I supposed this must be the situation because of the huge Automotive investments, now we have some numbers. It's not surprise, these are hard times for McLaren, it's like 'throes of childbirth'.

But the F1 section is making money, and for this reason they have signed another champion, who's marketable. Regardless of the result, the racing team will be moneymaker this year too.

I was just watching Adelaide 1985 - some driving by Ayrton Senna in his pre-McLaren years that shows enormous similarities with Lews Hamilton:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IVzJHZBOSS8...feature=related

The race is there in 12 parts, and each part is worthwhile watching, this part just shows in very dramatic fashion how much and how successfully the early Lewis does emulate his idol Senna.

I am curious how the McLaren preparations in winter are going - Button is more the Prost style of driver, Hamilton the Senna style of driver, so Button should be spending the winter in the factory while Hamilton should be on holidays till the test sessions start...

Inevitably, Lewis has not showed up at Croydon so far as well....

I have a question about the livery for the MP4-25. I heard they're still running the Silver and Red combination, but will McLaren still have the Mercedes logos on the car this year? I'm asking because I'm in the process of making a skin for rFactor.

The Merc branding still appears on the team clothing (see pics of Button with 2010 team top) so there will probably still be Mercedes branding of some sort on the car.

Merc logos must be there, I'm sure. Also the official name (VMM) will keep the Mercedes name. To advertise Mercedes is part of the process to pay to Daimler to get back its 40%. I guess this way it's cheaper to get it. lol.gif

Very funny lol.gif

So maybe Senna wasn't quite as Hamiltonesque as we like to remember him wink.gif .

Jense- and sundry FA-fans may be hoping that Lewis can't make his tyres last like Ayrton in his 2nd year, but in fact LH won the wdc in his 2nd year. Meanwhile the MP4-25 will be perfect on its tyres, in Lewis' hands at least, if 2009 is anything to go by.

Definitely one of the more subtle bashes though wave.gif tongue.gif .

I don't really know the answer to that one, though I'd assume not. Perhaps you could design the skin without the logo, then add it if it has it at the launch.

Won't it be better to make the skins once the liveries are released? smile.gif

If I was redesigning their livery I would tweak the top of the nosecone to all-dayglo red to emphasis vodafone a little more (chrome around the sides of the nose etc).

I hope the designers have spiced up the theme, even if the main colour scheme remains. To have completely the same livery would be boring a bit, though the new forms of the new car will make it more interesting.

Apparantly, Lewis will get a new engineering team, so Phil Prew won't be on the radio to Lewis. So his team will be on equal footing to Jenson.

McLaren has undertaken a reshuffle of its race engineering crews in a bid to help get the best out of both Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button this year.

"I'm not going to say he (Hamilton) starts with a big advantage,"

I hope it will not be a disadvantage for Hamilton

i personally thought if jenson had a experience hand like Mark Slade with 15 years experience in F1 race engineer, he would be stronger.
With a new race engineer they are unproven when the pressure is on. Jensons biggest strength i thought at Brawn was his relationship with shovlin
who they used to socialise out of f1 aswell. not sure what the 2 new guys are like??? anyone?

Lets see how it plans out. I doubt lewis is bothered as he probably got the heads up longgggggggggg time ago.

This is a positive IMHO. 1) On the odd occasion that we heard LH's interaction with Prew last year it did not sound like Prew thought too much of LH's input. On most of those few occasions it would have been better if they gave more weight to LH's input. The unfortunate events in Aus spring to mind. 2) the reasons given publicly for the shakeup sound pretty sound to me.

Best of luck JB...

It's not Phrew who speaks to Lewis on the radio, although he's his race engineer. The voice normally heard is from Richard Hopkirk.

On the other car it was always Mark Slade the race engineer, but the radio speaker was Steve Hallam, but then he quit to NASCAR so I don't know who spoke to Heikki this last season.

Little bit of blue sky's thinking/question from a "novice" - what exactly does a race engineer do? Is the job at Macca any different from elsewhere, given the reliance on banks of strategists and computerised simulations??

I counted 2 times where they said "lewis please concentrate on the driving and we will concentrate on the strategy thanks you." roflmao.gif
and 2 times "Lewis that strategy will not work for us, keep pushing please we need gap of XXX" [after lewis asks what strategy to get in front of x"

At least Jenson can read a race really well, as we saw his ability to know who he is racing against around him -the switch of strategy in spain an example after he lost the lead to rubens, and other times when he was coming back from poor grid positions and he was calculating who he needs to beat

All I have to say is Lewis asked for a 1 Stopper at Monza and was told "Lewis that strategy will not work for us," so I think Lewis is a lot more savvy then you think. So enough with the cheapshots.

I remember up.gif .

Funny how these senior superstar engineers are less confident than 24-year-old Lewis lol.gif

Good illustration of Lewis' influence in the team. When he talks about going round urging everyone on he's not kidding. The ~25 will have some of his influence in it, I feel sure. At a guess I'd say the setup window will be centred around Lewis, and accommodate Jenson at one end.
TheF1PERSON
Just a conspiracy theory, but it seems like McLaren are naming their cars with the same number as Lewis' age eek.gif

Could this be another reason to slant towards Lewis?

Note: I am perfectly aware of the real reason.

If Jenson struggles in the car that will put entirely on his shoulders and not the car. McLaren was centered around Prost and so was the car in 1988 but Senna still was much quicker than him in it.

Absolutely, Jense'll be in the simulator now and the team will be looking hard at his inputs and what that means in terms of the car they give him. I reckon he'll get better setups than he had at Brawn. Lewis clearly has been in there though, as ever, making himself the central figure, so if the fundamental design has a sweet spot it'll be where Lewis wanted it. But that's part of the competition, Jense could have had that by staying at Merc, and probably it's a very small difference.
