Thanks everyone; almost there. Bessie Duller looks favourite.

The entry list for the Ladies race at the West Kent Motor Club on 11 July, 1925 (a scratch race albeit of only "about" 1/2 mile) was as follows.

#1 Miss Addis-Price (Ceirano)
#2 Mrs Crosbie (Essex)
#3 Miss V.Cordery (Invicta)
#4 Miss E.Smith (Austin)
#5 Mrs Lyle (Essex)
#6 Miss M.Cordery (Invicta)
#7 Mrs G.Duller (Lancia)
#8 Miss Hawkes (Eric Campbell)

Now, I saw a photo somewhere of the Cordery sisters gathered round the Invictas and I thought the caption mentioned three sisters but I may well be mistaken. Is it possible Bessie Hyams had been married before she married George Duller? Pure speculation.

I wonder if Miss Hawkes was any relation to the famous racing driver Mrs Hawkes lol.gif

... or even Mrs Stewart stoned.gif
David McKinney
I don't think Mrs Stewart was racing in 1925
LotusElise
She was - possibly only motorcycles. Her name was Janson then, I think.

At the risk of putting egg on my face, but I always thought her maiden name was Glubb? confused.gif

It was, but at various times she was married to Messrs Janson, Stewart and Hawkes.

I can confirm that a Gwenda M Glubb (also listed as Janson) married a Robert N Stewart in 1924.

A page about her "exploits" here http://tredelyn.blogspot.com/2006_06_01_archive.html

With reference to my mention of Mrs Duller being Violet Cordery sister, it came from page 314 of volume II of Billy Boddy's Brooklands. This was in 1925.

I believe the Dullers were living in a basement flat beside the Divers Inn at Braye Harbour, Alderney, C.I. in the early 60s. I was invited there for pre-lunch Sunday drinks and there were a number of mementoes about the rooms which suggested George was Duller but he would not talk about them.
Don't think of this as down market accommodation John Arlott retired to live in the same block.
So anybody researching births and marriages might also consider deaths in Alderney.

I have found a picture of Mrs Duller, in her car, in a 1994 Brooklands Society Gazette, but infuriatingly the photo is not linked to any of the articles. I'll scan it in when I can and see if anyone recognises her.
KJJ
I wonder how many of these Cordery sisters there were? We know Violette married John Hindmarsh and that Leslie - this seems to have been the spelling she used - was the wife of Sir Noel Macklin. Evelyn, who accompanied Violette on the 30000 mile run, married a Lt. Newell in Nairobi in 1931.

I believe that Noel Macklin snr married an Esme Victoria Stewart of Strathgarry, Perthshire in 1911, they must have divorced as Esme went on to marry a Hugh Orr-Ewing in 1922 - their son Hamish was for a short while the boss of Jaguar. Now I wonder if this is the same Esme Stewart who drove Mephistopheles in a record attempt at Brooklands according to Boddy's book? Anyway for collectors of dates Esme was born 3rd July 1887 and died 5th December 1967.
David McKinney
Hugh Eric Orr-Ewing and Noel Campbell Macklin were marketing a car called the Eric-Campbell at that time

John

Just a bit of a wild guess here regarding Mrs C. Christie .... I wonder if she was Cecil Marguerite Sidwell Christie, the daughter of the South African diamond tycoon Sir Abe Bailey. What makes me think that this might be a possiblity was that her step-mother ( and only five years older ) was the famous aviatrix Lady Mary Bailey whose brother Richard Westenra was a racer of sorts, so she certainly belonged to the right crowd, so to speak.

Cecil M S BAILEY married William F CHRISTIE in Marylebone in 1919.

Thanks KJJ and GeoffE

It seems Mrs C.Christie is Cecil (nee Bailey). Not Cecile or Cecilia, female derivatives of Cecil? Pity, as it would make it obvious that Cecil was a female and my records would not need a footnote.

John
KJJ
Sorry it's always Cecil as far as I can see from various BMD records and Times' notices. But are we sure this is the Brooklands Mrs Christie?

