There doesn't appear to have been any mention of Wendy Hamblin who in the 1960s raced, amongst other things, a Mini - wife of Keith I believe.

Posted on behalf of Ed Arnaudin.

The first journalist to be inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame, Denise McCluggage, beat all the boys and drove this Cunningham OSCA to victory lane on the day this photo was taken 9th May 1959 at Lime Rock.

Now well into 7th decade Denise still writes a widely syndicated column 'Drive, she said'.

She's actually into her ninth decade - or did you mean the seventh decade of her racing, or her column?

I recently came about the name of one "Miss Mazy", who drove a Hudson very competitively in a couple of dirt track races at Lima (OH) in 1918. A bit difficult to accurately rate her achievements, but she beat Ben Lawwell, a decently successful local independent racer for many years, in his 16-valve Ford, amongst others.

Do you have a link, or was that something you read in a book?

Quite by chance I came across a most entertaining profile of the delightful Ms Engeman in a 1967 issue of Autosport, written by Jenny Brittan. From it, we learn:
QUOTE
Keith St John proposed to her three days after they met and they have been engaged since last November. Naturally I asked when they were getting married - but Liane said they weren't! She thinks marriage has too many restrictions. "For example," she explains, "if we were travelling in different parts of the world and not together, one doesn't feel so responsible. If you have made no promises there are none to break and life is simple." Keith is her third fiancé and,she hopes, her last.

Liane explains that this season she has become very nationalistic and is wholly orange-orientated; so we shall see her arriving in an orange car and wearing orange gloves, crash helmet and shoes and an orange pair of fireproof overalls which Les Leston has made specially for her.

Liane wears hardly any make-up; when she goes out she wears a dab of perfume and a hint of pale pink lipstick. She has simple tastes and spends her free time watching television and going to films, especially westerns. On special nights out she likes nightclubs, "Especially the ones where you can shake - it's so good for my figure."

I thought that some of you might find it interesting smile.gif

>Not to forget Janet Guthrie, the first woman to compete in the Indy 500 We were both members of the South Shore Sports Car and Beer Drinking Society (how's that for PC) in 1960. She bought an XK120 Coupe from Dave Lamb that led to her SCCA competition.

Or Mrs. Agnes Mickel who consistently beat her husband in Hill climbs in the 1960s

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned Nordschliefe specialist Sabine Schmitz, winner of the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 1996 and 1997, both times in a BMW M3 entered and co-driven by Johannes Scheid. In 2006 Schmitz and Klaus Abbelen drove a Porsche 997 in the Nürburgring VLN endurance racing series. The same pairing finished third in the 2008 'ring 24 Hour race, beaten only by factory-backed entries.

She is perhaps better known in the UK as an occasional sparring partner for Jeremy Clarkson on "Top Gear", including coming close to matching Clarkson's Jaguar S-Type diesel lap of the Nürburgring in a Ford Transit van. There are persistent rumours that she is "the new Stig", replacing the outed Ben Collins.
ensign14
I am guessing Fraulein Schmitz (didn't she have a married racing name for a while?) has done more laps of the Ring than anyone else on the planet...

Yep, she was "Frau Reck" for a while.
Now the speedbee and her business partner Klaus Abbelen are a loving couple.

I will try to post more about Mary's racing career that culminated in a hugh accident in the Mini at Silverstone on the day that Tony Florey was killed in his Cobra at Brands. (Sid tells me that it was also the day that Peter Proctor had his accident elsewhere).

Any news on Mary? I'd be really interested to read some race results, with a view to giving her a profile on Speedqueens.

My latest Speedqueens project is chronicling the participation of female drivers in the Nassau Speed Weeks. It's a pain in the bum, as I don't have that book with all the results.

I'll try to find some results in the scrapbooks for you. LotusElise. Mary was most famous for her exploits in her Minis, but she also raced an MGB and Frazer Imp on occasion. There is also a photo on the wall of the Taylor's home of her climbing out of what appears to be Steve Thompson's Lola T60 which I have yet to ask her about. She had a nasty accident at Silverstone in a mini that hospitalised her, but I've not asked her too much about her career as yet as my focus has been on her husband.
However, I'm attending the BRDC Midlands luncheon at Nuthurst Grange tomorrow with her as a guest of Sid, so I will take the opportunity to quiz her!

Thanks for posting your clippings, Giraffe. Did Mary continue in hairdressing? I'm guessing she has retired now.
Gives a whole new meaning to Quentin Willson's oft-repeated putdown about "hairdressers' cars". wink.gif

For the curious, the second part of my Nassau Speed Week post is up now. I'm going to amend the first one later, as it's full of holes.

I know it's not rocket science

If I see a post I don't understand I look at the one immediately preceding it. If it doesn't tie in., I go back one more

But I'm buggered if I'm going to go back through an 800-post thread looking for it

If the "quote" function had been used there'd be no confusion. It's not rocket science
