Button doesn't seem to have the one lap pace but did you see the metronomic consistency he displayed today? He did 4 laps (only four that they displayed) in the 1:15.9
Also:
http://www.fia.com/EN-GB/MEDIACENTRE/F1_ME..._race_chart.pdfHe led all but one lap. Mental.

Seems to do OK with one lap pace when it really matters, like going for pole.
Fastest laps during the race mean absolutely nothing, nada, zilch.

Button only pulls out fastest laps when needed, other than that, he controls the car and tyres well, all the time, being faster than anyone else.

Button's style has always been smooth, so he's unlikely to banzai fastest laps randomly during a race.

Button was like clockwork today.
Massa drove his socks off, but missed the podium with his poor qualifying. Can he 4peat at Turkey?
jensons race pace consistenancy is mind boggling i must admit, very consistent.

I am not sure what we are supposed to conclude from these figures. Possibly that the Brawn isn't that fast compared to the competition after all, but Button is driving consistently at it's limit when his rivals aren't?

This tells pretty much the speed of the car relative to competitors when winning. This year is closer than ever in terms of lapt times, so Button will not get them easy despite enjoying an performance advantage. The fastest lap variation is greater than the performance variation of the car.

Or that the Brawn is so good Jenson's often out in front with no need to push the car to the limit.

If the car is that good, could he not be setting fastest laps
without pushing the car to it's limits?

That makes no sense, in order to show that he would have to be posting constant fastest laps surely?

Winning at the slowest pace.
I'm not convinced with that, I think it's just that with the need to use engines for 3 or 4 races nowadays they relax when they have a lead and dont keep pushing. Prost used to have a reputation for winning at the slowest pace but he still got a significant number of fastest laps in the process.
Button had never got a fastest lap until this season. He only has 1 in 9 1/2 years yet surely he's been pushing to try and get podiums over the years?

I guess it was Jackie Stewart who told that you have to drive as slow as possible to win. Yesterday Jenson simply had no reason to hurry. This year engine and gearbox regulations also tend to support cautious approach. I think Jenson would not use the same engine on three rounds if he had to push like a hell in Bahrain and Spain.
And what's the point to go for a fastest lap? To get approval in Autosport forum?

You're right there is no point in going for fastest lap, other than so you can say you got the fastest lap. It isnt rewarded. Schumacher used to like getting fastest laps though, I guess it's another little challenge.

True, Button used one engine to win 3 straight race. Button is perfect for this era, in F1 or in sport its hard to analyse the best of best. Champions are good for their era.