Anyway her dates are 8th June 1895 - 29th June 1962. An interesting thing about that 1919 wedding, the bride was given away by Rudyard Kipling, don't know why, perhaps her father didn't like giving things away.

At this point, we need Sherlock Holmes.

There is an entry about Ada Pace on the Italian Wikipedia which looks pretty thorough.

Sorry, Frank, I've only just spotted this post from back in November. Any chance of you posting some of the photos here?

Ms McCluggage never raced at Le Mans, although she was entered to drive there more than once ( A Cunningham Corvette in 1960, and later a 250SWB for the Chinetti NART). He personal account of her non-appearances can be found at:

She is a most knowledgeable and entertaining journalist, as well as being a very accomplished speaker, not to mention an exceptional racing driver in a huge variety of cars.

A fine article, but clearly written a goodly number of years ago. It mentions that Denise recently saw 60 in her rearview mirror. Fact of the matter is that Denise had her 80th birthday this past year. And sadly, Leon Mandel, who is quoted in the present in the article, departed us a good number of years ago. However, the age of the article does not detract from what it says about Denise.

Incidentally, Denise was the first woman to win a race at Road America, the 60 mile F,G, & H Production, H Modified event in September, 1960, in Briggs Cunningham's Osca 750. She then hopped into Briggs' BMC Mk I Formula Junior and took fourth in the immediately following race for Formula Juniors.

A good point Tom, reflecting the 'Good old days' when quality drivers drove different cars in races at the same meeting - and showing this practise was not only happening in Europe.
The Maserati Club (UK) has an article about the most successful OSCA racing car, the MT4. I'm sure the Cunningham MT4, which Ms.McCluggage drove on several occasions, must have contributed greatly to this record.

I have recently been corresponding with 'Kat' Teasdale

When a knee injury in 1980 sidelined “Kat’s” career as a downhill ski racer she refused to slow down and took up motor racing. Since 2006 Kat has been facing a new challenge, one I am sure that everyone on TNF will wish her every success with, that of dealing with a terminal illness. She is currently bedridden and on an IV. Her goal now is just trying to stay alive.

Starting at the grass roots level in Formula Ford 2000 Kat worked her way up to racing for the Factory Corvette and Pontiac Teams internationally in IMSA & World Challenge, culminating with her becoming the only woman ever to race, or qualify, in a NASCAR BUSCH Grand National North series event, and then one of eight in NASCAR BGN (the triple A to NASCAR Winston Cup). She also raced in Indy Lights and Formula Atlantic Championship. From her start, living at tracks each race weekend, life on the circuit, corporate promotions, endorsements & speaking engagements, moving up to the best-of-the-best in each series, Kathryn Teasdale truly exemplifies an athlete who’s tenacity worked with their talent to take them to the top.

In addition to driving for others Kat has also owned her own race team. She was victorious in many series of the sport 170 plus times, claiming various championships, track records, sport and peer awards. She is an avid golfer, Junior Champion, with memberships at two clubs (her father past president of the R.C.G.A. and member of the R & A, Worden Teasdale, and Uncle Al Balding past of the PGA Tour; currently Seniors tour), avid horsewoman since age 4 and skis when time allows with family and friends primarily at Horseshoe Heights Resort. After a decade plus of life on the road “and having better luggage than couches”, she adores ‘home’. Occasionally Kat returns to Charlotte, North Carolina where she lived, worked and breathed her sport, and ventures to the Foothills of the Blue Ridge mountains to climb with bobcats and walk with the deer. Kat’s ‘hobby’ has been real estate since age 18; “if there’s a path off the dirt road off the side road …. I’ve been down it looking for that ‘special’ place”.

Kathryn Teasdale has worked with many Fortune Top 50 corporations throughout her motorsport and business life. She has been a spokesperson, television personality and keynote speaker for General Motors (Chevrolet, Corvette and Pontiac Divisions), IGA, Coca-Cola, Molson Breweries, Bridgestone/Firestone, Methanex, Gordon Capital, etc.

