Thanks for the leads and the feedback Paul. I shall contact Dick Wallen to at least make him aware of our efforts. I'm sure he must have some invaluable information and perhaps some more contacts for support.

Re: the memorial, I thought that the original configuration of the track would be most appropriate. And your thought of "capping" the top of the concrete in black somehow is pretty cool. I thought of perhaps making the whole thing black but that might be a bit 'severe' and dark in appearance. I don't want its overall effect to be that of a headstone or tomb-like in any way. But if I can figure out a way to maybe pour the first six inches in black concrete and then the rest in natural or light gray, that might look just fine. So, thanks for the suggestion on that.

I just saw this thread, Riverside brings back memories for me as I got my novice and regional license there in one day back in 1963 at a Cal Club/SCCA drivers school. I remember a girl there in one of Von Nueman's Ferraris, and another guy in Ole Yellar.
paulb
Richard,

Here is sorta what I was thinking for the face of the Memorial:

The interior would be the color of the concrete. I really like the shape of the track as the shape of the memorial.

I can change the format to whatever you like if you want to test other ideas.

Update...

My request for our project to Mr. Fritz Duda Jr. has been referred to their local representative, Mr. John Lopper at their offices in Newport Beach. I was told by Tamara that he would be contacting me soon. I find this encouraging, as I'm quite sure if they wanted to tell me to piss-off, they could have done so from Texas. Perhaps we have something in the works gentlemen.

Paul, yes that is indeed what I had in mind. The interior of the memorial would be in bronze so as to have a full area for inscriptions of facts and memoriam.
paulb
Thanks to Richard for providing a correct map of the original track.

Hmmm, Duda wound up as major shareholder when Les Richter sold out his shares (at least that's always been my understanding)...perhaps Duda also got Richter's memorabilia?

I like the idea of any monument having the track outline. The only place that exists now is the granite marker on Joe Weatherly's grave (does anyone else think it odd that his headstone is the outline of the circuit he died at?). I'd post it if I had the capabilities...errr, and if I could remember what books I've seen the picture in.

Some noteworthy items for inclusion (of course reference to the huge variety of types of racing that took place at RIR, even drag racing, off road racing and events on the oval, and the names of some of the notables that competed at RIR).

Mention of the men who came up with the concept and built RIR
Date of first and last races
US Grand Prix 1960
Introduction of IROC 1973 (I realize it's a shadow of it's former self nowadays, but was a well received and unique concept at the time)

Skip Hudson should also be mentioned along with Gurney. I realize his record isn't that noteworthy, but I can tell you first hand, that if Gurney was a God to the Riverside crowd, hometowner Hudson was at least some form of deity as well smile.gif

My brother has the Wallen book on Riverside, which lists (thanks to the compilation efforts of Phil Harms), all of the pro races, so a number could be listed for total events held at RIR. I don't believe it includes the SCCA Regional events, so those numbers will be missing (as will vintage race meets). It would be nice to have a full total of race meets (motorcycles as well).

Here is the list of fatalities I have (I haven't cross checked the dates yet to confirm, so if anyone can verify those, have at it. I will get to it myself when I have a chance!)

Pedro Von Dory Sports Car April 3, 1960
Pat Pigott Sports Car October 14, 1962
Joe Weatherly Stock Car January 19, 1964
Jim Ladd November 15, 1964
Ken Miles Sports Car August 17, 1966 - testing
Billy Foster Stock Car January 20, 1967
Vic Tandy Sports Car April 27, 1968
Mel Andrus F5000 April 24, 1971
Bill Spencer Stock Car January 18, 1975
Dave Miller September 19, 1976
Sonny Easley Stock Car January 15, 1978
Tim Williamson Stock Car January 12, 1981
Jim Harris April 3, 1983 (Solo I - is that right?)
Rolf Stommelen Sports Car April 24, 1983
John Goss Vintage October 15, 1983
Graham Clayton
Jim,
Just make sure that you double, triple and quadruple check the
list of fatalities at Riverside.

You don't want to have the disaster that happended with the
memorial plaque that was put on the site of the now defunct
Sydney Showground speedway.

