Too much time on my hands, BUT I have gone back and compiled the current F1 drivers career stats based on the current points system of 25 for a win, 18 for 2nd etc.
You get career points, GP Starts ( as opposed to entered), and GP points PER Start.
I have listed the Drivers by GP Points PER Start Ranking.
Interesting reading after the obvious, but just for you all we have:-
1. SCHUMACHER 14.26
2. HAMILTON 12.51
3. ALONSO 10.27
4. VETTEL 8.32
5. MASSA 7.57
6. KUBICA 6.51
7. BARRICHELLO 6.32
8. BUTTON 5.93
9. WEBBER 4.42
10.KOVALAINEN 4.23
11.ROSBERG 3.86
12.TRULLI 3.53
13.GLOCK 2.93
14.KOBAYASHI 2.07
15.de la ROSA 1.51
16.PETROV 1.46
17.SUTIL 1.00
18.BUEMI 0.90
19.HULKENBERG 0.77
20.LIUZZI 0.63
21.ALGUERSUARI 0.14
Yamamoto, Senna, Chandhok and di Grassi are at 0.00
NOT Castrol Rankings but a measure or at least another list.
If you have a particular driver ( i.e. HEIDFELD= 4.05) message me, ENJOY, DEBATE or DESTROY kiss.gif

Can you add average for this season?

For e.g:

Schumi would be 14.26 -> 3.38. Down 11!

Lewis 12.5 -> 14. (Shows how good MS's overall still is I suppose)

And this years biggest climber, Mark Webber 4.4 -> 13.77
weareracing
wave.gif
Yes, all that is possible too.
Michael started the season at 14.89 so his current average of 14.26 has been brought down by this season's average of only 3.38.
Mark started the season at 3.54 so his current average of 4.42 has been boosted by this season's average of 13.77.
ALL-TIME LIST of Drivers with a career average in double figures is pretty impressive and sets the pulse racing:-
FANGIO,
SCHUMACHER,
ASCARI,
FARINA,
HAMILTON (Yes, that's LEWIS),
FAGIOLI,
PROST,
CLARK,
SENNA,
STEWART,
ALONSO,
GONZALEZ.
wave.gif
weareracing
wave.gif
Tenmantaylor,
Those on an upward trend based on 2010 averages of points per start are as follows:-
HAMILTON = 14.00 (+ 1.87)
WEBBER 13.77 (+10.23)
VETTEL 11.62 (+ 4.29)
BUTTON 11.31 (+ 5.79)
ALONSO 10.85 (+ 0.63)
MASSA 8.38 (+ 1.61)
KUBICA 8.00 (+ 1.82)
ROSBERG 7.85 (+ 4.74)
SUTIL 3.46 (+ 3.09)
LIUZZI 1.00 (+ 0.48)
ALGUERSUARI 0.23 (+ 0.23)

Going Down we have:-
SCHUMACHER 3.38 (-11.51)
BARRICHELLO 2.31 (- 4.19)
KOBAYASHI 1.62 (- 3.38)
BUEMI 0.54 (- 0.64)
de la ROSA 0.46 (- 1.24)
KOVALAINEN 0.00 (- 5.21)
TRULLI 0.00 (- 3.74)

Rookies & Yamamoto not included at zero points in their careers.

I dont get it. So is that the average points they've got per race if the scoring system had been the same as it currently is?
weareracing
wave.gif
Jelinski619.
Yes, I've gone through every F1 GP and allocated points on the PRESENT system of scoring down to 10th place.
Like I say it's a pretty select list of drivers who have a CAREER RECORD in double figures.
You can check out the number of threads on this BB that argue that driver A is better than driver B.
Me, I got bored with that and tried to measure performance.
Like I say, maybe just another list BUT the top 100 really makes a good read and reminds you of drivers from PAST decades.
ENJOY or DESTROY with your thoughts, I'm just an F1 addict who had 4 weeks to kill between Hungaroring and Spa-Francorchamps.

How long did it take you to compile that list? Really impressive stuff!

The select list of drivers in the double figures is pretty amazing. Hamilton way above his idol Senna. Farina up there. Alonso still in there.

aditya-now, it's work-in-progress, but a couple of months so far, and thank you kiss.gif
The list gets better/more interesting.
THOSE with an average in the 9's (only 3):-
Mike Hawthorn 9.89
Kimi Raikkonen 9.60
Damon Hill 9.49

It was also quiet humbling to research when you realised the intensity of ALL the years leading up to Imola 1994.
The names of those that died and were seriously injured kind of imprints on your mind.

So like I say I now admire ALL 24 drivers on the grid up.gif

I'll post the drivers with career averages in the 8's, 7's, 6's, etc later.

Drivers with an average of 8 or more GP points per start based on the present 25-18-15 etc :-

It will be great for all of us to see the total list, say, down into the 7s.
Expressed in new money (new points system) this also really helps us for historical comparability and shows a total picture of the complete F1 history.

It is interesting to see not only Juan Manuel Fangio, but also Ascari, Farina and Hawthorn up there.

And yeah, it must have been terrible for weareracing when counting all the points together how a number of drivers simply ceased to exist from one race to the other....

OK, aditya-now and thank you.

Good to see that Fangio remains The Man!

I am a bit puzzled about Luigi Fagioli showing up at #5 though. Is this a statistical anomaly? One shared win with Fangio and a 2nd place, out of 7 GPs contested.
weareracing

Hi there BRG,
Fagioli had 4 2nd places and a 3rd place finish in the 1950 season, plus a retirement at Monaco.
Shared the win with Fangio in 1951.
Thanks for taking the time to read.

