Full Version: Would you pay to watch motorsport on the Internet?

I thought we can help Bernie and his colleagues in other sports a bit, they seem. To me, it seems like they are completely oblivious for the fact that Internet is perfect for motor sport. Yes, I call it a fact and the future will prove me right smile.gif

I don't like paying for stuff. And yes, I would also like it on my phone.

I suppose I would be willing to pay for the occasional race if I was away from a TV (which means yes, needs to be on my phone), but I think testing and practice ought to be free as a taster.

I paid for the iPhone live timing app for two races last year where I knew I wouldn't be near a TV and it was OK. Not brilliant because I was on the move and relying on 3G most of the time, but OK.

The only motorsport that I would watch on the internet is superbikes, but only if it is free. All other motorsports aren't exciting enough for me to even consider watching them on an internet feed even if they are free, just keep them on television.

I would love to see more karting, but maybe that is because we get no karting over here.

I could pay some, if there was good service available, but I bet those who are not fans wouldn't.
mclarensmps
I do already lol.gif
Don_Humpador
The only free motorsports I watch are F1, MotoGP and the BTCC marathons on Sunday afternoons that consist of about 12-14 races in one afternoon, fantastic stuff (unless you include the WRC summaries on Dave, which are pretty crap)

I'd love to be able to see GP2 like I used to on ITV4, but since that's gone, I don't really want to pay for it.

And they wonder why so many people use streaming sites.. rolleyes.gif

I hate the idea of paying to watch F1 races. But if this happened, I'd be left with no option but to pay- I cannot go without it! I'd fork out for practice and qualifying as well.
At the moment I'm not fussed about having access to coverage on my phone, but I'm sure my view might change in the next few years...

If it were cheaper than paying for a cable plan that included SpeedTV, then I'd be happy too. Especially if I had the option to watch it at my leisure, rather than having to watch it live (which is a little inconvenient in the US).
Demo.
There is no way that FOM are going to ever relese live coverage of the racing via the internet.
Most TV stations already buy rights to series that include internet rights ( hence the BBC Iplayer).
Only a fool would upset all their customers and no matter what you think FOM and BE are clearly not fools.
However i cannot see the problem with having recorded races shown, but who is going to pay for recorded races when most already have a PVR that will record it for free.
I either watch it live or watch it when i get home on my pvr after all why peep at a 3.5/17 inch screen when i can enjoy it on my 42" one instead?

F1 is pretty well covered, at least the races, but for instance GP is not. Also, when it comes to F1, more and more countries are going PPV anyway, or the skip qual and practice. If I had to choose between PPV on TV and PPV on Internet, I would choose the latter. I do not think streaming would be a threat for TV rights either, not for those who broadcast it free, cause in those countries very few would start paying.

But we are in a transitional phase, streaming has not been a realistic alternative until recent years so most of the business part is still stuck on the TV side. But this will change and it will change fast because broadcasting on the Internet is a lot cheaper and it contains much more possibilities for marketing. Instead of showing a normal ad on TV, they can let us buy the stuff the want to sell instantly with just a tap on the touchpad. They can make us fill in surveys, play sponsored games and make a big singalong in the national hymn.

I already did last year, for F1 (having gotten tired of free streams that either worked or - far too often - didn't), and for 24 heures du Mans, as it was much better deal than getting a pay channel to watch a sincle event.

And do you really think those TV stations that do buy into the F1 season are just going to say ok we dont mind you charging us for the stream and then also directly competeing with us?
Why do you think we have the likes of the BBC Iplayer .... because they are becoming more total delivery spectrum aware. Internet to them is one of their present delivery formats, along with TV and radio.
They buy an exclusive contract and one things certain if they do not get that exclusivity they are clearly not going to want to pay the same as they will lose some of their customers.
At what point do you think FOM would be happy to start losing garanteed income for a unkown income?
come to think of it how many of the teams would agree to potentualy losing income because some fans want the option of a new deleivery method that 99% will never use?
Lets remember that already if you live in this (UK) country you do have both streaming and via phone ablilities to watch F1 via i player but how many have?

Online or on TV?

I'd be interested in paying for the 24h. It was fun but annoying watching free streams last year.

All good things are free up.gif Amen
I would not spend a penny on anything on the internet & that is final.