When the plaque was unveiled, there were 25 names listed.
After the plaque was unveiled, it was then discovered that
there were 3 names missing from the list. The s**t hit the
fan over the omissions! There was talk of a smaller plaque
being added with the 3 missing names, but as far I am aware,
that has not happened.

Richard, with such a long list of fatalities, you might only
have room for the opening and closing meetings on the
plaque. Remember, the more stuff you have on the plaque,
the more expensive it will be!
rdrcr
Gentlemen,

I can't thank you enough for your initial efforts in compilation of names, dates and information. If I may, I'd like to formally delegate this bit to the synergy that exists here in TNF. If at all possible, our effort and inspiration will be reflected in someway in the memorial. This is a cumulative effort and should be shown along with the benefactors.

All of the important information, The starting and finishing events, the most important races and most noted drivers including those that lost their lives at the famed facility will find a place upon the memorial. Graham, regarding your mention of costs, it is a concern of mine to be sure. However, the cost at this point is uncertain, when we have the concept and all that it entails, we will then have the memorial submitted for bids. It will then cost what it costs. Additionally, I have little doubt that all of the information can be artfully inscribed in the interior of the memorial, after all it's size is estimated to be at least seven feet in length and over 4 feet wide. I estimate the cost to be at least $20,000 USD (based upon the current design configuration, artwork, materials and installation) and not including the unveiling ceremony. So perhaps an estimated 25k in total. But I intend to tap some pretty well healed characters that have a direct interest and desire to see this thing built. Plus, with a tax benefit, directly associated to a non-profit, one time charitable deduction that is racing related, many should pony up with little problem. Hell, the entire project to some, would be like pocket change.

But, first things first. To find a prominent and accessible site to place the memorial. Then to make sure all of the approvals are in place. There is a parallel timeline that is involved of course, and the concept and costs will be placed in there accordingly. The culmination of our efforts will be in the much hailed (hopefully) and promoted unveiling ceremony.

This RIR memorial will succeed. It's time has not only come, but it's long overdue and many know it. It's fruition is will be a direct product of this forum and perhaps Atlas F1. (I hope he won't mind me letting the cat out of the bag prematurely), I have gotten a preliminary blessing from Paul to have this effort be a direct reflection of Atlas F1 and TNF's caring and consideration of racing history. Paul has indicated to me that he intends to run this by Bira to make sure that this is something that they want to be associated with and that they believe that I can get the job done. Once I have the "formal" approval of Atlas management, I can then start reflecting my efforts in a more promotional manner, rather than a grass-root effort. Which, I might add will still work, should they chose not to formally associate themselves with me / us. Not being a media hound per-se, I offered this part to Paul as I thought it would reflect well upon Atlas F1, TNF and all of the really good people who continue to fill our ranks.

Thanks again.
Graham Clayton
Richard,
It seems that you are determined to get this memorial
happening! Maybe the success of your memorial
might encourage other people to do a similar thing
in their area.

Have you got in contact with the local Historical
Society? As well as having information on the
track's history, they may be able to help you
with the financial considerations, as well as
giving assistance on the day of the unveiling.

One other thing to do. Get all of your approvals
IN WRITING, to avoid any possible confusion in
the future.
Jim Thurman
One additional fatality that literally just popped into my head (yes, this many days later)...

George Koehne Sports Car injured October 1964

Koehne was, IIRC, retired USAF. He was badly burned in an accident during practice or qualifying for the Times GP that year. He, like so many others during that time, was transported to Brooke AFB Burn Unit in San Antonio, Texas (which was the best in the country in that era). He died some time later. I'll have to check for date of death. I have a racing paper that happens to mention his passing.

Graham,

To answer a couple of your questions;

Yes, I have been in contact with the Neighborhood Preservation Department of Moreno Valley. The Department Head, Mr. Slagerman, has given his verbal approval of support for the project. I will as you say, seek out and get written letters and documentations as the need arises. The approvals per-se (permitting) of actually going forth with the memorial, must be in writing so as to gain permission to erect a public monument etc.

Perhaps not too surprisingly, the City of Moreno Valley only has a brief history of the track and the great racing events that went on there. As things are now, I shall be depending upon this forum for the mainstay of information and data relating to historical events.

