Well I for one was quite glad Hammy didn't win, there's too much hype about him already, the last thing he needs (for me) is more fame and media coverage. Hoy and the others get far more benefit from winning an award like that, the recognition means much more and the extra earning power will make a difference. Well done to them. I'm quite happy to enjoy Lewis as a star within F1.

Absolutely, and I'm a McLaren (and therefore Lewis) fan.
Oh no, shot a big hole in the usual trolling bible once again. That thing's got to be hanging together by a thread by now ...

What a whinny arguement.

Chris Hoy deserved the award, it was simply an awesome achievement after 4 YEARS of preparation. He'll probably never have another chance to win it - that's why I voted for Hoy. Hamilton, on the other hand, will probably end up winning it two or three times if his career maintains its level, he simply gets more bites at the cherry because of the sport he is in.

The really funny thing is that your the only one complaining(Trolling). I doubt there is a single LH fan here who doesnt think that the right person won.

I'm a Hamilton fan, but not a huge one.

The right man definitely won. Hamilton's achieved a huge amount in a tiny space of time but there's no comparison with Hoy. Top class achievement over so many years has to be rewarded. If you were going to award it on a non-national basis then the last F1 driver who would've deserved it would've been MS IMHO for the same kind of reasons as Hoy.

Your "opinion" manifests itself in sustained and continued aggravation against a particular F1 driver and his fans, with blind denial of facts, alongside obtuse and frankly bizarre 'conclusions' upon which you base this so-called "opinion".

Every thread I see your posts in usually contains some kind of snipe or outright abuse aimed, as previously mentioned, at Lewis or fans of his.

You don't like him. We get that.

Attempting to wrap up your childish behaviour in a thin veil of so-called 'debate' is an offense to all intelligent people on this board, a club to which you sadly don't belong to.

Interesting that you should refer to argumentum ad hominem which translates as 'argument against the man' when your M.O. on this bulletin board seems to be arguing against the mere existance of Lewis Hamilton. Maybe you need to take a look in the mirror before passing judgement against other posters.

And yep, I've taken several direct pops at you, because frankly you are the typical troll. Run around bulletin board getting people's backs up, then hide behind rules and 'it's just my opinion' when enough people start to get pissed.

And that's more than enough time wasted on you for one lifetime.

oh damn

1. If im quoted, and you respond, perhaps im not so dumb after all.

2. If youve read my comments carefully, youd see i usually refrain from commenting on Lewis and have only done that the last few days. Ive been critical on mosley, ecclestone, kimi, domenicalli, stewart, dc, ej, stoddart and yet you dont seem to have a problem with that.

3. It would be nice if you speak for yourself. There is no WE. If so, name man and horse.

4. See point 2.

5. If youre so intelligent, how come you need 'direct pops' at me, degrading yourself?

6. The only troll here seems to be you. Calling for ignore lists when someone tries to argue that Lewis gets 20 times more exposure than the other contestants.

And that's more than enough time wasted on you for one lifetime.

Yea yea, well im not like you. So much tough talk. Insecure? Come back anytime, mr lost prophet.

I think the problem for a lot of the British public when voting in these sorts of sports competitions, is that Lewis is a motor racing driver. A lot of the British public think that motor racing is not as worthy a sport as say, sprinting, because the driver is just steering a car in their view. They don't realise the levels of fitness, training, years of dedication etc. that it takes to be a top driver. As far as they see it, McLaren and Ferrari spend millions on a car that does all the work and the driver is secondary to that.

Motor sport drivers will always have that barrier to overcome.

Probably similar to the way that I think darts is not a sport ...

I think this topic is just being way too over analysed.

In an Olympic Year, the Olympic Games are far and away the most watched event on the planet. By a massive amount. More people watch the Olympic Games than watch 2 seasons of GP combined, for example. It is the planet's premier event.

In an Olympic Year there is an excellent chance that an Olympian will win the SPOTY - as history shows.

Hoy et all will not even be on the list next year as they won't be on peoples radars again. However, once every 4 years they get a massive spike in popularity, this is simpy a phenomenon of the games.

Clearly Hamilton would have won if it had not been an Olympic Year. Lewis is not disadvantaged for being a racing driver. Not even slightly. He did well to come 2nd, beating that swimmer lass, Murray, Calzage etc. It was a fantastic year for sport. Lewis just needs to win the WDC in a season when its not the Olympics and nothing bigger happens - like Murray winning Wimbledon!!!

