on the front, the truck painted the correct blue, to carry his T35. I seem to recall that he lived near Bath. The photo is in M Sport somewhere

PS thanks for the revised Bugatti pics links

Speaking of models, 1:43 model maker Premium Classixxs have just released this Porsche liveried Mercedes L3500. I'm wondering if this was used as a transporter for the Porsche Team, or just for carrying road cars, spare parts or other factory deliveries unrelated to racing ?

wave.gif Where did they go ? Apart from the light blue ones that could be Monopole or Gordini there are a couple on the right near the white/yellow stiped tent , standing nose to tail in their medium blue colours ? I cannot read the text on the sides?!
Hubert Baradat
The blue trucks could be Talbot's too. I can't read what the two blue/grey trucks say. They could be germans : type and size ...

I wonder how many former Team Lotus transporters are still in existance restored in private hands would be really interesting to see the pictures grouped together in chronological order...........and indeed which ones are missing from the sequence ?

Post 1068 : Talbot,Gordini and Monopole were light blues , DB (Deutsch and Bonnet were more "French Blue". Could they be Deutsch & Bonnet transporters ? Or Huiles Renault ?
Hubert : France certainly had their own range of bonneted trucks !

There is a 3 1/2 page article about the travels of the team during the 1958 season. If nobody else does it, I'll scan it for you at the weekend.

The Dodge is currently in many many pieces. The chassis has been cleaned up and de-greased, and work will hopefully begin soon on replacing sections of the framing that have disintegrated. The outer panelling was in a very bad way once it had been removed from the frame.

The engine has been dismantled, and as mentioned the cylinder head has been stitched due to a lengthy crack in the water jacket. It had been repaired 50+ years ago with a line of weld, but this was really only a temporary 'fix'. The metal stitching firm have cut out a long section of cast iron from the head, and let in a new piece. Investigation has also turned up some worrying cracks in the block, which are currently being looked at.

Not really transporters ... but shot in the Le Mans paddock during LM Story event two years ago.

Sorry, I'm not right in the subject, but I'm sorting out my photos ...

The Vanwall transporter sold well at Bonhams' Goodwood Festival of Speed auction on Friday. Bidding took it from £4,000 to a sale at over £62,000 - hammer price plus commissions, as paid by the enthusiastic purchaser.

On this thread in the Moparmarket forum...

Why, though, have you gone to the trouble of getting the head welded? At a stroke, I could supply you with ten of them, and several blocks as well!

Here's some here:

And it's not impossible to find body parts, either:

Not strictly speaking a transporter, but very interesting IMHO anyway:

Ray, are any of those blocks the 30" long engine, 331 cu in spec? I can find lots of smaller engines but not much for the bigger variants. All info on 3 ton US Dodges welcomed, thanks for the forum link wink.gif

No, I've not ever seen one of those myself...

'Tony West Oz' is the man to know if they're available in Australia, and in the US I'm sure I was sent pics of those trucks still in use by somebody on the Forward Look forum.

There's also Vintage Power Wagons in the US to contact.

Hi everybody,

I am wondering if anybody ever heard of the second transporter ever used by Team Lotus, back in 1955, and could possibly show pictures of this truck.

Team Lotus used a modified single decker Bedford OWB bus in its early years, and this one is well known and documented (see picture below).

In the late 50’s and early 60’s, Team Lotus used a rebodied Bedford SB chassis as its main transporter plus several Ford Thames vans, one being the famous “PMT” fast transporter used with a trailer (both pictures below).

But I recently read in Dennis Ortenburger’s book about Frank Costin (“Flying on four wheels”, an excellent read), that Colin Chapman commissioned in late 1954 a race car transporter based on a Commer van chassis. As said in the book: “He (Chapman) designed and built a box type body to haul the new car (Lotus Mk 9). He wanted the capacity to take two of them to Europe.”

I have been around for some time gathering docs and pics on Lotus transporters, but never found anything about this one. The only thing which could look like this Commer Lotus transporter is the photo below, probably shot during the july 1960 British GP for Formula Juniors. The transporter used for the F1 was then the Bedford SB, but we can see on the picture and odd transporter with “a box type body”, which could well be the old Commer.

Anyone can help and provide other pictures ?
