WELCOME TO THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICA
I have been inspired by Andy's wealth of information about Montreal welcoming visitors for the Canadian Grand Prix to make an attempt of sort for my home town of Indianapolis for the United States Grand Prix. I know there are other Indianapolis area Atlasers but I seem to be the most vocal so until someone else steps up to the plate you'll have to put up with me. The Official-Unofficial Atlas HQ will be at The Rathskeller. Its located downtown near the Murat Theater which is an easy landmark to spot from a distance since it kinda looks like a mosque. You may check this site if you need a map and directions. You may also call The Rathskeller at 317-636-0396 for directions from your hotel as well. There will be live music on all days in the biergarten. You may check the Rathskeller link for details. Unfortunately I cannot put up a banner to pinpoint our table but keep your eyes peeled for an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper anyway. ************************************** Last updated 7:00pm June 7, 2004 ************************************** Let me first make a note about local time. We are officially on Eastern Standard Time, but we do not observe Daylight Savings Time. Indiana and Arizona are the only two states in our Union of 50 that does this. To simplify things just remember we are on the same time as Chicago, which is in the Central Time Zone (GMT -6). This will be true from now until October. All times I post here for events will be local time. ************************************** USGP EVENTS For the official event web site please visit www.usgpindy.com I am very happy to see that we will finally have an open wheel support race. Here is the complete weekend schedule.... THURSDAY, June 17 8 a.m.-noon - Public pit walkabout I have called the IMS main office and they are going to be better prepared for all the fans coming for the Thursday pit walkabout. Enter the grounds at the 30th Street gate north of the track. The Yellowshirts will likely direct you to parking in the infield. FRIDAY, June 18 9-10 a.m. - Formula BMW USA practice 11 a.m.-noon - Formula One practice 2-3 p.m. - Formula One practice 3:30-4 p.m. - Porsche Michelin Supercup practice 4:30-4:55 p.m. - Formula BMW USA practice SATURDAY, June 19 8-8:45 a.m. - Formula One practice 9:15-10 a.m. - Formula One practice 10:25-11:10 a.m. - Porsche Michelin Supercup qualifying Noon-12:50 p.m. - Formula One pre-qualifying 1-2 p.m. - Formula One qualifying 2:30-3 p.m. - Formula BMW USA race #1 3:30-4:10 p.m. - Porsche Michelin Supercup race #1 (16 laps) SUNDAY, June 20 9:40-10:20 a.m. - Porsche Michelin Supercup race #2 (16 laps) 10:45- 11:15 a.m. - Formula One grid presentation 11:46 a.m. - National anthem Noon - United States Grand Prix (73 laps) 2:15-2:45 p.m. - Formula BMW USA race #2 ************************************************************ LOCAL NEWS AND WEATHER There are two local stations I usually watch for the weather. They're pretty good for their short range forcasts. Fox59 Skytrack13 The Indianapolis Star is the only newspaper in town. They'll give you as much print of the USGP as Bernie will allow. ************************************************************ LOCAL ATTRACTIONS We may not be as cosmopolitan as Montreal but we are not without cultural diversions. Speedway Hall of Fame Museum is definately a must see for any race fan. Although the collection is predominately cars that ran in the 500 over the years there is also a decent collection of grand prix cars including Lotus, Alpha Romeo, Cooper, and of course Ferrari. Conner Prairie is a living history villaige set in the frontier days of Indiana, the year is 1832 and Andrew Jackson is our president. Its a short drive northeast of Indianapolis right off Allisonville Road. The Eiteljorg is a really neat museum of Western Art. At present the special temporary exhibition is Jewish Life in the American West. Its located downtown on the corner of Washington Street. The Indiana State Museum is right next door and has an IMAX theater and exhibits that covers the arc of Indiana history from its geological formation to the present day and includes an exhibit celebrating Indiana's favorite sons and daughers (celebreties) from Hoagie Carmichael to David Letterman. You could spend the better part of a day with the kids at the Indianapolis Children's Museum located at the corner of 30th Street and Meridian. Also, we honor our veterans. Our War Memorials are also worth seeing. On the Canal at Military Park near the Eiteljorg and State Museum is the Medal of Honor Memorial, Monument Circle is the largest monument dedicated to the American Civil War in the world (and has if I do say so a first rate museum in the basement). We also have monuments dedicated to veterans of Vietnam, Korea in addition to the World Wars including a monumnent to the USS Indianapolis which was sunk by a Japanese submarine after delivering the atomic bombs. Indy Jazz Fest. See Robhood's comments below Do you want to go out for dinner and a movie? You can do both at Hollywood Bar and Filmworks. It is also the only theater in town that serves alcahol and permits smoking. You'll need to call ahead for reservations at 317-231-9250 That's just a few of my favorite local attractions...there is more of course. This is the official Indianapolis Torism Site ******************************************* Here's some of my favorite restaurants..... Union Jack at Speedway Located at 25th St and High School Road near the Crawfordsville exit off I-465 This place is crowded as hell during race weekends but is neat to go to. There is race memorbilia galore including artwork, helmets, gas cans, wings, you name it and the food is pretty good too. They are best known for their pizza and HUGE beer selection. Bazbaux Pizza With two locations at Broad Ripple and also Downtown they make some really good gourmet pizza. The Rathskeller Probably the best German restaurant in the city. Its not far from downtown in the northeast quadrant of Center township. Their Black Forest cheesecake is awesome. The Palomino Located downtown is a really good upscale casual restaurant. Their Steak Frites is probably my favorite there. La Bamba Located in Broadripple they are famous for the "Burrito as big of your Head". If you really like the hot stuff...ask for your burrito con diablo. Its in the middle of most of the bars in Broadripple and is open late for the drunks there. Excellent burritos I might add. Bravo! Located in Castleton just north of the Castleton Square Mall. They are an excellent Italian restaurant and one of my favorite dishes there is the Chicken Marsala. Their Creame Brule is their best dessert IMO. Bucca di Beppo Another excellent Italian restaurant with two locations, one in Castleton and the other downtown. The food is great but I must warn you the portions are huge. Its a family restaurant and each "entre" can easily feed two people because they want you to share it with everyone at the table. St Elmo's How could I have forgot this one? Located downtown near the RCA Dome, this is Indy's oldest steakhouse and also one of the best. Although I have never been there I have heard they make the best shrimp cocktail in the city. Acaplulco Joe's While I'm on the subject of oldest restaurants...Acapulco Joe's is Indianapolis' oldest Mexican restaurant. They are on the corner of Capitol and Vermont (a couple blocks north of the state capitol building). They feature fast service and good food at a resonable price. Shapiro's Delicatesin This Jewish deli has two locations, downtown and Carmel. They make the best Reuben Sandwich in the city. Its a bit expensive for deli/cafeteria food but the quality is excellent and they bake their own bread which also helps their sandwiches IMO. Smokey Bones BBQ One of my favorite BBQ joints. Two locations, Greenwood and Castleton. |

