Or Formula1.com did indeed make it up, and NL just wanted to have it corrected. Sure, that would be weird too, and one wonders why the website would do such a thing, but then it would not be the first time that a news outlet (or a journalist selling an article to a news outlet) lied, either.

Formula1.com? That is the official site. If they posted wrong info it must be the easiest thing in the world to ask THEM to correct it, without going through Italian newspapers.

Formula1.com is full of wrong info. For instance, it has retroactively assigned championship positions to those with no points for every year of the championship, despite it only being a recent development.

Yes, indeed. It´s a terrible position famous people are sometimes in.

Still, what struck me was that the original wording was typically Lauda.
And, that vis-a-vis Corriere della Serra Niki asked "please write that I didn´t do any interview." It would have sufficed to say "I did not do any interview".

Still, it is basically the Bernie Ecclestone site.

So whatever appears there, there must be a reason for it. Would it be far-fetched to think, that, if the article genuinely was not true, Bernie knew about it and yet let it be published on formula1.com?

What I mean is that is has a distinct publisher that you can contact and there is laws against printing untruths and refuse to correct it if you are made aware of the mistake.

"I've never said that stuff," Lauda told the Italian press. "On television I only said that team orders are not good for F1 and for the spectacle, and that a team like Red Bull, by leaving Webber and Vettel free to fight, is doing the right thing. Please write that I didn't do any interview."

The truth might be in the detail: "on television I only said..." - did he say these things maybe somewhere else than on television?
"Please write that I didn´t do any interview...." - but it may have been off the record.

So strictly Lauda is not lying but he still could cover up the truth - interesting case.

Him and Jackie Stewart like to air their views a lot. But why not? It's not compulsory to agree with them.

IMO and just IMO he will be remembered 50% for his driving 50% for being so exposed after that , insulting drivers, making wrong predictions, saying smthin then denying it...

The legend would remain in a better position without all this

For me, it is like with most people, sometimes I agree with him, sometimes I don't. I do think I agree with him more often than not and I do consider his opinions even when I do not agree with them.

For me, Lauda, after all he went through and still accomplished, is fully entitled to say whatever he wants. I don't always agree, but I always listen. Same for Jackie Stewart.

Not so for today's coddled drivers...

right so because of what he acomplished he s fully entitled to call robert kubica "der pollack" wich is a derrogatory comment that the nazi wiould use against polish people in WW2

Or saying ferrari test drivers are useless or that prost was a dog but alonso is worse, and many more ...

from this point of view the more you achieve the more you can lose respect for people

IMO people would rate him better without all this

In my opinion, you are completely and absolutely wrong.

IMO Lauda will be remembered for being the 100% hero who returned to racing virtually from his deathbed, within weeks of receiving the last rites. He will also be remembered for coming out of retirement and winning again. He will be remembered for many things. No-one (except perhaps you and the wretched Horse Whisperer) will care two hoots for any throwaway comments he may make, and they will have zero effect on his reputation.

All IMO of course.

What surprises me is the harsh stance he takes on Ferrari ("getting a pasting"), either he knows something about the world council we don't know yet, or he tries to create a certain climate. It's not totally out of the possible that he does so, as, after having been one of the first to spot Alonso as a huge talent, later Lauda turned sour on the Spaniard (obviously Fernando was not open to Lauda's advances.

Why? He never liked driving for Ferrari -he didn't like Enzo's mind games, he thought Montezemelo was a nutcase.

Lauda has never been politically correct, he seriously does not give a f--k about appearances.
He's one of the few people around F1 that don't cheerlead about the series and he isn't afraid of Bernie, or anyone else.

You obviously know nothing about his driving career.

He called Ferrari's test driver's useless before Badoer embarrassed himself, and proved him right.