Jim,

Thanks for the recalling the memory of George Koehne. A perfect case in point of why I will rely upon you and others to get all of the facts and the truth about RIR to light prior to inscriptions.

Wow, this is one of my favourite tracks in the computergame "GPL" (Grand Prix Legends).

I didnt know this track didnt exist anymore, too bad, cause its a great track to race on.

It's Official. up.gif

I have been given clearance by Atlas F1 management to orchestrate the Riverside International Raceway Memorial as an official effort of Atlas F1 and The Nostalgia Forum.

We are in contact with a couple of international publications and we should prepare some sort of press release.

AndreasNystrom
As I said, i guess they are fictional, like you say.. 7year after the USGP smile.gif

I guess this is cause the game reflects the 1967 Formula 1 season and not the 1960.
Jim Thurman
Two more to add to the sad list...

John Lawrence Sports Car June 1957
Marc Verbofsky Formula Car (what type?) July 2, 1989

The real irony here is Lawrence died in the first formal day of racing and Verbofsky died on the last day of racing.

What I'd really like to do is get a total number, counting all events held at Riverside International Raceway (motorcycles included). This would include club races (of which there were many) and vintage meets as well. Just to put things into proper perspective.

The above two were from the Dick Wallen book "Riverside Raceway: Palace of Speed".

Curiously enough, no mention of Koehne. He might be the only fatality in a professional race at Riverside not mentioned in the book. The club racer fatalities (save Vic Tandy) went without mention, obviously since the book focused on pro races. When I get a chance, I'm going to cross-check the names I listed with racing papers hopefully to glean more info.

The book also listed not only Rudy Cleye and John Edgar's involvement in creating RIR, but listed the circuit designer (who doubled as general contractor), the architect who drew up the plan, the structural engineer, the landscape architect and electrical contactor!.

In addition to memorialising what our Italian friends used to describe as 'The Fallen', I hope this enduring tribute - if it happens - might also record The Happy Times - Riverside's place in the scheme of American and worldwide racing, its major races, major winners.....????

DCN
rdrcr
Yes Doug, To alleviate any concerns, only a small part of the monument will be devoted to the names and dates of "The Fallen" With approximately 10 sf of display area there should be ample room for a brief but thorough history, including how it came to be and the men who made it happen, the partners and evolution of the facility, the total number of events held, the more significant events and lap records for all the major classes, and any other important historical data.

What we need now is some wonderfully talented scribe to craft out that narrative of history to give the monument its proper prestige that hallowed piece of ground deserves. wink.gif

There is also a very nice surprise coming... provided by another gifted Atlas F1 forum member.

In related news: The city will also be studying the feasibility for a site in one of their parks located at the end of Eucalyptus St. at Day St. This is very close to the original Raceway site and offers public access, parking, lighting and maintenance for our monument - a most attractive combination.

Not to worry Doug. First, I wouldn't want to be involved with the project if it solely included the names of fatalities at the track (more later in the "speeds ultimate price" thread on my conflicted feelings on compiling this sort of info).

If it seems like I'm obsessing on that aspect, I'm not. Believe it or not, this info was all easily at hand and George Koehne I recalled (interestingly enough, my older brother was attending Riverside for the first time that practice day). I am however insistent on getting these men's names correctly spelled and correctly noted.

As poor as it sounds, the happier times are going to be much more difficult to notate in concise form. Riverside International Raceway hosted such a wide array of races, that other than the 1960 United States Grand Prix, it's hard to come up with specific race or races that were signifigant. A list of major race winners would make the monument of massive size!.

Jim Thurman
Jim Thurman
Some odds and ends here...

A correction to one of the fatalities, I have the name being Pat Piggott

Not to be a fly in the ointment, but as far as track outline, what about the Stock Car course and the short course?. A tremendous amount of the racing at RIR took place on those two layouts.

Obviously, the first person that comes to mind when seeking quotes...Dan Gurney.

Jim Thurman
rdrcr
Not to worry Jim, I have that worked out as well. The Stock Car course and the small oval that was a part of the original design layout will be etched into the bronze area along with turn numbers, start finish line, etc. Please see the original track configuration that appeared in the RIR programs.