I could wait forever and nobody would step up for Indianapolis and something like this would be useful for visitors. I'm going to add more information tonight. Andy does a first rate job on his Montreal info thread I hope I can do at least half as well has him. I'm glad to help out in any way that I can. I'll also be happy to answer any questions by PM or email too. |

May I also respectfully point out that there is a Jazz festival happening all weekend. AND, totally O.T., that Canada Fossils, for whom my son-in-law works, supplied some of the dinosaurs for the excellent Children's Museum. Way to go Cory, I knew that Fine Arts degree would pay off!

Having attended every Grand Prix at Indy, including the inaugural event, my wife and I never had a chance to see much of the city since we always stayed overnight with our friends in Cincinnati. To be honest, after the first three years I was left with a very unfavorable impression of the city. However, last year we finally decided that the 4 hour round trip commute was too much 2-3 days in a row and spent a few days in Indianapolis over the race weekend. I have a customer up in Noblesville who put us up in a place near the Fashion Mall, around where the 465 and the 431 meet. It was a bit of a distance from the track but we spent some time up and down Broad-Ripple, went to Union Jack's and generally got to know the city a bit. What a difference. Let's face it, depending on how you drive in, some of the area around the Speedway is a borderline slum. But after exploring the town we now have a very different and favorable impression of the city. This year we're staying in Indianapolis again. |

Don't forget about Average Joe's in Broad Ripple. Jon Pollak and I helped organize a get together there USGP weekend a couple of years ago. We saw a number of open wheel drivers there along with the occasional former Indy 500 champion. Jon Pollak has got some picture around here someplace!