"Lewis Hamilton? Let's make this clear: he's a great driver, able to get within a whisker of the title in his first year in F1 and winning it on his second. However, with all due respect, I wouldn't change him with Felipe Massa."

How about Kimi then, Luca?

Luca,
Lewis would have to have a desire to drive for Ferrari before you would need to worry about such things. Cart before the horse, maybe?

Oh he commented on that too:
"Usually it's Ferrari doing the choosing. I'm convinced that it's Ferrari making a driver popular. Kimi Raikkonen came to Ferrari and won the title. If Massa didn't win it this year it's our fault. It would have been normal for him to win it, but he didn't because of our errors."
But Max was distracted with other stuff this year and left the result fixing up to his rather rubbish second in command.

Isn't that what always happens when you let a boy do a man's job lol.gif
Orin
Eh? 2008 was probably fixiest year ever, so much so that even people like Heidfeld made comments about the poor stewarding and at the end of the season the FIA was forced to announce reforms. I think in all fairness we've got to put this one down to Ferrari incompetence, doing the conga during the Singapore GP for instance, yes it looked good and got them plenty of camera time, but it really spoiled Massa's race. Massa lost despite the FIA's 17 point bonus scheme, that's mostly down to his team.
Orin
BTW, while Hamilton won't be appearing in Croydon, he will be in Madame Tussauds:-

I am not an Englishman and I have no idea about the kind of coverage ITV or BBC gave to Lewis, but as a fan of both the Olympics and the F1, I think what Chris Hoy did at the Olympics was one in the life time kind-of-performance. He performed at the same level as Phelps and Bolt - simply outstanding and near perfection. He deserved sportsman of the year in the UK. It would not be too far-fetched to state that he is the European sportsman of the year for his exploit at the Beijing 2008.

F1 CHAMP Lewis Hamilton left a mother and her four-year-old daughter badly shaken and in tears after writing off their car in a smash.

The British race ace, 24, failed to spot an oncoming Peugeot 206, driven by a woman called Anouk, as he pulled out in front of her at a junction.

Lewis hit the brakes when he saw them, but was too late to stop them ploughing into his flash Mercedes, leaving their motor badly damaged.

Anouk, 39, said she and daughter Selene were traumatised by the crash.

She said: “My legs were like jelly and Lewis was very distressed — trembling and on the verge of tears.

Intersection

“He immediately asked if Selene was OK and apologised. He assumed total responsibility for the incident.

“I didn’t recognise him till the police came and said, ‘Do you know who this is? It’s Lewis Hamilton, the Formula 1 world champion’.”

Lewis, who was unhurt, comforted Anouk and signed autographs for cops at Vesenaz, a village near Geneva, Switzerland, where he lives.

He also wrote a note, saying: “I’m sorry. Best wishes, Lewis Hamilton” and later got a secretary to check Anouk was OK. The McLaren driver, in Shanghai yesterday for the Chinese Grand Prix, denied reports he had run a Stop sign at the intersection.

It is understood his insurers paid out almost immediately.

A source close to Lewis said: “He did not run a stop sign or anything. There was an awkward junction with mirrors to view oncoming traffic. He thought there was nothing coming, so he pulled out and then noticed the other car too late.

“Lewis has very much accepted responsibility.”

McLaren confirmed Lewis was involved in a “low-speed bump” last month. Geneva police said there would be no prosecution.

The Sun is the absolute lowest of the bottom-feeding, gutter journalism that the UK has to offer... It's owned by Rupert Murdoch, he also owns 'The News Of The World' who were responsible for breaking the spankgate story, just to give you some idea of the soaring journalistic highs that the group achieves ;)

The Sun is not quite as trashy as the News of the World, but if you think that headline's out of order you should know that The Sun is also responsible for the worst headline in the history of motor sport - after Jos Verstappen's Benetton pit fire at Hockenheim in 1994:

THE IGNITED COLORS OF BENETTON...

To put Lewis Hamilton's accident in perspective, here's a Bird's eye view of the scene from maps.live.com - search for "chemin de la messin, vesenaz, switzerland".

Blind junction - you can't even see the junction for the trees - X marks the spot where Lewis pulled out from.

Folk need to get off Lewis' case for a while - just proves even the WDC makes mistakes - everybody's human.

(I work as a driving instructor btw - I'll be telling pupils after this, if Lewis Hamilton can make a mistake, so can you - so BE CAREFUL! ambivalent.gif)