We'll have to do the best we can on the prioritizing of what events should be in the top 25 or so. As it all lays out on the monument, we'll have to move material around and come up with an ideal presentation of all of the historical information.

Thanks for your contributions. Please contact me by PM, I'd like to run a few things by you.

UPDATE...

The Moreno Valley Director of Parks & Recreation has been brought into the loop. Mr. George Price has been made aware of our efforts and I am told that studies are being undertaken to see if Moreno Valley can incorporate the expense and maintenance. As previously mentioned, park sites; one existing and one yet to be built are being evaluated along with the potential for a site in the new Civic Center adjacent to City Hall.

So opinions... What do you think? The park sites are closer to where the actual track was (near Eucalyptus & Day St.) but are buried in a suburban setting. Only the local residence and those who will take the time to seek it out will get to view it. The Civic Center offers greater public exposure to the masses and easier access. Both are not a certainly by any means, but a probable situation does exist for them so it is worth mentioning at this point. No update from The Duda Company after an inquiry. I imagine that it might take a bit for the local rep. to get it through personally to Fritz Jr. in Dallas.

In other news.

I have spoken briefly with Justin and he told me that he had given the synopsis of the RIR Monument to his father. And, it was met with a positive response. Justin told me that his dad wondered why nothing had been done before and that he would be more than happy to help. I also spoke briefly with Kathy Weida his executive assistant and she requested that I email her a copy of the report. Which I have. In my cover letter, I was hopeful that she might be able to assist me with rounding up some additional celebrities who could attend the unveiling.

Some attempts have been made to get this into the hands of the press... As I have more response, I'll update further on this aspect.

The wheels turn...

...More news, I just got an email from the Director of Parks & Recreation, Mr. George Price. Inviting me to their Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) meeting next Thursday for the projects formal introduction to them. Sounds very preliminary to me, but from his wording, I think that it is a good indication that this project may have a good reception. He mentioned that the City Counsel would have to grant approval as well, but that is nothing new.

I have replied, thanking him for his considerations to our effort and that I would be very happy to attend.

Mr. Price is promoting the TownGate Park site as his first choice but I have suggested that something a bit more prominent might be in order, like some modest spot on the grounds of the new Civic Center...
paulb
Excellent, Richard up.gif up.gif .

I can confirm that one attempt at getting the info to the press was successful!

Thanks for all your work.

I think the Civic Center would be preferable for a number of reasons:

- better day-to-day maintenance than at a park. The city would not want it to look shabby in a location important to the city's image.
- less chance of vandalism
- city would have some history to brag about
- the current proposal presents a formal, sculpted piece of art that would add sophistication to a Civic Center
- everyday folk still go to Civic Centers
- the monument would not be forgotten since it would be in a central, high-visibility location

Let me know if I can be of any assistance.
Graham Clayton
Richard,
Keep up the good work!

BTW, I might mention that my local historical society has approved the construction of the embossed copper plaque for Windsor speedway. We even managed to get a discount off the original price.

In an amazing coincidence, the company that is doing the plaque was set up by a racer
who actually raced at Windsor! When he retired from racing in the early 1970's, he set up
the business. He will be comig along to the unveiling, along with his brother, who also raced
at Windsor.
rdrcr
Thanks,

.... congrats and best wishes to you on your continued efforts Graham! Sounds like you're alomost done - with nothing much left to do but put on the party! How ironic that you have an ex-Windsor racer who is making the plaque. He must be quite happy to participate and you get "family" rates!

I hope that the meeting goes well. I've made allowances for the size and scale of the monument so that it might be more suitable for a formal setting, as indicated this to the municipal authorities.
rdrcr
UPDATE...

Well, I attended the Parks and Recreation Advisory Meeting (PRAC) last night.

I made a short, passionate speech. I thanked the members for their allowing my presentation without a formal spot on the docket and answered all their questions. I also left them with a bound synopsis of the project for their review.

Their response was most positive. It was suggested that the monument could find a home in front of the new Recreation Center being built by a private developer on city land. It is on one of the park sites I had previously mentioned. The new facility is approximately 4,000 SF and will be used for all sorts of community activities. Which means that it's constant use will insure that the RIR monument will be seen by many and protected from vandalism. And, it will be easy to find, as the Rec Center will be a noteworthy addition to the community and highlighted on all city and regional maps.. The site is at Eucalyptus and Day streets very close the original pit area.

