Although I have a variety of books and magazines that deal with the Tasman Championship from 1964-1975 I have not seen any entry lists that include race day numbers.

Obviously those lucky enough to have race programmes will know more but can someone enlighten me?

Did the organisers of the NZ series of races allocate numbers to be used at each of their races and did the Aussies do the same? Please don't tell me that at every race they had different numbers!! In the 70's photographic evidence suggests driver/ car combinations used the same number at each race; a sensible idea.

If this has already been dealt with please point me in the right direction.

For a certainty there was no such arrangement in the 1964 series, as a quick check of what few photographs Racing Car News published shows that McLaren had number 7 at Sandown and number 10 at Warwick Farm.

Similarly, in 1965 Clark had number 1 in some Kiwi events (maybe all?) and 9 in Australia, where the numbers don't appear to change from round to round. Hill goes from number 2 to number 1 across the Tasman.

1966? Seems there was some collusion, for in what photos I can see the numbers there is continuity... Clark 1; Attwood/Hill 2; Stewart 3; Gardner 4; Brabham 5... In 1967, however, at Wigram I see Brabham wearing 4 and Hulme 5 as they chase Attwood in 1... at Warwick Farm Brabham is 1 while Gardner goes from 7 to 8 crossing the Tasman and Clark remains number 6 throughout.

1968 and 1969 seem to follow the same pattern, but again it's hard to follow it all... I can see that Clark and Hill retain the same numbers throughout in '68, but Amon changes in 69. One of the difficulties in retaining numbering throughout would be the desire to give local drivers their regular numbers where possible. Obviously, most would miss out much of the time. Additionally, local drivers did not always contest races on opposite sides of the Tasman.

The entry lists are published on the sergent site if you want to check it out further.

Cheers Ray

The Sargent site does not really help, nor do the Shell NZ annuals, or the Tasman Black Book, Autosport, Motoring News or other mags including the Racing Car News 1972 review with a photo of your good self! Even the Vercoe bible does not have them.

The fact that none of the historians have recorded the race numbers suggests they do not have full details themselves and are not sure.

Hopefully there is a Kiwi and a wizard of Oz with enough programme information.

First the good news
I have all the Pukekohe and Levin programmes, most of the Wigram and a few Teretonga
Now the bad news
Don't know when I can find the time to compile a list - possibly at the end of this month if no-one else can beat me to it

The identification of each car is my own of course but the entry numbers, entrants and colours come direct from the program.

If this is helpful, I have two more Warwick Farm programs for 73 and 74 IIRC

Would it be easier if you FAX them to me and I post up the image off the FAX? It will save you having to transcribe them.

Or do you have a scanner?

My apologies...

As I was going through the RCNs I thought of the Sergent site and remembered the lists that are published therein... little did I realise that the numbers weren't shown!

There are photographs, however, in abundance. And it seemed to me from the original post on this thread that you sought only to know if the numbers were carried over through the whole series or not. Now it appears that you want all the numbers, or am I reading too much into this?

At least the AGP book contains the numbers for those races, which were included in the Tasman Cup series from 1964 to 1969.... or (as I check this out!) some of them are! No... one of them is!

1965 - Longford:
1. G Hill
2. Kerry Grant
3. Frank Matich
4. Jack Brabham
5. Jim Palmer
6. Bib Stillwell
7. Frank Gardner
8. Jim Clark
9. Bill Patterson*
10. Bruce McLaren
11. Phil Hill
12. Rocky Tresise
14. Lex Davison
15. Jack Hobden
16. Andy Brown
17. Glynn Scott
18. Mel McEwin
19. Geoff McClelland
20. Lyn Archer
21. Roly Levis
22. Barry Collerson
23. Bob Jane
25. Les Howard
26. John McDonald*
40. David Hallam

* A mystery to me... did Patto enter one car for himself? I'm fairly sure that McDonald ran in number 9.

Now you can begin to see what I mentioned earlier... look at number 20... that was Glynn Scott's usual number, but because a local driver has asked for that number Scotty had to change.

So it wasn't only crossing the Tasman that introduced conflicts with local entrant's numbers, but sometimes it happened from state to state.

That said, it must be noted that Lex Davison, who normally ran number 4, seemed to relinquish his number each year in favour of the internationals, usually for Brabham. Bib Stillwell, however, rarely (if ever) lost his regular number 6.

My programmes, and I had almost all of them, are long gone.

Thanks for the offer
No, I don't have a scanner (yet)
I suspect it would take less time to list numbers - the way Ray has done - than to cart 12 years' worth of programmes into work on bus and train, turn up the relevant pages, photocopy them, bring them home, and fax 35-40 pages of entries
humphries
Sorry for creating work for everyone.

