The Hamilton controversies and Vettel's dominace has detracted from Alonso's great performances this year. He has the third best car and yet he is only 10 points behind Button in the standings. Everyone talks about how great Button has been this year, but Alonso in a slower car is only 10 points behind him. People also talk about how bad Massa has been. But I think Alonso has made Massa look bad, and I think Alonso was always a much better driver than Kimi Raikkonen who was overrated. Alonso is doing to Massa what Schumacher did to him in 2006. Great drivers make Massa look bad. Raikkonen was good but not great.

Hello Arrow.
Mm, more fanboy threads.
Vettel is the driver of the year, in my opinion. Because <insert fanboy talk here>. Hence proved.
Oh, and SchumacherIsTheGreatest.

Hello Arrow.

Wow. What is Raikkonen doing in a 2011 Alonso thread? I just came here because this thread is going to be epic and I want to be part of history. On topic: no, Alonso is not the driver of the season, but he is top 3 IMO. Over and out.

I prefer Alonso infinitely more than Vettel but one cannot say that Vettel has done worse this season, based on there not being enough situations in which Vettel could have done better.

The best Alonso does is downplay his chances before every single weekend and from then on it all seems like he has pulled off miracles.

Button's doing pretty well but sometimes I feel he could have capitalised more on Hamilton's failings so I'd put him behind Alonso. I think Alonso has been 2nd best driver of the season after Vettel.

??? He's usually there or thereabouts, and he's finished below (ex: Singapore) as often as he's finished above (ex: Abu Dhabi). + in comparison to his teammate, he is pulling off miracles. Someone should do a spreadsheet on his predictions or something; surprised I haven't already, as it's exactly the sort of pointless thing I like to do.

Alonso has got 10 podiums with the 3rd best car, while Massa's best result this year so far is...5th!
On another hand, Vettel has got 11 wins, and Mark hasn't even won a race this year.
The results should speak for themselves

A few flashes of brilliance over the season doesn't make you the driver of the season, you need to prove something different to the rest and be consistent with your performances, like Robert Kubica in 2010.

Yep, it's not as if his performance would have gone unnoticed.
From a fans perspective it's been a pretty satisfying season. He was "on it" all year, always pushing, with very few mistakes. Can't ask for much more than that. Well, obviously a faster car would be nice for 2012.

This is why I just give him the nod over SV; he's had to be pretty much on the limit all the time. Vettel has been fantastic, contrary to a few Lewis obsessives it's patenly not just the car, the kid is very, very good, but for me Fred has proved a fraction more. Funny really, I used to hate the guy, but you'd have to be a moron to deny his ability.

Funnily enough, you'd have to be a moron to deny the ability of any driver on the grid, but that doesn't stop most!
Alonso has been brilliant, as have Vettel and on most occassions Button too.

In the first three races of the season Alonso didn't show anything special.
After that, a pretty strong season with some really excellent races.
Overall Vettel's season was stronger and more consistent.
That Alonso is only 10 points behind Button is partly the result of Button's bad luck in Britain and Germany.

In my book Alonso and Vettel are tied for the title "best driver of 2011".
Both dominated their teammates in Qualifying (15-3 / 14-4).
Both dominated their teammates in the races aswell. Webber was just one time ahead - Massa two times (DNF´s of VET and ALO excluded). Vettel has 11 wins compared to Webber´s 0. Alonso has 10 podiums (including one win) to Massa´s 0.
Can´t see much difference.

So Vettel is less good because he almost always succeeds in taking the pole?
He can't help having a fast car. Webber BTW is not always #2 on the grid......

I think it's VERY close between them. Both have been flawless, both have outperformed their teammates almost every time on track and both wring the neck of their respective cars.
To be really sure we need them in equavilent machinery.
Altough many of my friends I use to watch the races with who are Alonso haters and Vettel fanboys have even started to admit that "OK, this guy is truly mindblowing" and shiver by the thought of Ferrari maybe brings a better car for next year... AND I UNDERSTAND THEM!!!!

You can´t never be sure as it also depends on the car-characteristics.
My guess:
Both in the RedBull -> Tie
Both in the Ferrari -> Alonso

Sounds nice, but would only work in theory as you never know in the real world whether two different cars are really dead equal performance-wise.