Kathryn has been involved since age ten with The Easter Seal Society, Christian Children’s Fund and SPCA. As an adult Kat supports diligently The Lung Association, Canadian Cancer Society, C.A.R.D., Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, Canadian Special Olympics, and local community services such as men’s and women’s shelters.

Noting "RA Historian"'s comments about our friend Denise McCluggage and her successes at Road America, might "RA Historian" have any old photos of either Chuck Rickert or Dean Causey in the FUBAR Porsche?
A photo of the car in the pit lane at the 1963 RA 500 has been posted by Jerry Entin under the thread
"Bob Webb Durlite Porsche 550A". Any other photos of the FUBAR or information about those two gentlemen would also be appreciated.

I was afraid that you were going to ask that.... While I do recall seeing the Durlite racing back then, it never managed to find its way into my view finder. sad.gif

Would you still happen to have the old race program on a shelf somewhere that might offer a clue as to owner/entrant and hometown?
Alan Cox
It's a while since I found a new face to introduce to readers of this thread - Here is a French lady who, I am advised, is a star of "adult" movies in France, Laure Sainclair, who raced in the Toyota Yaris Challenge in 2001.

Many thanks!

I took this photo in New York, 1987. How many championship-winning racing drivers are there in it?

Twin Window
That's a poor show by TNFers; over eighty minutes have passed with no guesses!

The answer is two. Multiple champion Tommy Byrne is on the right, and the girl beside him is 2004 Formula Woman champion Natasha Firman. She was about eleven at the time of the photo. Smashing little girl.
ensign14
Two.

/edit Beaten to it. o:-)

I looked but honestly had no idea, that was too new for me, now if it had been 1967 I might have had a fighting chance............ lol.gif
David McKinney
I did recognise the one on the right
And I wondered if the bespectacled gent might have an Irish championship or two under his belt (and later grew a beard)?
Twin Window
No, David - that's Tommy's brother Peter who's never raced anything.
Ray Bell
From the pic, it looks like he's preparing to start Natasha's training right there...

Who are the others, Twinny?
Twin Window
I can only see one other, Ray! That's Peter's ex-wife, whose name I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember right now...!

Ralph Firman [edit: Senior] was on the left of the photo, but I cropped him out as I thought he was too much of a give-away.
Ray Bell
You're too quick, Twinny...

You didn't notice that I edited the post to cover that situation.
Twin Window
Sorry Ray, but you've lost me there!

Ok; here's another champion lady racer (with yours truly, I'm afraid) - who is it?

Ray Bell
I don't know, but I suspect she's smiling because she's just won a bet...
Twin Window

Thanks!
MoMurray
I am not sure that winning a bet would be the right guess...perhaps losing a bet ;)

My guess is that she is Fiona Butterfield...

Mo
Twin Window
Of course you're correct, Mo - Fiona it is, aka Mrs David Kennedy. Fiona won a ladies title in 1980 or '81 I believe, although I'm not sure of the correct name.

You remind me of that great pic Twinny, of Sir Les Patterson in his autobiography.

Tommy appears to have had a Good Lunch in the first pic...

In fairness he's caught in mid-blink.

As for the Les Patterson book, I'm afraid I've never seen it!

A website about Annie Soisbault has been launched.

What a nice Ferrari!

But, alas, look what happened to it!

Ouch! Too bad the nose of the GTO got punched in. It would be interesting to know the s/n of that car. A few years ago, there was a huge gathering of GTOs - about 17 or 18 if memory serves - at the Monterey Historics/Laguna Seca during which a lady driver destroyed the front of her GTO. History repeats, but a race car that hasn't been off course isn't being driven hard enough.

As for the Fiesta she drove in the 1979 Faberge Race/Rally Championship:
Bought from Peacocks of Balham by her rally co-driver Marilyn Tricker and husband Kevin.
Used as daily transport, eventually acquiring a 1600 engine.
Used as chase car on several International Rallies in Belgium.
Refurbished with new panels for UK club stage rallies.
Destroyed on first event at Goodwood.
Cut up and deposited in a Staines landfill.