The developer was made aware of this project a couple of days ago. They have also responded with a positive indication that they too, would like to see this monument at their entrance.

The construction of this facility is a little over a year way. Perfect timing.

As an aside, years ago, the Fritz Duda Company gave the city some memorabilia, photos and the like. The PRAC members thought that it might be a great idea to relocate all of the memorabilia inside the Rec Center, to complete the theme. Very cool I thought.

Next month, the PRAC members will meet again. They will have the RIR monument on their docket to vote upon. Once approved, they will bring the idea before City Counsel the following month. (baring any setbacks)

Needless to say, I am quite pleased with the reception that I got. I hope that there isn't a lot of "extra study" to the idea, as it tends to impede the process.

In the interim, I'll be sure and send follow up letter to all the PRAC members and contact the developer to send them a synopsis.

See you next month.

P.S. We need to think about including the major motorcycle events as well.

UPDATE...

I just received an email from George Price, Moreno Valley PRAC Director, he has informed me that the RIR Monument was unanimously approved by the Committee members last Thursday. The next submittal is to City Council sometime in late August. Mr. Price will be contacting the city manager to schedule the meeting. I have been asked to attend to answer questions and provide information about the monument.

Mr. Price indicated that there would be probably no problem with their approval process.

With this initial approval, funding efforts have been put in motion.

I hope that the unveiling of the monument will coincide with the opening of the new TownGate Recreation Center.

I have also contacted Andrew Bornhop of R & T. I spoke with him and he thought that the RIR Monument was a great project. He said, that after we get our final approval from City Council, he would find a spot for some PR in their People, Places and Things section. (estimated to be in their Oct. issue) And an announcement after the unveiling ceremony.

In addition, there was an article in the SCCA So. CA region's magazine this month. The L.A. Times is also being courted.

That's all for now...

Excellent news, Richard up.gif up.gif up.gif

Probably in a year's time. The timetable was relayed to me by Mr. Price. The Recreation Center is being funded by a private developer that is doing a large amount of residential development in the area.

I doubt I will say anything that hasn't already been well stated by others here but some of my earliest memories of racing are watching NASCAR and IMSA races at Riverside on TV back in the mid 80's. I have to say that watching the 962's traversing that track got me hooked on sports car racing and ulitmately F1......and I haven't been the same since...... lol.gif
Ralliart
Riverside was a fantastic place - easy to get to, to get into and to get out of. First race I ever attended was held there, the '68 L.A. Times GP Can Am with Bruce McLaren winning. Saw more Can Ams there, USRRC, F5000 and IROC, through 1979. Turn 9 was always my destination as one could see them rounding 8, come towards me and either (depending on the configuration that day) take the short shoot or the long shoot. Many times the race would be on KLAC-AM and on the way home one could listen to the post-race analysis, interviews, etc. I was depressed when learning of its demise, the reasons and, what else, another business complex going up. We Americans love to build stadia (and circuits) only to demolish them later, along with our loves, with nary a thought to whom it may affect and nary a thought to what was. I commend anyone who wants to make the effort to put a plaque there in memoriam. I would get depressed all over again to see what has happened to Riverside (and Ontario Motor Speedway) so I'll just live with my very great memories.

Here is a great "1 Mans life adventure" type site and some cool Riverside stuff.

When I built Riverside track (virtually) for a simulator game, Frank Sheff (thru Bob Burnhardt)supplied me with hundreds of his personal photo collection from many years at Riverside to which I am very grateful for.

There are various sites i.e. Yahoo, that offer a limited amount of space to post photos that then can be [IMG] linked to. See if your own ISP doesn't provide some sort of complimentary space for that purpose.

Looking forward to seeing some of those early shots of Riverside and other tracks.

Ralliart, thank you for your words of encouragement. It's more than a plaque that we have in mind... review the thread for the monument's specifics and an illustration. Hopefully, a fitting tribute that will help to preserve the history of great racing in Southern California.
