well then by all means continue on...LOL lol.gif

Austin Bergrstrom Airport has very few International flights.
Most would have to go threw DFW, and then drive South.
Drive is about 3 hrs (or 2 with a Lazer Detector and a well oiled M5)

Great News! clap.gif

Austin is a great city to visit. There is lots to see and do.

However, I would of prefer for it to be located in the greater Dallas - Fort Worth or Houston areas for easier accessiblity.

Love the east bound one, yea Smokey and the bandit!

Good news that the US gets a GP. 1000 miles from Chicago though. It was definitely easier to drive to Indy.

That being said, the Texas track will be the first symmetrical F1 track and look like this:

I think it makes sense to have a Grand Prix in the USA.

I just really, really hope that the circuit ends up being capable of demonstrating the extraordinary perfomance of a modern F1 car.

I've long felt that the circuits must have played a part in the in the apparent (from this side of that Atlantic) lack of interest in F1.

It has been such a shame that F1 hasn't visited some of the great American circuits. Opinions may have changed.

Indianapolis always struck me as the most idiotic place to stage a Grand Prix. Funny little cars going so slowly the wrong way round a third of the circuit, teetering awkwardly round a kart track and worrying whether their tyres could cope.

Well being of mixed race, Austin isn't exactly my choice of dream vacation spot - so in as far as picking spots in America, it wasn't the greatest of locations. But it does have the benefit of being in the middle, so access is pretty fair for getting there. My experiences in Austin have been good and bad, but the city itself and surrounding area is cool and if they build for the track (in addition to the track), they may become the moderate mecca of the South - a regular liberal bastion...

or not.

Austin IS liberal.....VERY liberal.

Epic fail. It's the heart of NASCAR-land. Many people in such an area are stereotypically referred to as a certain colour of the neck.

And it will be a tilke-drome in the middle of nowhere if they want planning permission in Austin.

They're seriously expecting to make up the costs of building from scratch with ticket sales to an entirely alien audience?

I don't expect it to last it's contract length, or even half.

That's before the F1 season even starts, so I doubt they'd have the race then.roflmao.gif They'll probably have it a week before or after the Canadian GP.

Good to see that F1's going back to the USA.

Is ecclestone subzidizing this from his pocket? Otherwise I predict an epic fail. Why would F1 interest Americans now when it didn't do so when there was still some excitement left and drivers like Montoya and Scott Speed driving.

Guess I have a vacation to set up for 2012.

Texas is a lot of fun. The people there are very nice in the big cities. I spent a few weeks in Dallas in 2008 and loved every minute of it. Even though it was 95F in June with 105% humidity. drunk.gif

Not that Barrack Obama is a liberal, but check out Travis County compared to most of the state. The other blue counties are where lots of hispanics dwell and vote Democrat, despite socially conservative views.

Summer evenings in Austin would be perfect for a night race. It's t-shirt and shorts weather all day long. The daytime during the summer is basically the worst thing ever.

How is that feasible in the eyes of FOM who schedule such races to suit European audiences?

American afternoon is prime-time televison time in Europe.

Unless they bring it so ridiculously far forward such that it will be on at 6am CET?

I agree.

It makes me laugh when I read some of the ignorant posts in this thread referring to the "rednecks" in the Austin area.

Ferrari keen to link with American team and I thought early in the season Ferrari were against the new teams. Sounds like Ferrari want to be able to supply customer cars to an American team. Di Montezemolo has also said race weekends should be reduced to two day events, I'd agree providing they abolished qualifying and have the grids decided by reverse of the points positions, after the first race whicch would be three days long with a two hour no holds barred qualifying.

But ... Austin ... Texas ambivalent.gif

What this tells me is that you have never been to Austin. Just because it's in texas doesn't mean that the entire city is full of saloons and cowboys riding around the desert. Austin is a very progressive city, with a large variety of ethnic backgrounds not limited to european, african, and asian americans. It is very liberal, and many texans even consider it something "out of the ordinary." Don't let the name texas fool you into thinking the entire state is full of yeehaws and close minded hicks. I mean, Texas isn't even considered part of "the south," which is where I'm sure so much of the stereotyping comes from. Texas is considered to be "the west" like arizona, colorado, dakota...

Austin is also home to a huge public university, which means that the nightlife is awesome. There will be bars, pubs, clubs, and lots of very attractive, forward thinking, and educated young women. What's not to like? The city has all it needs to host an amazing grand prix weekend. Please don't let unfounded stereotypes ruin this race before it starts, as seems to be happening with india/korea. Its a disgusting mindset.

