what do you think after this race with just 6 to go, is ferrari in the position to win?

Aug 29 2010, 15:16
No. Alonso still has a shot. 6 races left. McLaren and Red Bull can still stumble.

If a driver was 16 points behind with 6 races to go under the old points system, would you expect them to give up?
Basically the same situation here with Alonso, who's still well in contention.
No.
Alonso is 41 points back with 150 points still in play. Furthermore, there is a possible 258 points still in play for the teams and Ferrari is ~70 points back.

If I were a sponsor and my team "switched focus" to next year, I'd demand my money back...

No, but I'll make Alonso get his act together next race.

alonso is fast but he's getting no luck this year at all, i would keep fighting, there's 150 points on the table and he's only 41 behind.
It's better to keep on paying attention to this season too.
If something weird happen to one of the guys in top, he would get again very close. If this happen and Ferrari give up, they'll regret it for ever.
Besides, even if Alonso doesn't take the championship, his results may be very decisive in the championships as he'll probably finish some races between Webber and Hamilton.
And for the shacke of expectacle, I hope they don't.

No, they should drop the team orders instead...

Aug 29 2010, 15:27
I don't especially care, but no I don't think they should.
A lot can still happen in the championship and the changes in next year's technical changes are not so significant, so upgrades applied this year can still be beneficial for next.
they have a singapore update on the way, after that I m sure they will give up unless they have a realistic shot at the championship

Aug 29 2010, 15:29
No. And just to be sure, nope.
Alonso can still win the WDC without any 'help' whatsoever from any of the opposition and you people want the team to quit?!? What, besides the obvious, is wrong with this place???

Aug 29 2010, 15:39
yes maybe a team with a smaller budget if after monza they have another bad race, they would switch focus, but ferrari probably will not and battle till the end, after all this is not like 2009 where they had no chance.
Anyways IMO if mclaren develpes as they normally do and red bull keps its pace, the championship handy for them

lol reminds me of 2008 where Ferrari concentrated like mad on that season, yet were crappish in 09, yet Macca was crap in 09 till a point then flourished. Why can't Ferrari ever follow suit these days. They need better people behind the scenes like in the MS days me thinks, and the drivers to do better.

Aug 29 2010, 15:47
No.
What they should do is get Alonso to drive at level he's expected to. Despite a clear number one position at Ferrari, a car capable of fighting for wins pretty much everywhere and even a gifted win by his team mate, he is still far behind in points. Why? Because Alonso himself has failed to deliver countless times and would probably be leading the championship without his own errors.
So what they should do is get Alonso to perform properly and surely they have a good chance at the title(s).

It would be mad for them to drop this season... so maybe they will? Who knows with the current management.

Just two races after the team-order, one that would propel the mighty Alonso to yet another WDC. No way!

Yes they should. No they shouldnt.
Frankly does focusing on next car result in a better 2011 car, no I dont think Ferrari are top of the class today. They need to steal Newey from RBR.

Should they do a BMW like in 2008?
As long as they are in for a shot - "you may not have a chance, but use it"
Next race it can be exactly the other way round, with Alonso winning and Hamilton and Webber not scoring....

Just 6 races to go?
What a funny way of looking at things - in the first 17 years of the WDC (1950 till 1966) there were on average 8 races per season, so do you think the teams competing gave up "with just 6 races to go"?
As long as it's mathematically possible, why should anyone give up (unless they are called Mario Theissen)?

If it means spoiling the party, im all for push till the end.
I don't think they will. The car isn't bad at all, they're just not getting results. If the car is crap, and it'd take some Herculean effort to save it, I can see them switch focus. But that is not the case.

focusing on 2010 so early in 2009 only cost them the 3rd place in the WCC last year and it didnt produce the car they wanted for 2010 so definitely no, they shouldn't focus on 2011.

They can't and besides, it doesn't matter. As a sponsor, if I give them say, $20 million for 2010, I expect that gift to apply to the 2010 season. 100%. I'm not going to finance 2011 with my 2010 money...
It's too late to switch to 2011, they started earlier last year. Maybe switch focus to 2012?
Anyway the problem isn't the car. The problem is 2 mediocre drivers are not delivering the results the car is clearly capable of.

Obviously not but it looks like neither Ferrari nor Alonso really look serious to win the Championship this year.
