At one point in the 80's every driver on the grid had a Benz of some description regardless of who they drove for and many still do.
If you ever drove a higher range Benz for any extended length of time you would understand why.
WTF?
Smoking pot again, have we?
If you'd bother to check, you'd know that Mercedes offered huge discounts to F1 drivers at the time so they could claim that while Mercedes wasn't involved in racing, the racing drivers actually drove Mercedes cars. As most drivers didn't earn huge salaries in those days, a heavily discounted Mercedes was a very attractive deal for them. Those that did have enough money still got a Mercedes for the WAG or to sell on after having satisfied the terms of the agreement with Mercedes. The acknowledged quality of Mercedes (and I drove a 190E for many years and loved the car) had
nothing to do with it.
These days, that scheme has ended but F1 drivers can still usually get a discount because it gives the manufacturer p.r. value if driver X drives their car. However, corporate influence means that most drivers get a affiliated car to drive and are not allowed to make much noise about any other cars they might have in their stable. For example, Schumacher used to have a Bugatti EB110, which he allegedly sold after joining Ferrari.