Using photographic evidence can be dodgy especially with general reviews and even sometimes with individual race reports. Sometimes a driver would perform well but there would be no photograph available of that driver in that race and so a pic from an earlier event would be used! In South American race reports this happened quite regularly.

In the Black Books often we could get most numbers but needed all of them to maintain the format. When they were incomplete then non-related numbers had to be used. It was all or nothing in the Black Books because the format demanded entry list numbering including non-starters.

In Continental newspapers entry lists would be published but they would not always correspond with the race day numbers - deliberately - then the newspapers and often the specialised press would not report the race numbers! Trying to acquire programmes 30,40 or 50 years later was virtually impossible. Luckily the organising clubs produced detailed reports in their club journals but often these had been passed on to a local library and took some digging out.

Anyway I know that there are a lot of people interested in complete information for the Tasman series including myself and the researchers, past and present, are close to achieving the full information. Please persevere.

John
Ray Bell
John, you can readily see from the list I gave that your battle is uphill.

For instance, as far as I can tell, the non-starters were:

Lex Davison (deceased previous week)
Andy Brown (an optimistic entry with the Clisby V6)
Bill Patterson (retired from racing)
Geoff McClelland (if he was there he was undoubtedly too slow)
Barry Collerson (ditto - I don't think these these cars were fitted with 1.5 engines anyway... ask if you want to know why)
Les Howard (didn't want to spend the money on crossing the Bass Strait - fact)
David Hallam (no idea, never heard of him, but only 1100cc)

Now another factor enters the scene... entries made just in case. Just in case the money's there to run, just in case some starting money is offered, just in case there are dropouts in the series and the organisers start to plead. So in some cases, especially Longford and Teretonga, say, the list of DNAs would be long.

Other circuits weren't so bad... Warwick Farm and Sandown were right in the thick of the activity, everyone went there if they possibly could, Lakeside/Surfers had their attractions despite the distance from Melbourne, likewise Levin, Wigram and Pukekohe were easily reached.
Bernd
Dunno bout Wigram being so easy to reach Ray. Cook Straight is hardly a stream, Wigram fields were often substantially smaller than their North Island counterparts.

I've gone through the fields for the entire 60's period and there were always DNA's/DNS's usually a fair few of them as well.

I've got programmes from the Farm, Longford & Wigram
Ray Bell
Easier than Teretonga, I'd say...

And the ravages of three weekends of racing have come into play by the time Teretonga came up too... another factor in eliminating cars from the fields.

I've seen it said that Fred Opert thought Eyerly was the best driver he'd ever run - including Rosberg. What happened to his career?

I started the thread on Eyerly and here it is:

I was just as intrigued about Opert's comment and how Eyerly's career peetered out not long after his Tasman sojourn in 1971.

I don't know why the spacing gets all stuffed up, but you will be able to get the info you need from this.

Thanks for the breakthrough. Your information is very valuable; it just simply is not available here in Europe. If the Tasman races and all those wonderful pre-Tasman Championship races, the race reports of which sustained us through our long miserable winters, are to be fully documented it is going to have to be done by Antipodeans. Race programmes and official results are the key.

It would seem that the Tasman series when run to F5000 regs used the same car numbering but as always nothing can be taken for granted. The problem seems to be now with the race numbers of the Australians who did not compete in NZ. The authoritative tome "The Official 50 Race History of the Australian Grand Prix" contains no race numbers.

When odd photographs turn up it would be so useful for identification purposes if the race numbers were known for all major races Down Under. Luckily John Blanden's "History of the Australian Grand Prix 1928-1939" Vol 1 (Was there ever a Vol 2?) is superb and contains the lot. John Medley's Bathurst book has maintained the standard but otherwise great opportunities have been missed.

So if you Cornstalks, Gumsuckers, Banana-benders, Gropers, Tassies and whatever you call South Australians could do some digging it would be greatly appreciated. And please don't use old programmes to light the barbies!

I got this Warwick Farm 1972 entry list over the FAX. You can just about read it if the image is really large but I guessed 119K was too big for posting.

So here's a link.

If that's useful, I can post up 1973 too.

As I am a historian who finds the entrants as interesting as the drivers, a programme entry list is an intriguing document. So yes, indeed, I would like to see the 1973 Farm entry list. Where the support and money is coming from can, sometimes, tell you something about the driver, his circumstances and abilility.

No, John hasn't done any more AGP coverage... rather difficult to carry on after the 50-race book was completed. He is carrying on with some other works, however.

OK I've began the mammoth task of updating my lists. Due to my poor design and shortsightedness it's been quite difficult to add the extra column to my tables.