Worth of note that Luca Badoer would have 26 points, so about half points per race.

Spot on Bleu, 26 "new" points from 50 GP starts = 0.52 for Luca.

Seriously impressive list!

Thanks for all the work, indeed it gives some measure for all the discussions. Among other things it shows what a lost talent for F1 Montoya is. Then again, Fagioli is probably not an all-time #5, so the list has to be taken with caution. Nonetheless, it gives some absolute measure, what with Prost above Lewis, and Stewart in 10th while Lauda only in 27th....

There is a lot to be analysed from this list.

aditya-now,
Yes, when I was compiling this list you would get moments that made you smile, (see Piquet & Mansell STILL locked in combat), and moments of great sadness as careers were extinguished (5.5-7.0).
For sure, to use an F1 drivers turn of phrase, the list leaves much to debate.
Lewis riding high but NEVER a season with a dog of a car to drive.
Alonso in DOUBLE FIGURES having had a year in an uncompetitive Minardi.
The 1950's SHOULD be taken with caution and YES Fagioli is a case in point, the ALFA's were BULLETS compared to the opposition.
I have to say that the list is like honey to me, so much to enjoy which overpowers the loss of SO MANY YOUNG MEN.
And playing devil's advocate as I depart, it kind of lays to rest the KUBICA v HEIDFELD debate.

I'm a kinda Kubica fan but please remember what cars Nick had to drive in his early F1 years, like that 2000 Prost or that 2004 Jordan......

If anything it justs shows how important the car is. Plus, the less championship races of the early years and careers being cut short meaning drivers in what appear unusual placings like the forementioned Fagioli, Perdisa, Parkes, etc.

Thank You all for your appreciation.
Am I allowed a blush.gif ?
It's true that the list is NOT bomb-proof, the 1950's for instance does slant toward any driver in a dominant car.
However I think that the longer a driver's career the better a guide it becomes.
Some interesting and familiar names that DID not quite make the cut-off (not intentional but it was pretty much the top 100 that had 4.00+ pts per start).
Trulli, Alboreto, Boutsen, Brundle, Herbert, Webber (he'll be there by the end of the year!), Mass, Siffert, Nannini, Pace, Wurz, Nico Rosberg (should be in too by the end of this year),Schell, Blundell, Hailwood, Rosier, Pryce, Gregory, Courage,Jabouille, Attwood, Prince Bira (HE REALLY WAS A PRINCE!), Elford, Herrmann, Godia, Donohue the "B" list if I may call it that is an impressive and evocative club in it's own right.
So many ways to use the stats, looking ahead to Monza for instance, you can see who performs well at any given track.
The following drivers racing this year have done well:-
Hamilton, Button (twice), Kubica (twice) and Kovalainen have been on the podium,
Vettel, Alonso, Schumacher and Barrichello are all race winners
Enjoy,

Can I make a request?
Could you do the average but only considering the races they finished or were classified? Nowadays absurb reliability (or was it older days absurd unreliability?) distorts things in favour of those who raced from 2000 onwards.

I was thinking that.

The number of drivers in a race would distort it as well...

Just giving you some more variables to throw in to your number crunching wave.gif
Dan333SP
That's a good idea, it'd massively help a driver like Clark who was often in first place or out of the race with a broken Lotus. Just wanted to say cool stats, and it's interesting to see how drivers moving from good cars to bad this year are adversely affected (Trulli, Heikki, Schumacher, Glock).
BRG
That's really hard to do - a lot of DNFs would be accidents or otherwise self-inflicted, rather than simple mechancial failures. It would need a lot of work to trawl through all the reports.
Atreiu
We can wait for a weerk or so, or he could limit it to the WDCs only.

wave.gif
Hi everyone and thanks for your input.
I can see where you are coming from regarding reliability, BUT I prefer the randomness of a non-finish, it's part of the uncertainty of F1, like the weather?
I wholeheartedly agree about any distortion, like I say it's not bomb-proof, but hopefully it provides a relatively logical yardstick for discussion and comparison.
I can however provide the results by DECADE, (the 50's are probably the most distorted given the birth & infancy of F1 in that era) which should give a more balanced view of driver comparisons within that particular era of an evolving Formula1.
No time before Monza, but will work backwards from 2009-2000 when I return.

Look at that. Yoong was better than the current Force India drivers. Quick, someone get him a drive!

Again, very impressive and telling.
Again, it shows what a driver we have lost in Juan Pablo Montoya. Hakkinen better than Alonso, although in his last two years. Ralf Schumacher better than expected, given his years at Toyota. And Rubens, not that bad....

Were was that thread again with best driver of the decade (2000 - 2009) - this list throws new light on it!

Overall average lower this decade as reliability issues plague all teams, the Turbo effect?
A good 1st season from Alesi, Carlos Reutemann bows out at the top, whilst Emmerson Fittipaldi suffers as a result of finishing his career racing for the uncompetitive and unreliable cars of Wilson Fittipaldi.
More names to conjure with from a bygone era, ENJOY.

Your lists of the 90s, 80s and 70s - thank you very much for the great service you provide.

Each list gives a lot of things to be discussed, and they are indeed amazing, what with Reutemann, Pironi (despite his bad 1981 season) and also the fact that Senna was never on top in any decade, but Prost was twice.
These discussions of course would have to take place in the Nostalgia Forum, and maybe it would be a good idea to post each of the decades with your rating according the new points system in TNF as well - there is lots to be discussed.

I agree, looking at the great and good drivers that have given their life for the sport - it indeed sends chills down your spine.

I'll maybe post the original list and see if there is interest in the split by decade.