Austin is the whitest 'major' city in Texas. Most progressive cities are demographically similar to Austin.

The White City

So were there rumours about this? I've been reading the F1 blogs and forums every day and have heard about a return to IMS, Vegas, NY/NJ, and in the past week Monticello. Austin seems to have come out of nowhere.

As to when to schedule the race. The week before Canada would make sense. But it could also be in April on its own as we don't know (correct me if I'm wrong) that China will be signing another contract with BE. According to Wikipedia the average high and low in April is 26C and 14C respectively.

QUOTE (stevvy1986 @ May 25 2010, 19:22) *
Well, Canada is usually the middle of June. End of May could possibly be an issue though, as Americans seem to love Nascar and the Indy 500, which always take place on the last Sunday in May (in terms of Nascar I mean the Coca Cola 600 which is 1 of their bigger races I think), and I'm not too sure if they'd fancy having (for example) the Indy 500 and the USGP on at basically the same time of day, with a big Nascar race following it. It'll probably end up as a back to back with Canada, so Canada is mid June, and the USGP taking place 1 week either side of that.

I think it should be part of a double header in North America and ideally two in four weekends including Brazil so the teams can cut down on transport costs. My fantasy World Championship would have one in Mexico as well that way there would be three races in North America, one of the big markets for manufacturers and because of the lack of North American GPs it could be argued that was one of the reasons manufacturers left the sport in the 2008-2009 period.
noikeee
Geez, sorry again for the rednecks comment, okay? I had no idea that Austin was an odd city with a different culture to the surroundings, in fact don't think I've ever heard of the city before today. Sorry.

105% humidity? lol...if you think dallas is humid...try the east coast or further south like houston. dallas is more dry climate than humid. then again, everything seems humid when coming from southern california...

Well, count me among those who never saw this coming in a million years. eek.gif The more I think about it though, the more sense it makes. I recall reading somewhere that, statistically, Austin is one of the most highly educated cities in the U.S.; certainly runs counter to any "redneck" rap. Also, Austin is geographically smack in the middle of the NASCAR belt so it's quite possible that the race could generate some new U.S. fans -- out of initial curiosity if nothing else.

In any case, I am delighted to see F1's return (especially in light of LdM'S comments regarding Ferrari's desire to work with a U.S. led team). Now, if only they come up with a kick-ass circuit.
Alfisti
This is not as surprising as some thing. Texas is one of the few economic success stories in the USA with a clever, progressive economic think tank that has led to a great deal of investmewnt in the state froma range of industries.

I'd strongly consider going to a GP in Austin.

Texas
The rumors that I've heard are that the track will be built Southeast of town not too far from the airport. They just built a huge new tollroad through this area, so makes sense from a planning standpoint. The bad news is this is not in the hill country. There is certainly opportunities for nice elevation changes, but not what I would dream of if I had my choice. This also makes it easier from a PR standpoint, since the nature lovers won't care about this undeveloped area. either way, it's a small trip from downtown. Close to a new, modern highway and has the best chance to actually get built, so I'm not complaining. I doubt it would cost more than $150m to build here, depending on the lavishness. Labor is very cheap here and you don't have to worry about unions driving the cost up.

For those of you who have not been here previously, a few notes. While there are not a ton of direct international flights into Austin, Houston and Dallas are only a short flight away and are hubs for Continental and American and between them, serve almost every International airline. Growing up in Houston, there is a huge connection between Texas and the Middle East. Considering a bunch of people used to fly their private planes in to just to hit some strip clubs, this could easily have the same draw. We are also easily accessible (relatively speaking) to most of Mexico, Central America, The Caribbean, All of North America and parts of South America. We host the SXSW Music/Interactive/Film festivals every year that draw hundreds of thousands of people from all across the globe, so we are used to putting on a good show for our guests. For that matter, you're more welcome here if you're from Norway than you would be if you're from New York. wave.gif

We also have the Austin City Limits Music festival every October that has attendance around 150,000 over a three day weekend. The University of Texas is located here and we have one of the largest football stadiums in the world (102,000 capacity) that has sold out every game since 2000. Dell Computers is based here. Samsung, Motorola, AMD, Freescale, 3M, IBM, Apple and many other huge companies have large offices here. This town is super casual, but there is something for everyone. I can wear shorts and flip-flops into even the nicest restaurants.

I'll think of more to add later on, but that's a good start.
