Ok here's a question for you all, does anyone know the military band that used to play at Brands Hatch in the very early 70's,would it have been the Coldstream guards?.....and now the really difficult question, what tune did they play as they marched up the track.

I'm just very interested to know. smile.gif

The military marching bands were a feature at Brands from the 1960s. I remember they were present at the 1964 European GP and thereafter, of course, at the Guards Trophy race meetings held on August Bank Holiday Mondays.

The 1965 programme lists who were playing at the jazz concert after the race - Chris Barber's band with Ottilie Patterson - but fails to mention which of the Guards' regiments provided the military music earlier in the day. Sorry.

Found these details in the Brands 1964 GP programme - "...at 1pm, the bands of the Royal Dragoons and the 1st Battalion Royal Scots."

There is a clip of a marching band (clad in bearskins) on the Brunswick F1 season review video for 1970, playing on the pit straight at Brands. Presumably this would have been the Dragoons?. I can't identify the piece of music, though.

Was it the same regiment's band which was featured briefly in the Brands sequence of "Grand Prix - The Movie"?

Have just looked up the details in my 1970 British GP programme which lists:

1.15pm Military Band display by the Band of the Welsh Guards (by permission of Colonel V.G. Wallace, Lieutenant Colonel Comanding Welsh Guards). Director of Music: Captain D.K.Walker ARCM, psm

5.00pm Concert by Mr Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band.

I recall between numbers Acker had to announce that Jochen Rindt had been disqualified and Jack Braham awarded the race (or visa versa). He was totally confused at the time, and I probably am now!!!!

Thanks for the details, Tony! smile.gif