I honestly do not know why we don't have one of these threads for EACH GP as I am sure there is at least one person on this BB from just about every city/area where a GP is held. Especially England, Australia, Brazil, Japan, etc... Oh well, maybe in the future! Have fun, everyone going to the USGP! Hopefully one day my son and I can make it there! |

An excellent thread with great info
A good idea for some out of state visitors, if you have accomodation near the circuit is to hire bicycles rather than attempting race day traffic. Try http://bgindy.com/site/intro.cfm for more info I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Classy Chassis yet. Recommended by at least one Unser. |

Maybe this is the place to have the Atlas HQ. I was thinking of finding someplace closer to the center of town but the Kellerbar and Biergarten would be great hangouts. What do you guys think? The food is a tad expensive I must warn you though. If people want to make this the Atlas HQ let me know and I'll go down there over the weekend and have a chat with the management and see what kind of arrangements we can make. Also another possible down side is minors (<21 years) may not be permitted in the bar or biergarten. Let me know if that's a problem as well. |

I am going to be there for the third time this year. Was there in 2000 and 2002. I dont seem to remember the traffic being that bad even in 2000 when it was a new gig for Indy. Has something changed should I be prepared to wait in traffic.
I also purchased a parking pass for lot 2 this year. Will I have very many problems with this?? Usually just parked in some guys yard. Thanks for the info |

Good job on this thread IndyCar. Unfortunately we can't make it to Indy this year but we will definitely be there next year. P.S. If anyone plans to go to Union Jacks for dinner, have the prime rib, it was awesome in 2002!

If you're just there for race day, some guys yard is the way to go. The streets around the track will become one-way for post-race exit. If you're familar with the set up, know the specific direction you wish to leave, put the car in one of those yards where the street will be an exit. OTOH You can get screwed if given bad info and find ugly gridlock. We spent 3 days there last year with an RV (Parking Lot 2) and for the first time had a terrible time leaving (thanks to the well-meaning parking lot guy who got it backwards). |

Going for 5 in a row.
Does anyone know anything about the events happening at Monument Circle? This site says there will be some kind of historic car meet: http://www.indyconcours.com/. I've also read that there will be Ferraris on Friday night and Jags on Saturday night gathering there. Is there a restaurant/bar strip near Monument Circle? Parking? Thanks. Jim |

goalposthead:
IIRC there was a historic Jaguar show at the circle a couple years ago. The Kan Man probably has pictures of it. Yes, there is plenty of bars & restaurants nearby. Bucca di Beppo, Qdoba, Champs, Alcatraz Brewing Co., Palomino, Hard Rock Cafe just to name a few are all within a couple blocks of the Monument. There should be plenty of parking available as well. The meter maids don't work after 6pm on friday so after that its free parking on the street for the weekend. There is also parking available in the Circle Centre mall garage at fairly cheap rates. |

Yes, there are two others nearby. The RAM brewery is probably my favorite and the other one is the closest to the Monument but the name escapes me right now. In other news....I think I'm setteling on The Rathskeller for the site of Atlas HQ. Since I suspect several folks may be wanting to go to the Speed party at Hooters we may have our main gathering there friday night. I'll know for sure after I speak with the manager of the Rathskeller tomorrow after work. |

Here is my little Indy parking secret for those with a car who want to get out fast after the race and to park for free. At the main entrance (the Southwest corner) which is turn 1 of the oval, the corner of 16th and Georgetown, there is a railroad track to the Southwest and a street (15th Street) that crosses over to the little one street town of Speedway. If you get there early in the morning, you can park all along the residential streets of 14th, 13th 12th etc to the West. Or you can pay to park in somebody's driveway if you want to be only a block or two away from the entrance. It is only a 3 to 5 block walk though to the main entrance if you park along the street. Closer than parking in the Coke lot and not a bad hike at all.
This was always true even with the far larger crowds of the Indy 500 in its heyday, so it should still be true now. You can always find a free spot if you get there by 7 AM, or even later though a couple blocks further West. Besides that benifit though is the big one. Getting out after the race. It is very easy to just drive away with no traffic jam. The cops are at every corner. They turn you South and you go a few blocks down to 10th Street. That street then zooms right along and you can get right over to 465 and head south to the Airport, or North toward Chicago, or East toward downtown Indianapolis. You don't get caught up in the traffic from the track on 16th, Georgetown, ot the street to the North. You can get right out and park for free too. |

Park in a yard ($20) on the street north of the track, and just to the east, after the race it's one way traffic east with cops for several blocks, dumps you into a ghetto for a few blocks, and then I-55 South to I-70 east. It's what we've always done for the GP, no problems getting out if you walk fast to beat the traffic getting out of the "North 40" lot.

There are also several acres of new parking on the south side of the track, south of 16th street, where TG has purchased and razed an old hotel and a clay factory.
People who find parking on the west and northwest areas outside the track (20th - 25th street, as well as the "Coke Lot") will also find new footbridges over several streams built by IMS which will make some of those parking areas a better experience with easier access. |