Some look for the hurdles, others look for possibilities.
What if those who buy exclusive broadcast rights get a cut of the Internet sales? For instance. And "losing a guaranteed income for a unknown income" is just crap. If FOM continue like they do they will self implode anyway, the markets are changing, the viewing model are changing. People spend more and more time in front of the computers and less and less in front of the TV's. What does that tell you?
The Ragged Edge
If it is not available on freeview or with your SKY Sports package, I wouldn't bother. I forked out the extra tenner for ESPN, because me and my son watch al ot of football and we get the bonus of UFC. My SKY HD bill including 10 meg broadband + phone is around the £60 a month mark. Then again I pay around £3 a month to access the few articles on autosport.com plus, how very lucky I am. rolleyes.gif If F1 was only available on the internet, then I would seek alternative avenues of watching it. IE; a torrent download etc.

It tells me if you were a manufactuer of a product and you offerd me an exclusive contract to sell a unit in an area that i would not touch it as you would be happy to offer the same to the bloke next door.

I do agree that the delivery methods are changing but as i already have said in the UK we already have the ability to watch on both phones and internet most sports that the BBC have rights for BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE USED IT LIVE.
Does anyone know of the % of people who watched F1 live on TV and how many streamed it via Iplayer?
I would expect you will find that still its well over 99% who watched it live on TV V live on iplayer.
How is pointing out facts looking for problems they are clear facts.
On one hand you have a known income on the other you have an unkown income so its a gamble and as the F1 teams income from FOM is based on a percentage of the profits of FOM their income is directly linked and i am certain the teams would rather garantee their incomes than give you a medium that is available but under utilised right now.

I have an ES Player subscription, but I don't really use it to watch motorsport. smile.gif

Nope, not enough value for money. For about five minutes, I considered paying for F1 coverage when it went on pay-TV in Finland back in 2007 but I couldn't be arsed and soon realised it didn't feel like I was missing out on much. That said, I think I may actually end up missing live MotoGP this year - perhaps even enough to want to pay for it.

Correct.
As a matter of fact, we pay for TSN AND Speed, then they black out Speed.
How is that for paying for something and not getting it.

Hmm funny isn't it that here with a bunch of hardcore motorsport fans many won't pay or are hesitant to pay for it, can you imagine how few of the casual fans would want to pay for it.

Me, I just watch live what I can and really want, the rest of the races/series are freely available as torrents and I can watch those when it suits me. So pay for it, not me.
THE "driverider"
I would pay for any motorsport if I had the money. I would have Sky Sports and ESPN if I had the money and Speed TV if I had the luck.
Turbo4
Would gladly pay for streaming F1 Practice, Qualifying and Races to my computer, and possibly to my iphone.

F1 testing too if it was bargain basement pricing.

I thought you lived in Sydney? On pitpass, you list your location as Sydney. confused.gif If it's really Finland, now I understand the Kimi fetish.
Captain Tightpants
No, I wouldn't pay, especially if they stopped televised broadcasts. I'm on a uni budget and I'm on a tight download quota to match.
ehagar
I already pay for MotoGP coverage, and I would pay for World Superbike if it was available. But I'm nuts, I *have* to see a bike race live... especially with Speed TV's stupid schedule.
slideways
Personally I would pay because I can afford it and have to rely on amateur streams for the practice sessions and live qualifying. At home I get the races live so would watch them on TV but I also travel a bit for work and a backup live stream on my laptop would be handy for when I'm away.
Christian Szymczak
I would. The coverage here in the states is not so good. I would pay for the ability to switch to the on-board camera of my choice during the race. I'd watch the entire race from the on-boards.
Atreiu
Yes, of course.
I already pay to read about it here. It`d be great to be able to download and watch some decent quality races. You can`t always catch it live on TV and, in some cases, like WSBK, it isn`t even on my TV (although it is free on the web already).
pacwest
I'll pay $5 to be able to download it (an F1 race) in 1080p.

I have to PVR most races as it is due to being in the PST time zone so I rarely see them live.
pingu666
id consider it, if the price was low enough, if you look at steam, recently they have been puting a couple of games a week at *really* cheap prices, like £1 to £3.99, if you price it low then alot more people will purchase it smile.gif

for stuff like endurance events, then it would be cool, and the ability to download aswell
